8/12/2013 - The Drunken Cyclist Likes this wine: 87 pointsRetail $35. 2003 was an extremely hot year across France, causing winemakers all kinds of difficulty, particularly in Burgundy. This wine was made more in the “new world” style of big fruit up front with not as much acidity holding it all together. An enjoyable quaff, but in no way is it a “typical” Burgundy. Very Good. 86-88 Points. |

3/6/2012 - The Drunken Cyclist Likes this wine: 88 pointsThis was our first dinner without the family matriarch, and quite predictably, the younger son (3.5 year old) requested fish tacos when given the chance to decide what to have for dinner (he asks if we can have fish tacos every night regardless of the situation). I went downstairs, expecting to find three bottles of this Meursault, but of course there were only two (I really need to do a full inventory of the ‘cellar’–the problem is I only ever ‘discover’ that I am missing several bottles [I never ‘find’ extras] which means that not only am I a drunk, but also terribly disorganized). After a brief stint in the freezer, I popped and poured. Color starting to get a bit dark but no other signs of oxidation. Bright Meursault nose, some lemon peel and vanilla. On the palate, tart and bright–acidity, well balanced with a hint of the lemon coming through the minerality. Very nice, but clearly getting a bit old. |

However, 1+ hours later, it no longer smelled corked. It didn't smell great, it seemed to be a rather tired elderly burg, but it was at least drinkable and not flawed. I believe there are certain volatile compounds that are similar to cork smell but not the same, and they sometimes will blow off the wine, like the funk of an old Bordeaux or CDP will sometimes do. Unfortunatley, when we smell a wine like this, we usually dump it and move along. |

Seemed corky and very weird on the nose and palate,. Kept checking on it over an hour, and it didn't seem much better - there was no interest in drinking it. Long after that, one of us still had some and it seemed to be ok at that point. I also recall the first bottle took a bit to open up, but I don't recall thinking it was off. It you happen across one if these, it might be worthwhile to decant if there is any indication that the wine is not correct - maybe it will work itself out. |

This starts off with an almost smoky char on the nose, giving way to black cherry and grilled berries with pain grille and after a bit some funky earth and vanillin too. The palate offers the same darker berry and cherry fruits, earth, satiny tannins with some grip, and dried spices. Fun. 91+pts. |

Tremendous quality for a village wine. Structure, generosity, length and some complexity, Delicious now, but will hold for a few more years. |

3/17/2014 - The Drunken Cyclist wrote: 87 pointsMaybe I waited too long. Maybe it was bottle variation. Maybe it was not the right day on the Biodynamic calendar. Whatever it was, this wine did not show the same character as the previous bottles had. It was fine. It was even enjoyable, I guess. But it lacked the depth, even the soul, that I had hoped for based on its brethren that had gone before. Very Good. thedrunkencyclist.com |

1/27/2014 - The Drunken Cyclist Likes this wine: 90 pointsI thought I was so sly. I thought I was so cool. I thought I was so stealth. We took this to our local restaurant that used to be a BYOB. We have been there so often, though, that even after they got their liquor license, we were still allowed to bring our own wine. Nonetheless, I tried to be nonchalant in opening the bottle. After 10 minutes of trying to get the cork out, I gave up an pushed the rest of the cork in the bottle (and left a huge mess all over the floor and table). Oh yeah, the wine? Still fabulous (after we got it home and were able to run the wine through a strainer). I am such a dope. thedrunkencyclist.com |

3/9/2012 - calnative Likes this wine: NRI had no intention of saving this but recently found it. Surprise! very drinkable with great acidity, some richness with lemon peel, beeswax and good minerality with extract in the finish. Lighter and livelier than a full-on 1er with some green-ness and less fruit but enjoyable. |

3/6/2012 - The Drunken Cyclist wrote: 88 pointsCertainly getting to be a little long in the tooth, but this bottle showed better than the previous two (as I remember--but I also thought I had three of them left, not just two, so clearly I have issues). Nice acidity in the form of some lemon peel and a hint of vanilla. A bit disjointed in the mid-palate, but it tries to resolve itself by the medium finish. Very good. |

9/24/2011 - Andrewbdc wrote: 90 pointsMedium to light yellow, definitely becoming a bit watery on the rim. O the nose, vanilla, butter, toasted almonds, acacia. On the palette, quite mineral, very fine Meursault, medium body and finish. Definititely closer to a classic Meursault than indicated in my previous tasting note. |

8/30/2011 - Rob and Meg wrote: 85 pointsThe nose shows elements of honeyed pear/apple and caramelized lemon peel, as well as an interesting undertone of dried cherry. The oak is slightly present but well integrated within the aromatics. The palate comes across as somewhat dilute initial, with tones of orchard fruit, honeydew melon, and cucumber. The mid-palate gains momentum with focused lemon/lime zest that continue onto a persistent finish of arising fresh mushrooms, woodiness, and a mild alcohol spike. The wine has average structure, but is salvaged somewhat by good mid-palate weight. This is a nice chardonnay, but suffers from slightly out of balance structure and flavor. R&M 85 |
