The Bristol - Chicago IL

Introduction

Dinner with some great friends...and great wines.

Flight 1 - White Burgundy (2 notes)

White
1991 Marquis de Laguiche (Joseph Drouhin) Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru
92 points
Nicely advanced fruit on nose with a great touch of wintergreen to start. Mint faded after about 15 minutes but more fruit started to unfold on both the nose and palate. This wine clearly showed its advance age but was bolstered by nice acidity and spice for at least an hour. Not quite as interesting as another bottle from earlier this year, but still lively and interesting.
White
1985 Louis Jadot Chevalier-Montrachet Les Demoiselles Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
83 points
Lovely nose showed evolved fruit with lots of spice. Palate was mostly devoid of fruit but showed lots of acidity dominating from middle through finish. While interesting and enjoyable, this was not at the level I want from Jadot Demoiselles, even at 25+ years.

Flight 2 - 1997 Amoureuses (2 notes)

Red
1997 Louis Jadot Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
91 points
Fascinating wine. Popped and poured from my cellar at a great local restaurant. Started with massive gobs of Asian spice and incredibly rich, lush fruit. Black and red fruit combination continued on to the palate. Palate kept getting increasingly interesting...but because the restaurant was warm we asked for the wines to be chilled down. Once brought down to the mid 60s, the wine never got back to the previous level of being interesting. 92 or 93 points early on, then 89 or 90 points an hour later. Tough to understand and explain....
Red
1997 Domaine G. Roumier / Christophe Roumier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
92 points
Paired with the completely contrasting Jadot 97 Amoureuses, which was far more accessible and hedonistic. Lots of spice from the start but with lean and glorious fruit. Over several hours this wine came forward and retreated numerous times. Sometime forward, sometime more lean, the spice and acidic spine never wavered. Compared with lots of other 97s, have no fear of this falling apart.

Flight 3 - 2001 Amoureuses (2 notes)

Red
2001 Domaine G. Roumier / Christophe Roumier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
91 points
Another wine that was tough to assess. Even though it was decanted, this showed lots of mustiness when poured. Lean fruit from start to finish, this really showed lots of spice on the palate even if not on the nose. Very silky tannins stand out a bit on finish. This will really take at least another 10 years to show its full potential. Better than another bottle from a few years back.
Red
2001 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
92 points
Fascinating and exciting contrast with the Roumier 2001 Amoureuses in the next glass. This wine was far more consistent throughout the evening vs. the Roumier which kept evolving, sometimes for better, sometimes not so much. This wine was nicely perfumed with flavors of black and red cherries. Incredibly elegant and beautifully constructed, this wine had a consistent and clear linear finish. This bottle gave great pleasure from start to finish.
