Houston, TX

Introduction

Very much enjoyed this event. Much better wines than other similar events in Houston. Wasn't too crowded either. Hope the secret doesn't get too far out next year.

Flight 1 - Sparklers (8 notes)

Rosé - Sparkling
N.V. Jose Dhondt Champagne Rosé de Saignée Brut France, Champagne
85 points
Not sure what was up with this bottle, but it came across very sweet and candied - mostly strawberry flavors. Little acidity and a sweet finish.
Rosé - Sparkling
N.V. Montaudon Champagne Grande Rosé Brut France, Champagne
87 points
There was a funky aspect to the nose, which was otherwise toasted brioche and strawberry. Much better on the palate, which was herbal along with strawberry, cherry, and citrus. Couldn't get over those funky aromas, though. There are much better sparkling rosés out there.
Rosé - Sparkling
N.V. Camille Savès Champagne Grand Cru Brut Rosé France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
92 points
Strawberry shortcake, lemon, and mineral nose. Rich palate, excellent balance. Fantastic rosé Champagne.
Rosé - Sparkling
2006 Schramsberg Vineyards Brut Rosé USA, California, North Coast
91 points
Toasty and nutty with bright strawberry, pear, and citrus. Nicely balanced. The Pinot Noir component really comes through on this. On the short list of the best domestic sparkling rosés.
White - Sparkling
2007 Schramsberg Vineyards Blanc de Blancs USA, California, North Coast
90 points
Lemon yogurt and white toast. Creamy, yet refreshingly bright on the palate with nice, tiny bubbles.
Rosé - Sparkling
N.V. Delamotte Champagne Brut Rosé France, Champagne
92 points
Toasted brioche, cherry, and rose petals. Creamy and very drinkable.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Delamotte Champagne Brut France, Champagne
90 points
Nice flavors of citrus and toast. Really well balanced. The one thing keeping this away from a higher score is a lack of intensity of flavor.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Krug Champagne Brut Grande Cuvée France, Champagne
92 points
First time to experience the legend that is Krug - albeit this was a just a small taste. Toasted hazelnuts and lemon zest. Creamy, with fine bubbles. Great finish. Look forward to having more of this in the future.

Flight 2 - Red Burgundy (10 notes)

Red
2006 Domaine Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Ducs France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
90 points
There's nice fruit here, but this needs time.
Red
2006 Domaine Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru Caillerets France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
92 points
Delicious red fruit, earth, and spice. Perfectly balanced, IMHO.
Red
2007 Gérard Mugneret Vosne-Romanée France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée
89 points
Earthy cherries and minerals. Nice, if a bit uninteresting compared to the others I tried today.
Red
2007 Gérard Mugneret Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Boudots France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
89 points
Ripe black cherry and barnyard. Nice acidity.
Red
2006 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Fuées France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
90 points
Lots of minerality and earthiness on this. Cherry fruit.
Red
2006 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Chambolle-Musigny France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny
91 points
I really liked this. Beautifully balanced and rocking some rich cherry fruit with big whiffs of loam. The best QPR of the Burgs I tried today.
Red
2006 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Maréchale France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
91 points
Dark cherry, raspberry, forest floor, and ferrous minerals. Dry, and a tad austere on the palate. This needs time, but I think it has a promising future. 91+
Red
2007 Domaine Denis Bachelet Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin
91 points
Dirty red cherries and minerals. Excellent complexity and balance.
Red
2007 Serafin Père et Fils Charmes-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru
92 points
One of my favorite Burgs of the day. Black cherry and baking spices. Great balance and complexity.
Red
2007 Serafin Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin
91 points
Earthy and spicy cherry. Smooth.

89 points
Pear, stone fruits, and citrus with good minerality and moderate acidity.
White
2008 Wallace Brook Cellars Pinot Gris USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
86 points
Stone fruit and citrus. Low acidity, comes across rather sweet.
White
2009 Pichler-Krutzler Grüner Veltliner Frauengärten Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau
89 points
Lemon, nectarine, minerals. Slightly off-dry.
Red
2008 Beaux Frères Pinot Noir Beaux Frères Vineyard USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Ribbon Ridge
90 points
Spicy black cherry. Nice grip. A bit too much alcohol on the finish.
Red
2007 Domaine Beau Mistral Rasteau St.-Martin France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Rasteau
90 points
Ripe cherry, earthy spices. Kirsch finish.
Red
2005 Cornerstone Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain USA, California, Napa Valley, Howell Mountain
87 points
I found this to be over-oaked and too hot. Not a good value.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2005 Royal Tokaji Wine Co. Tokaji Aszú 5 Puttonyos Hungary, Tokaji
89 points
Having loved the 2003, I was a bit disappointed. Deeply honeyed but lacking acidity, so it comes across slightly cloying. Long, spicy finish.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2005 Domaine Marc Kreydenweiss Pinot Gris Clos Rebberg Sélection de Grains Nobles France, Alsace
92 points
Honey, citrus, and apricot. Nice acidity. Long finish.
