Introduction

This was a tasting put on by the Victoria Wine society. It was a formal sit down event showcasing Chateau Beaucastel's terroir over the last 3 decades lead by proprietor and winemaker Tomas Perrin.

Flight 1 (1 note)

Red
2007 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Nose of dense fruit but it comes off very carbonic. Lots of tar, menthol and sage.
The palate is very tight. Massive drying tannins dominate while bright acidity keeps this fresh. Lots of current, plum, menthol and herb notes. Long finish accentuates some earthy notes.
Delicious, hold at least 10 years.

Flight 2 (1 note)

Red
2004 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
The nose on this is very clean. Leathered fruits and pretty perfume show very well. There is a touch of barnyard coming through.
Soft palate with moderate tannins and lush red fruits . Big body and balanced acidity, the oak is very well balanced here. Lots of garrigue and pepper on the moderately long finish.
Drinking well now but will become so much better... hold another 5 years.

Flight 3 (1 note)

Red
2000 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Very pretty aromatic nose to this vintage. Lots of ripe fruits with an undercurrent of fruit leather and herbal notes.
The palate shows beautiful floral, herbal and spice notes. Very well balanced but the tannins are still wound quite tight. The finish is long and floral.
Hold this for another 5-10 years.

Flight 4 (1 note)

Red
1998 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Bright nose of black tea, sage, bay leaf and a touch of menthol. This smells fantastic.
The palate shows tonnes of new leather with hints of black tea, orange rind and black pepper. A good dose of acidity keeps this fresh. The long finish is all leather. A very elegant wine.
Drinking well now but I would hold another 5-10 years.

Flight 5 (1 note)

Red
1995 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Showing a lot of age on the nose. Tones of leather, spice and black tea.
The palate is much the same with worn saddle, black tea and earth showing nicely. The fruit intensity is slipping a touch but over all it is very pretty. Long medicinal note on the finish.
Drink now - 2016.

Flight 6 (1 note)

Red
1994 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Lots of fruit to this wine. More than the 95 or 98 at this point.
This has a real concentrated palate of dark fruits, tar, truffle and black tea. The tannins are pretty soft and the body of the wine comes off a bit disjointed. Still, this drinks very well now and had a lovely plumy-truffle finish.
Drink now.

Flight 7 (1 note)

Red
1990 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
The 90 has a great brick colour to it with a ton of browning around the edges.
Lots of earthy notes with truffle and worn leather. The fruit is a bit muted.
The palate is beautifully elegant. Soft and pretty. Lots of violets, bacon, black tea and worn wood. There is a lot going on here and it's ever evolving.
Stunning. Second only to the 89.
Drink now will last another 5-10 years.

Flight 8 (1 note)

Red
1989 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Deeply concentrated core that shows a lot of sediment.
Beautiful nose of heather, bay leaf, garrigue and black tea. Worn oak is stunningly folded into the nose of this wine.
Dry, vibrant red fruits are still going strong on the palate. Bold tannins continue to give great structure to this fantastic classic vintage. Wonderful freshness due to the vibrant acidity. The finish is long and floral.
I found it hard to drink this because i found myself just smelling and smelling it...
Outstanding Quality.
Dazzling wine, drink now - 2015.

Closing

My favorite wines were the 89, 90 and 98 in that order. Each wine we tasted was fantastic in its own way though.
