2004 Quinta Vale D. Maria Douro C.V. ("Curriculum Vitae")Red Blend more |
4/12/2024 - cofidis2 Likes this wine: 91 pointsJust showing some bricking but otherwise still retaining good color. Surprisingly still quite tannin for an almost 20 yr old wine. Becoming more claret like, with pencil lead, baked cherries, and leather. A bit of heat on the finish, not surprising given the 15% ABV, but carries it very well. Overall, this has matured into a nice Douro red. 91/100 |

2007 Quinta da Romaneira Porto VintagePort Blend more |
3/30/2024 - cofidis2 Likes this wine: 89 points2007 Qta d Romaneira VP. Color is a light ruby red. Red currant, pine resin, protruding spirit, and anise. Light to moderate complexity with a spirity finish. A more delicate VP that appears to be maturing at a faster than anticipated rate. Not sure if in an awkward stage or not. Will have to revisit in due course. Right now, 89/100 |

2009 Warre Porto Late Bottled VintagePort Blend more |
3/22/2024 - cofidis2 Likes this wine: 90 pointsDecanted about 8 hours. The color is still holding a dark ruby and now showing some light bricking on the edges. Youthful plums are starting to give way to blueberries, mixed with a lot of dusty tannins and plenty of acidity. The moderate complexity, with the just evolving fruit and structure, make this an especially easy to drink LBV. I Really enjoyed this bottle, even though it is not near peak yet. These Warre's LBV have the ability to age beyond most in their category. Enjoy now with a long decant, or better yet, wait another decade for this to start peaking. |

1985 Quinta do Crasto Porto VintagePort Blend more |
2/11/2024 - cofidis2 wrote: 88 pointsInitially decanted about 4 hours, with a couple glasses leftover for the next day. Lighter in color with bricking. Very viscous and sweet with bing cherries and licorice. The tannins are fully resolved. A medium slightly warm finish is short on acidity to temper that sweetness. A rather delicate VP at this point in its evolution and one that is at its peak drinking window, if not a touch past. |

NV Quinta Santa Eufêmia 30 years Old White PortPorto White Blend more |
2/2/2024 - cofidis2 Likes this wine: 94 pointsBottled 2017. Bought June 2017 at the Quinta. Viscous apricots are balanced by marked acidity on the palate. That sweetness turns into a dusty old wood dryness as it transitions to a very long finish. A remarkable mix of two different profiles wrapped into one. This is now throwing some light sediment, but is holding up well in bottle. 94 points. |

2016 Niepoort PoeirinhoBairrada Baga more |
2/2/2024 - cofidis2 Likes this wine: 92 points2016, 100% Baga grape from their Quinta de Baixo vineyards. 11.5% abv. Very delicate cherries with a tannic backbone. Shy at first, then opens up with air but still retains that restrained fruit profile. Best comparison would be old world Pinot Noir from long ago. Deceivingly long finish just dances around for ages. No experience with this wine previously, but would appear to need more time to really strut its stuff. 92+ points. |

1998 Quinta do Vesuvio Porto VintagePort Blend more |
9/10/2023 - cofidis2 Likes this wine: 89 pointsOn it's 25th birthday, decided to check in on this one. Still an abnormally dark ruby for a 1998 VP. Youthful dark fruits have not yet started their transition into secondary flavors. Some medium tannins still holding on. Could use a little more in the acidity and complexity departments, but still very enjoyable. A medium finish full of fresh berries and a touch of spirit. 1998 was a tough year and this is one of the better examples from it. There's no rush to drink these, as the fruit is still so young, it just lacks a bit in the complexity department. At 25 yrs old, I'll call this one a medium+ ager. Fun to drink now and perhaps over the next 10-15 yrs. But when that youthful fruit starts fading the complexity will most likely also drop off even more. At that point it will just depend on what profile you like your VP's to have. |

2015 Niepoort BlaBla BlaisDouro Red Blend more |
9/8/2023 - cofidis2 Likes this wine: 89 pointsHolding up well still. More an old school Douro wine with leather, pencil lead, drying cherries, plenty of uplifting acidity, drying tannins still popping up on the finish. Overall, a nice wine that’s probably reaching peak soon yet still drinking well. |

8/31/2023 - cofidis2 wrote: 88 points1995 Smith Woodhouse LBV. Got off early for the starting Labor Day weekend so decanted two hours ago when I got home. Blueberry nose. Very dark color still. Medium bodied. Allspice, licorice, menthol, and a little dose of typical soapiness when a Ruby transitions into older age. Mostly resolved tannins and moderate acidity. Medium length finish is a mix of drying plums, eucalyptus and leather. 88/100 |

7/16/2023 - cofidis2 wrote: 93 pointsI’ve had over a case of this wine now. It is a rock star that, for reasons unknown, isn’t more well known. It gets better the longer opened and is even better on day 2. Why this is only ~$26/retail I don’t know. What I do know is buy all you can find as one day this won’t be so inexpensive. Currently, it is one of the top QPR (quality to price ratio) coming out of Portugal. 93/100 |

1991 Croft Porto VintagePort Blend more |
6/18/2023 - cofidis2 Likes this wine: 93 points1991 Croft VP. Decanted ~7 hrs. Very dark color with just a bit of lightened bricking on the edges. Youthful plums still dominate the nose and palate. Moderate tannins give to a dash of anise and are balance by good acidity, which also is keeping the sweetness in check. A VP that is nowhere near peak yet and still has a long life ahead of it. During which time it will continue to develop and eventually take on secondary notes. Absolutely delicious, but over the next 10-20 more years it will only get better. 93+\100 |

1998 Fonseca Porto Guimaraens VintagePort Blend more |
6/4/2023 - cofidis2 Likes this wine: 88 pointsfrom 375ml bottle that I bought in 2006 for $22, per my records. Color is medium ruby and indicates in a period to consume. Has a nose reminiscent of some 1980's VP's, woody, licorice but not TCA. While the palate has still has some tannins, the fruit is fully matured and into its secondary phases now. Light complexity and ready to drink, at least from 1/2 bottle. |

1997 Gould Campbell Porto VintagePort Blend more |
5/19/2023 - cofidis2 wrote: 88 points1997 Gould Campbell VP. I can’t recall ever having this but quite possible I have at some point long ago. Bought at auction recently for cheap. Signs of slight past seepage when capsule removed, so take note with a grain of salt. Still quite dark color but also showing bricking. The fruit is in a transitory state now. The fresh berries are giving way to a more woody and licorice dominate palate. Tannins are mostly resolved, though a touch is still hanging in there. While the palate has morphed away from the fresh berry fruit, the finish still retains nice freshness. The short coming is the overall complexity, which is, well, lacking. 88/100 |

2017 Quinta do Vallado Porto Late Bottled VintagePort Blend more |
5/14/2023 - cofidis2 Likes this wine: 87 pointsVery perfumed nose. Initially quite spirity but 7 hrs later it integrated very nicely. Soft bodied plums and mocha with light tannins. While a bit harsh on opening, this has mellowed with decanting and is a pleasant quaffer. Driven cork with fine sediment, one to drink in the nearer term. 87/100 |

2016 Pedroncelli Vintage Port Four GrapesDry Creek Valley Port Blend more |
5/12/2023 - cofidis2 Likes this wine: 89 pointsColor is very dark. Nose has black fruits and a touch of vanilla from oak. Blackberries and plums are very pronounced. then a wave of dusty tannins take over briefly while the fruit fights back. There is a touch of vanilla bourbon that comes from the American oak barrels they use. Well integrated spirit, which is rare for domestic “ports.” With the exception of the slight American oak notes, this is a very enjoyable “LBV” at a excellent price. I would buy this again. 89/100 |

2016 Niepoort Douro RedomaRed Blend more |
2/20/2023 - cofidis2 wrote: 85 pointsLight, flabby, simple. I’ve had Redoma since the 1990’s, which I’ve loved. I’ve recommended it for ~15 years as a great QPR wine. However, this is easily the worst one I’ve had. It almost seems as though Niepoort has increased quantity at the expense of quality. If this was a $15 bottle I’d be ok with it. Need to open some younger vintages and see if this is a one off or a not so good trend. |

2003 Niepoort Porto Broadbent VintagePort Blend more |
1/19/2023 - cofidis2 Likes this wine: 90 pointsBottled by Niepoort. Original note was pop-n-pour, with an update 24 hrs later. Soft round red stone fruits. Lovely wisps of licorice and tobacco dance on the tongue. Tannins are more on the softer side at this point and has nice acidity keeping it lively and fresh. Medium complexity and finish. PnP, it's in a good spot to drink now and in the nearer term, say next 10 or so years. 89 Points. 24 hours later the tannins have become more pronounced and it's showing a slightly drier palate and finish than it did on opening. I wouldn't extend the drinking window assessment from 24 hours ago, but it has improved being opened and thus I will increase my score. |

1994 Quarles Harris Porto VintagePort Blend more |
1/1/2023 - cofidis2 Likes this wine: 92 points1994 Quarles Harris VP. Decanted about 9 hrs. Still a dark color but starting to show some light fading from its youth. While just starting to show some secondary characteristics, this is still mostly youthful plums and red stone fruit. A touch of licorice, slightly softening tannins and fabulous acidity. Maturing at a slightly faster rate than the top VP’s of this vintage, and a little less complexity, this is still youthful and full of upside potential. I loved the long lingering finish this possessed. |

1994 Ferreira Porto VintagePort Blend more |
12/31/2022 - cofidis2 Likes this wine: 96 points1994 Ferreira VP. Decanted 7 hours. Nose has a complex mix of passion fruit, green pepper, lavender and plums. Perhaps the most exotic nose for a ‘94 I’ve had. Still extremely youthful in the mouth. Where many of this vintage are now showing secondary characteristics, this is still tannic and full of primary black fruit with no obvious changes given its approaching 30 years of age. There is a slight touch of unintegrated spirit still, which should integrate nicely as this continues its glacially slow aging profile. A long fruit and tannic driven finish cap off a stunning Port. 96/100 |

2001 Fonseca Porto Vintage Quinta do PanascalPort Blend more |
11/26/2022 - cofidis2 wrote: 91 points2001 Fonseca Qta d Panascal VP is still very dark in color. Nose has moved to more secondary licorice notes. In the mouth is a mix of eucaplutus, licorice, black berry, moderate tannins and good acidity. While showing some secondary notes, this is still a long way from fully mature. The only slight detractor, which isn’t a surprise for an “off-vintage”, is it could use a little more complexity. None the less, a very good surprise. 91/100 |
