Deg. 15.02.2017 / 2013 base vintage with some reserve wine.
Beautifully layered, explosive aromatics of sweet red apples, small red berries, sweet spices, some saline mineral note too, but also sone nuts, some honey, white flowers. It's medium-full bodied and dense, with small creamy bubbles, but more vinous in style (as the house style is). High acidity cutting through the richness and beautiful length. An amazingly comlex and complete BdN of the highest level. This is like Burgundy with bubbles, vinous and beautiful.

By the glass at L'Effervescence in Tokyo. No detailed notes but very elegant and complex with an extremely fine bead. Stone fruit, apple, and floral notes dominant but delicate. An intellectual champagne that was perfect for the menu on the night. This was a treat to drink.

Lot 14/2 disgorged March 2018. Utterly gorgeous. Still on the upswing, but so good now. Spicy gorgeous spicy red apple with perfect richness and an almost psychedelic kaleidoscope of nuance. Really exceptional and along with the 2015, probably the best Maillons I've had.

All the 2014's are great at UC. We had them all at that day. For me the "weakest" and still great. Powerful, some red berries but elegant in the finish. I would wait not that much long too drink it. 93

Dinner at Coulisse (Amsterdam, NL): [Restaurant purchase] No detailed notes. A very interesting combination of both an intellectual wine with an elegant complexity and the enjoyment of easy drinkability. Medium+ intensity on the nose, but in a very elegant way, not in your face kinda way with some light fire stone, white peach, a bit of oxidative notes with marzipan. High acidity, very long finish. 93-94+

Deg. 02/16. Sadly, this bottle was corked. The nose was completely dead but on the palate there was so much intensity, so many layers of wonderfully balanced aromas, lots of tension that it overshadowed the TCA completely. I’m usually not in to the-more-vinous-the-better camp but this combined that celebral appeal and vinous complexity of great grower Champagnes with lots hedonistic pleasure and especially charm I often miss. A perfect combo. Despite the cork we almost emptied the bottle. This would have been easily a 96/97pts without the TCA.

TN: At first slightly, with time full-blown TCA aromas on the nose. On the palate there is so much complexity with layers and layers of aromas from caramel, toffee, to minerality in all shapes, dark berries and fresher zesty, lemony fruit. All delivered in UHD. Towards the finish some TCA comes forward and taints it. The wine is structured, yet ultra fine, highly elegant and balanced with a high freshness and very fine mousse. A masterpiece.

Decanting: Open and ready from the go, no decanting needed.

Tasted at a social event. 100% Pinot Noir, base vintage 2012. Unfortunately minor cork stain. But you could still identify nice floral top notes, fruit of pear, apple and citrus, layers of minerality and herbs. Extraordinary vibrant and lively palate. What a pity that this was flawed, otherwise easily 95 or more.

The NV version of Maillons tastes very, very young and hard to read. Explosive mousse, medium bubbles. Quite bound up in its mineral expressionnwith sharp acidity. Missing mid palate at his point. Perhaps much better in a few years but hard to tell.

The TCA was more apparent in the nose, but then on the palate, the wine was still largely intact and would hint at its greatness. Just for the record, the bottle was almost empty at the end of the evening (and we had plenty of alternatives). So flawed, but not totally undrinkable, even for someone who is sensitive to TCA like I am.

Very few bubbles, just a hint of effervescence. Complex aroma - fresh cherries, cherry ice cream, cherry coke, strawberries, red apple, vanilla and flowers. Flavor mirrors the aroma with vibrant red fruit. Slightly toastier after some air. Really, really good - it’s a shame this is so hard to find. 98 rating stands.

2018 Base, Disgorged Feb 2022.

Un champagne extraordinaire … au bout de 3/4 heures d’aération !
Il commençait par une vinosité un peu oxydative, une bulle fine belle et franche, de l’énergie a revendre.
Comme on avait ce jour-là, moulte bouteilles ouvertes, on y est retourné à la fin du repas, et là, la magie opéra! Il etait en place, fin, plus fruité, epicé, minéral, étiré et pur, vivifiant, énergisant… Une petite merveille de vinosité fine et fraiche, désaltérant et profond.

Rousseau Clos St Jacques and Corton-Charlemagne Dinner (Sepia - Chicago IL): Chiseled and minerally with lots of yellow and green apple, very long finish, maybe just a hint too tart. IMHO a bit more dosage would make this very good wine into a great wine.

Second time having this bottle, the experience is quite difference. The same explosive fruit at the beginning. Not as yeasty as last time I had it, but the nose change over time dramatically. Yogurt, cheesecake, apple tart, wow.
