Flight 2 - Mostly Meursault Charmes (6 notes)

White
2004 Henri Boillot Meursault 1er Cru Les Charmes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
93 points
Fresh apple aromas with lots of spice, roasted nuts, nicely floral. Very classically Meursault, with palate consistent with aromas. Good acid, minerality and length.
White
2007 Henri Boillot Meursault 1er Cru Les Charmes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
91 points
Mostly apple aromas with some lemon hints. Similar fruit on palate, quite lean but somewhat lacking in perceived acidity and energy. If tasted blind, I would not have thought this 2007, but a less classic vintage, perhaps 2005.
White
1999 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault Clos de la Barre France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
flawed
Very oxidized.
White
2002 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault 1er Cru Charmes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
94 points
I haven't had this wine in at least 3-4 years, and it was as good or better than I last remember. Ripe orchard fruit with intense fruit and oak spice aromas. Same powerful, ripe fruit on palate, with a long finish displaying good supporting structure.
White
2005 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault 1er Cru Charmes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
flawed
Very muted, slightly bitter finish. Inconsistent with how this has tasted before, so I think slightly corked.
White
2006 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault 1er Cru Charmes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
92 points
Lush and powerful start. Ripe stone fruit aromas and flavors. Very good energy and persistence for the 2006 vintage.

Flight 3 - Younger Gevrey-Chambertin Grand Cru (7 notes)

Red
2001 Domaine Perrot-Minot Mazoyères-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru
89 points
Gamy aromas to start showing lots of Gevrey animale character along with some new oak that hasn't yet fully integrated. Good fruit on palate with some real power. Still most likely improving. Open a couple of hours before serving, but not decanted.
Red
2000 Domaine Prieuré Roch Chambertin-Clos de Bèze France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru
89 points
Sensational perfumed aromas to start with classically "Leroy" styled aromas. Unfortunately not as "Leroy" on the palate with very ripe red and black fruit showing a slightly muddy character and very advanced finish. "94 point" nose and "84 point" palate.
Red
2000 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Charmes-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru
90 points
Open a couple of hours, not decanted. Mostly red fruit aromas with an assertive earthy element. More ripe fruit on palate with modest spice. Good balance. At its peak today.
Red
2002 Domaine Ponsot Chapelle-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru
93 points
Open and decanted almost 3 hours before serving. Lush red and black fruit aromas with meaty spice. Slightly more black fruit oriented on palate, long, dense and slightly gamy on finish in a typical Gevrey-Chambertin manner. Clearly still in its infancy. A fascinating contrast to the charmingly rustic Trapet 2002 Chapelle-Chambertin in the next glass.
Red
2002 Domaine Trapet Chapelle-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru
92 points
Black and red cherry aromas with real intensity and seemingly stern aromas. Red and black cherry flavors, very firmly structured and a great finsih with lots of power and energy. Fascinating contrast to the more ripe, lush Ponsot 2002 Chapelle-Chambertin in the next glass.
Red
2000 Domaine Trapet Chapelle-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru
90 points
Mostly red fruit with simple spice and slightly meaty character. Sweet is nicely sweet and ripe on palate, but a bit angular.
Red
2002 Domaine Trapet Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru
94 points
Open and decanted 2+ hours before serving. Ripe black cherry and boysenberry aromas with some background dark chocolate. Ripe black fruit on palate, long, powerful and precise, with some great spice at the end. Group's Wine of the Night, for me tied with Lafon's 2002 Meursault Charmes.

Flight 4 - To Finish (1 note)

White - Sweet/Dessert
1997 René Renou Bonnezeaux Cuvée Anne France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Bonnezeaux
87 points
Advanced. Ripe apricot aromas with lush but simple fruit on palate.

Flight 5 - After-Party (2 notes)

Red
1957 Cantina Mascarello Barolo Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
86 points
Popped and poured. Charming aromas of dried rose petals and oolong tea. Not much of interest on the palate, perhaps some dried out fruit and lots of acidity. Got more shrill in glass after 20 minutes. Interestingly, Gary says it was better a couple of days later.
Red
1999 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
93 points
Popped and poured, which was an injustice for this amazing wine. All black fruit on nose and palate with plenty of spice, much from new oak. Lots and lots of power and concentration come through, particularly on dense finish.
