2014 Domaine Arlaud Clos St. Denis

Clos St. Denis Grand Cru Pinot Noir more

2014 Burgundy 10years on, tasted blind: Nose of cedar, sour cherry and dried flowers. Quite attractive, but on the palate it is a bit austere, with bright acidity and a slightly drying finish. The tannin quality is not as good as the Clos de Lambrays in the next glass. Group Rank: 9/16

Two bottles open, one very reductive whereas the other one very representative of the climat and style of the domaine: dark ruby with some garnet reflections, the nose is full of ripe fruits (especially cherry). Mouth very extracted and concentrated with lot of spices but not without freshness. Quite short persistence.

Initially hesitant to open given it's still relatively young for the appellation, but glad I did. Dark purple, maroon. Intense nose of red fruits on opening, strawberries, rose petals. This evolved to a more reductive nose, mineral character as time went on. Palate was on the whole balanced with adequate amounts of acidity, not overpowering, with substance to it. Tannins were very subtle, almost imperceptible. This wine does however does remind me of excellent syrahs in Rhone, perhaps the vintage was a hotter one? I think this will improve in the future, but certainly very much enjoyable now!

Full body. Quite extracted. Fruity but one dimensional. Disjointed on mid palate and hugely tannic into the finish. Needs more time.

Deep ruby color with excellent spice aromas. First glass 15 min after open. Balanced and lovely with a long finish. Clearly Grand Cru quality but needed to open up in the glass - Zalto Burgundy. Long finish and continued to improve in the glass until it was gone much too soon. Quite the treat with our salmon dish.

What a bummer. This is a Grand Cru?! No way. The bottle looked to be in perfect shape, intact cork soaked about half way up. A tiny hint of browning right at the rim, but otherwise the wine looks fine. This is 25 yrs old after old.

Not fragrant at all- some red fruits, a bit of leather, you really have to go hunting around for aromas. Good acid in the mouth, some powdery tannins, red cherries, other nondescript red fruits, leather. Finish is decently long. Started to decline after a few hours open.

I really think this was a sound bottle. It wasn't cooked, oxed, corked, anything like that. But jeez, for what this wine should be, the complexity, concentration, and just plain impact is sorely lacking. And it's EXPENSIVE. Somewhat pleasant at best. If you told me this was a Bourgogne rouge from a middling producer I'd believe you. Not worth it at all.

10th of 12, pnp, perfect level, cork quarter stained, back on top form, marvellous black cherry, some liqueur, hint of black raspberry, very mineral as befits CdlR, complex, GC authority, some upside surprisingly, 12+ years. F+ (18).

This is a very dense and dark fruited wine. While it has elegance and a decently silky texture, and not as ripe as some '20 red Burgs I've had, it just feels a little too brooding and big for my preference.

Consumed over three nights, this is my second bottle, the first was four years ago. At age 7, I don’t find the wine particularly interesting or compelling. It is a food-friendly wine with plenty of acid and tannin structure, and at only 12.5% it is also lunch-friendly. But it is a bit too lean and harsh, particularly on the finish. Surprisingly, it hardly changed over three nights, so this, its structure, and the winemaker’s reputation gives me a glimmer of hope that it will evolve and improve.

Similar to my last note, this needs just a bit of air in the glass but drinks very well right now with dark fruits, some of the 2013 green but in a good way, minerals, and more density than most 2013s, making me believe it will hold for a bit. A-

Was craving a Burg, and after reading the last few reviews, figured I’d give it a shot.

Decanted for 2 hours.

Dark purple colour, nose of black fruits. Can’t perceive much more, this has lots of baby fat. Full mouthful, lenght ++.

I’d say if your more on the traditional Burg side, let this sleep for a few more years before popping.

Lovely color. The nose shows a bit of reduction; coupled with fresh red fruits, flowers, minerals and a hint of underbrush. This is barely medium bodied on the palate with good concentration and real class. The medium length finish features silky tannins.

Medium garnet. Slightly transparent.

Reduction, subtle oak, bay leaf, and spices. Note of forest floor emerging.
A nice mix of red and black currant that has satisfying depth and weight. Very good acidity that guides the palate. Rich midpalate of mocha chocolate. Soft supple tannin and mineral texture. Lingering finish with orange peel and rose potpourri.

This is a superbly elegant 'Les Ruchots.' While everyone is rather eager to write off 2021, this is a bright spot. Hats off to Cyprien.

Pale to medium garnet. Slightly transparent.

A touch of reduction. Subtle oak. Notes of bay leaf, eucalyptus, rose petals. Red fruit of cherry and currant that has surprising weight. Midpalate of bitter chocolate. Spicy and floral finish.

The texture is very light and suave with strong salinity.

While being relatively light bodied. this is still a very elegant 'Aux Chesasux.'

Pale to medium garnet. Slightly transparent.

Some reduction. A hint of forest floor and mushrooms. Some oak and graphite. Violet and lavender. Red fruit of cherry and raspberry. Succulent texture with soft tannin. Floral finish with orange peel note.

Lighter bodied and more red-fruited than other vintages. Still it is very charming.

Perfumed sweet nose with raspberry and red fruits. Very charming and inviting nose. Palate is fresh with very fine tannins and still firm fruit core. I really enjoyed the seamless structure and complexity of this wine - especially mid palate. Finishes a bit abruptly for 1er cru.
