A: deep ruby with some purple at the rim
N: ripe blueberry, blackberry, black plum, vanilla, clove, earth, a touch of VA
P: dry, 14.5% ABV, med acidity, med (+) ripe, smooth tannins, full body
C: good wine = balanced ripe black fruit and smooth tannins, med intensity, med complexity, med (+) concentration, med (+) finish. Very solid Barbera - fresh, clean, well done. While the VA is expected, this was just a bit too much for me, otherwise well done. Drink now or over next 5 years.

4/9/2024 - Lehto Likes this wine: 88 points

Area: San Rocco Seno d’Elvio (Barbaresco)
Age: Minimum 15-year-old vines
Vinification: Max 1 kilo grapes per vine. The whole vinification happens in cement tanks, before the wine is bottled.

A dark and almost completely violet color, where the wine primarily has a deep concentration of dark and red berries. Very powerful in its expression with a lower acidity and quite soft tannins due to the vinification in cement.

Disclaimer: Danish Importer of Rosanna Sandri.

This is a great example of a New World Barbera. Has typical kirsch/cherry flavors but a little more richness and lower acid than an average Italian Barbera. Tannin is subtle and smooth. Long finish. Very food friendly.

Took a flyer here, a lot of good notes on Filippo Sobrero, who is described by the Wassermans as a very traditional producer, including within Monprivato and Villero, that can produce disappointing but sometimes potentially magnificent wines. Not sure where this Barbera was grown, but in a lesser vintage, it was really not much more than a pale rose that, while sound, never developed after opening into anything of real interest.

I could be slightly underrating this- it was definitely one of the top few Barberas I've enjoyed. I was a little worried it would be hot/jammy at 15% ABV, but it wasn't at all. Just thick and voluptuous with surprisingly fresh, pure fruit. Deep, dark raspberry liqueur, black plums, violet floral shades almost like a Dolcetto (but less "grapey"), touches of slightly brighter blackberry with a bolt of crunchy acidity. You could tell it had some oak aging in a way, with a sort of gentle spice to it, but it was 95% about the fruit. Tannins are there, but very fine and powdery, never coarse. Still feels like a "classic" Italian wine with high acid and such, but not at all the austere style that requires a food pairing to be delicious. Again, I'm being conservative with my rating here, especially as it'll continue to expand and evolve really nicely in the short term. It's usually around $30, but I found it for $25. Sub-$30 is a steal.

spicy, ripe dark stone fruits, soft acids, weight and ripeness, little tannin, layers of fruit lingering with spicy and tart nuances... very nice with venison today, it's hearty and deep, but quite refreshing, the gamey meat gave it the perfect sounding board... probably not getting better, but it'll surely hold for a year or a few

Feminine soft and approachable. Typical Barbera mild color, showing a bit of age around the rim. Italian nose of sweet berry and cherry. Very distinctive entry of earthy rooty sappy stuff. Mature cherry and other red and black berries. Secondary spicy flavors. Very distinct. Italian spicy and acidic cherry with California ripeness.

Very mature nose. Color shows little of its age except for some clearing at the rim. Displays more tannin than expected. Still distinctly Barbera. Upfront, expressive, candied cherry and plum fruit. Some menthol and a touch of eucalyptus.

1961 Antonio Vallana e Figlio Barbera Cantina di Bacco

Piemonte DOC more

4/27/2024 - Montrealron Likes this wine: 96 points

Two virtually perfect examples opened for a Vallana themed dinner at La Campagnola restaurant in Lasalle, Québec, only five days after arriving from Italy.
Decanted and put back in rinsed bottles six hours earlier.
Full rich and dark colour, more like a 15-20 year old wine.
Amazing nose of mixed berries, gentle sweet spices, flowers and precious woods.
Deep and delicious in the mouth, without any hint of deterioration, or anything lees than an incredible balance.
Truly an honour to the memory of Bernardo Vallana, perhaps the greatest winemaker of his generation.
Also served that evening, two bottles each of Castello di Montalbano 1964 (93) and Cinque Castelli Riserva 1961 (94).
In each pair, both bottles were totally consistent.

Veeery nice Givoanni Rosso from Serralunga. Silky smooth with nice aftertaste. Low on tannins, rich, fruity. Works with or without food. Not the best Barbera ever, but a veru nice option to Nebbiolo if you want something to drink today and not wait 20 years.

Really nice wine, enjoyed with Spaghetti Bolognese but would have been lovely to have on its own. We drank this April 2024, purchased from Valhalla's Goat on Great Western Road. When googled it supposedly goes well with stewed meats, hard cheeses, braised meats, creamy risotto, pasta in tomato based sauces or anything with mushrooms. Delicious, a great recommendation from the staff at VG.

Absolutely loved it. This is still very much alive and kicking with all the classic notes of Braida with some mature notes. I would never have guessed 2001. It is many years ago last time I tried this in a much youngest vintage, but this brings me right back to the Dinner in Neive first time I had the pleasure of tasting Braida. Big recommendation

Dark reddish garnet in color, essentially opaque. Full, forward & attractive nose of ripe red fruit aromas of blueberries, cherries & mulberries with overtones of earthy/dusty & floral notes, spice notes, herbs & minerals. Medium bodied with a very good concentration of well balanced & smooth textured, plush, ripe fruit flavors of red cherries, blueberries & plums, herbs & minerals. Lingering finish. Drinks quite well at present with decanting & extended airing but should develop further with additional aging. A lovely & enjoyable Barbera. IMHO, there is no way objectively possible that this is a "65" point wine unless it was an off bottle.
