2021 Ridge Zinfandel JimsomareSanta Cruz Mountains more |
4/30/2024 - ptm Likes this wine: 92 pointsI have a very emotional attachment to this wine and vineyard. (I'm going beyond tasting notes here). I was introduced to this wine at a UCLA extension course on premiere growths and held at Wally's in west LA in about 1976. Among the French wines (Haut Brion, etc), the Jimso popped up and I was hooked. Ridge had a new club, ATP, and I latched on. Nearly 50 years later, I still have a special place in my heart for what Jimsomare has taught me about the richness of the wine experience. |

4/2/2024 - ptm wrote: 94 pointsThis is a remarkable Zin from Paso Robles. The balance of fruits, acidity, and finish are outstanding. I have just 2 bottles from Ridge's Z list, but I will have to augment this. This is a testimony to the outstanding grapes from Benito Dusi's vineyard. 1 person found this helpful, do you? 3/15/2024 - ptm Does not like this wine: 80 pointsI almost put this in the “flawed” bucket. In addition to being overly ripe and fruity, there is an off-putting metallic, tinny taste that I can’t quite put my finger on. Hopefully this only applies to the bottle I have. |

3/11/2024 - ptm wrote: 92 pointsI had made a private note to myself that this would peak at about 2022. I was wrong. This still has some legs, another couple of years. For those 1200 bottles that are still out there on CT, you are in luck. This is a very clean, restrained red fruit taste that the former winemaker Eric Baugher nailed on his release tasting notes in Jan 2020: "Dark garnet-red color. Aromas of ripe plum and cherry fruits, sweet oak, and complex gravel earth. Enters with sweet bramble fruit, rich tannins, toasted oak, and complex minerality. Refreshing acidity supports a long finish. EB (1/20)" |

11/14/2023 - ptm wrote: 90 pointsFirst visit to this winery on 11/4/23 and had a delightful tasting session with owner Bob Tillman. He is a gem. Snagged a case of this little treasure. Concur with other comments: lots of dark berries, pepper, and long finish. Not quite as well balanced as other Paso Syrahs, but quite enjoyable. |

10/28/2023 - ptm Likes this wine: 92 pointsVery fruit forward - just short of a "bomb" enough to make it quite enjoyable to pull and pour now. This is one of Anthony's best zins. |

10/24/2022 - ptm wrote: 88 pointsThis is a strange one. Enjoyed it at the Adelaida tasting room this past weekend. It was well-balanced and had a nice fruit forward initial taste (red raspberry). I brought home a case and now finding it lacking in acid (probably that quick finish mentioned earlier). Concur with the very faint cheese in the nose. It's not off-putting, but different. This will be interesting to follow (or not). Hopefully can upgrade it. |

10/21/2021 - ptm Likes this wine: 91 pointsThis is quite smooth and easy to drink. The carignane softens it up to make it quite drinkable now. I don't believe it has the structure to hold out for long. I would drink it within the next 2-3 years; a nice option while you wait for others to mature. |

10/12/2020 - ptm Likes this wine: 93 pointsQuite a treat immediately on opening - great balance of fruit, acidity, and undertones well-outlined by other reviewers. However, I’m not sure it has the structure to extend to 2030. This, of course, is not currently an issue. I believe it is at its peak right now. (Enjoyed with pappardelle with a marinara sauce) |

9/8/1981 - ptm wrote: 89 pointsActually entering this on 3/14/20, catching up on some old notes I had stashed away. Had this wine with a Heitz '67 Martha's Vineyard, would you believe. Paid $9.49 for this in October of 1976. My comment: "A very nice wine - not as fruity as the Heitz and had some slightly unpleasant veggie smells. Color/balance were excellent." |

9/25/2018 - ptm Likes this wine: 88 pointsIn the aggregate, all of the prior notes are quite fair. I enjoyed this wine with dominantly cherry and licorice properties as a very well constructed wine. It is imminently enjoyable as a good, every day, middle tier wine. No complaints. |

4/13/2018 - ptm Likes this wine: 94 pointsThank goodness Ridge decided to release this from the "library". Jumped at the chance to acquire more. This is an excellent, well-balanced zin that has matured nicely with less "in your face" fruit, but more elegance and just the right amount of acidity and tannin. I believe it's near or at its peak, but there is no need to hold on to. Drink and enjoy now. |
