  • 2010 Château Canon

My last of these; I was a bit shocked at how good this was, considering my previous uneven encounters. This had breathtaking, ethereal fruit, that danced on the palate due to the beautiful acidity of the vintage. Everything was so vibrant and alive. I tasted this alongside the remnants of the '14 vintage which I had opened two days earlier. This was a significant step up from that vintage, which was a bit more earthy and withdrawn, but still held up quite well on day three. This struck me as a testament to how important it can be to have patience on these Bordeaux, for them to come around. I confess I typically open them too early.

My last of these, and similar to previous notes, this was quite rich and decadent. There is beautiful acidity that brings so much life and energy to the wine, making it so enticing, but not over-the-top (which I sometimes get from Italian wines, especially Chiantis). There are barely any telltale signs that this is from Sonoma - just a hint of rustic red fruit, but this is mainly black fruit. This is something I'll keep an eye out for in future vintages.

  • 2014 Château Canon

My last of these from this vintage. Like so many from '14, I find this a little aloof and impenetrable; some classy red fruit and structure, but still a little stiff and withdrawn.

7/30/2022 9:41:00 AM - Hi WineGuyDelMar and shr, thanks for the kind notes. I hadn't realized I was restricting comments. I just relaxed that restriction (I think), so hopefully people can comment now. Thanks.

11/22/2020 9:16:00 AM - I just bought several more of the '15 Ciel du Cheval myself, I totally agree. They currently have a sale online at $39 a bottle (though I'm in the club so I'm not sure if that's public or club price).

11/22/2020 9:05:00 AM - Hi familydoc, thanks for the recommendation; I haven't tried the Esploso. Yes, I've enjoyed quite a few of the Andrew Hill recently. I think the best of the bunch I've tried from a quality/price standpoint was the '15 Ciel du Cheval; very bright acidity - interesting style - delicious. I may get more. K&L have it at $50.

11/22/2020 7:52:00 AM - John- I saw a few of your notes from Andrew Will wines and was wondering if you had the chance to taste the Esploso Cab. I was getting it at club price south of $35 and remain convinced it's the best wine deal I've ever gotten. But in fairness it's like Andrew Will makes wine directly for my preferences.

8/1/2020 2:55:00 PM - Re your TN of the '13 Columbia Crest Walter Clore P.R., I tend to agree that "Napa has nothing with this quality/value" -- *particularly* if one was able to take advantage of discounts on this. [Cf. my TN of 12/14/19.] However, a tolerance of oak is probably also necessary... ;)

1/7/2017 9:16:00 PM - Hi wineotim, The only real heavy-hitter Bordeaux from '10 that I opened recently was the Haut Bailly. I'm a big fan of this producer, but really it turned out to be more of an exercise in considering its future potential vs. enjoying any realized potential. Similarly, recent openings of Bon Pasteur, Dame de Montrose and Gazin showed that they needed more time. However, as we speak I'm sipping '10 Malartic Lagriviere and it's a beauty, and showing great :) Overall, I'll be trying to sit longer on my '10 Bordeaux, if I can.

1/7/2017 4:31:00 PM - John, you have quite a few BDX in common with me, look forward to your reviews. Are you going to open any of the big time '10 vintage soon? I am hesitant currently. Also, I am going to buy a '10 Lafon Rochet!

3/18/2016 4:14:00 PM - Hi Motz, I think I may have a particular fondness for Lafon Rochet, perhaps more than most, so my rating may be more personal vs. in line with others' opinions. I find it to be particularly classy, classic, authentic. I attended the '10 UGC tasting in San Francisco where I tasted about 70 bottles of '10 Bordeaux in a couple of hours. Strangely the Lafon Rochet stood out for me as my favorite red of the tasting, keeping in mind some general price consideration (it was the one that 'sang' for me the most). The more recent bottle I had a month or two ago just underscored for me how lovely this wine is. I went ahead and ordered four or five more. All I can say is that I really like it and am baffled why it's not rated higher. I think La Dame and Cantamerle are lovely too in this vintage. it may be splitting hairs or comes down to personal taste. I recommend trying the Lafon Rochet youself to see - It's quite dry at this point in its evolution but even after a little decanting it opens very nicely and shows a lovely approachability and sweetness.

  • Motz says:

3/18/2016 4:05:00 PM - Hello John, I noticed you scored the 2010 Lafon Rochet a point higher than the same vintage La Dame Montrose and Cantemerle, both of which I thought were outstanding. Does the LR standout above the other two wines? Thanks.
