Tasted October 22, 2011 by ews3 with 800 views
Introduction
Random assortment of notes, partial notes, or impressions fromt he wines I tasted at PDH BerserkerFest. The food was solid and it was fun to meet some of the WB community.
Flight 1 (21 notes)
White
2005 Weingut Keller Kirchspiel Riesling Großes Gewächs
91 points
consistent with prior notes -- lots of honeycomb on this.
White
2006 Scholium Project Heliopolis Delu
85 points
lots of acid -- not much else coming off of this at present.
White
2007 Aubert Chardonnay Ritchie Vineyard
94 points
always nice -- more oak and toast on this bottle than i remember from past bottles.
Red
2000 Vietti Barolo Brunate
92 points
i really enjoyed this -- very floral with tons of rose petals. med(+) acidity.
Red
2007 Kutch Pinot Noir Kanzler Vineyard
89 points
most disappointing bottle i have had of this -- fruit is a little muted and it may be shut down at present. i continue to be optimistic about the long term on this wine but recommend holding or decanting.
White - Off-dry
1971 Staatsweingut Trier Ockfener Bockstein Riesling Auslese
88 points
madeirized, but pleasantly so. nice honeycomb notes show through
White - Off-dry
2000 Trimbach Pinot Gris Hommage a Jeanne
93 points
really interesting spice aroma. enjoyed this quite a bit.
Red
2005 Lillian Winery Syrah Blue Label
96 points
awesome and well liked by the table. black pepper, meat, eucalyptus. long, dark fruity finish. still needs time.
Red
2006 Lillian Winery Syrah
94 points
A generous contribution to our table from another table so we could try this side by side with the 05 Blue Label. This showed more reserved, but still had quite a bit of fruit. Meat and black fruit. less complexity than the blue -- whether because of barrel age or vintage. long finish. lovely wine.
Red
1996 Pahlmeyer Merlot
91 points
really nice and a surprise to me. lots of acidity. lovely secondary notes are creeping in and this will continue to age well.
White - Sparkling
Red
1987 Pahlmeyer Proprietary Red Caldwell Vineyard
93 points
delicious. caramel dominated, this isalmost fully secondary at this point, but holding up well.
Red
1997 Kongsgaard Merlot
93 points
surprisingly youthful. nice black fruit profile. med(+) finish. i didnt even know there was kongsgaard merlot.
Red
2006 DuMOL Syrah Russian River Valley
91 points
really nice, fruit-forward profile. dark berry fruit. less noticeable heat than the KB.
White - Off-dry
1973 Wente Vineyards Riesling Auslese
88 points
no note. this was interesting and surprisingly decent.
White
2010 Scholium Project Riquewihr Lost Slough Vineyards
89 points
liked the nose better than the palate. it did develop some with air
Red
1994 La Jota Cabernet Sauvignon Anniversary Release
94 points
this bottle was great. nice secondary flavors of tobacco and caramel, but still a surprising amount of fruit. in a good place.
White
2009 Rivers-Marie Chardonnay B. Thieriot Vineyard
91 points
nice crisp style. i dont necessarily get the hype on this, but the wine is well made and a style i generally like.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2001 Château Rieussec
96 points
awesome bottle of sauternes. still very youthful, with stone fruit, minerality, and honey.
