Dinner with xhoser: old & new world comparisons

Adelle's, Wheaton

Tasted September 18, 2012 by AllRed with 612 views

Introduction

xhoser was back in town and got together with the locals for dinner at Adelle's, which features zero corkage on Tuesdays. The theme matched up examples of varietals from the old and new world. The restaurant put us in a separate room off to the side, which I appreciated, and also provided two good stems per taster. I wasn't enthralled by the food, but they were otherwise very accomodating and happy to have us, so I will definitely be back to give the kitchen another shot.

White - Sparkling
1975 René Collard Champagne Brut Cuvée Réservée France, Champagne
89 points
Light golden color with notes of cashew butter, apple and bread. Medium bead. Apple, dough, citrus and roasted nut flavors; tart acidity. The citrus qualities came on strong as this opened over the course of the evening. Unique- not for everyone. Thanks for sharing, xhoser. 89-90 pts.
White - Sparkling
2007 Schramsberg Vineyards Blanc de Noirs Brut USA, California, North Coast
91 points
Pale color. Pear, floral and mineral notes with a nice toasty overtone. Fine bead with flavors of mineral & stones, citrus and red berries. Nice finish.

Flight 2 - Riesling (2 notes)

White
2002 F.X. Pichler Riesling Smaragd Loibner Berg Austria, Niederösterreich, Wachau
flawed
Unfortunately this bottle was corked. At first it was very subtle, and hid beneath sulphur and petrol qualities, rearing it's ugly head just long enough to make you wonder if it was really there. However, as the night wore on it got worse, as is often the case with TCA.
White
2009 Wyncroft Riesling Avonlea Vineyard USA, Michigan, Lake Michigan Shore
89 points
Aromas of petrol, minerals and apple. Has a rich texture and flavors of white fruit, lemon and mineral. 89-90 pts.

Flight 3 - Chardonnay (2 notes)

White
2008 Domaine / Maison Vincent Girardin Meursault Les Tillets France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
91 points
Deep yellow color. Notes of apple and stone with a nice, subtle toasty undertone. A full-bodied white featuring flavors of apple, vanilla cream, stones, citrus, mineral and toast. Long finish.
White
2007 Mount Eden Vineyards Chardonnay Santa Cruz Mountains USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains
93 points
Deep color. Reticent...no bouquet at first, with very simple apple, vanilla and roa qualities on the palate. It opened up over a couple of hours though, revealing hazelnut, roasted almond, pear and apple and creme brûlée aromas. Full-bodied, with baked apple, butterscotch and hazelnut flavors, picking up a wet stone quality on the long finish. Recommend holding this for a couple of years yet, or give it an hour or two in a decanter. Could easily add a point or two at peak.

Flight 4 - Pinot Noir (2 notes)

Red
2009 Bouchard Père et Fils Vosne-Romanée France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée
90 points
Deep ruby color. Aromas of cherries and mineral with wonderful, elegant floral overtones. Light- to medium-bodied, with lovely red cherry and floral qualities with good underlying acidity. This wine is all about elegance and finesse. Lovely.
Red
2009 A.P. Vin Pinot Noir Rosella's Vineyard USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Lucia Highlands
91 points
Deep color. Aromas of earthy cherry cola, lavender and black cherry with a healthy dose of funk. Medium-bodied with cherry, cola, cinnamon and spice flavors. Finishes well.

Flight 5 - Sangiovese (1 note)

Red
1997 Antinori Tignanello Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
92 points
Garnet color. The bouquet features violets, sandalwood, red currants and just a hint of leather. Well-balanced. Has balance and depth with red fruit- currants, sandalwood and spice with hints of earth. Finishes well. This had been decanted briefly off its sediment and rebottled. Drinking very well now with a long life ahead. 92+ pts.

Flight 6 - Merlot (2 notes)

Red
2000 Château Quinault L'Enclos France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
92 points
Deep crimson color. Aromas of plum, forest floor and earth, black currant and graphite. Nicely balanced, with lovely currant, red berry, mineral, floral and earth notes on the palate. Finishes well. No harm in enjoying this now, though it will last a good long while. 92+ pts.
Red
2000 Andrew Will Merlot Pepper Bridge Vineyard USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Walla Walla Valley
90 points
The first ten acres of the Pepper Bridge Vineyard were planted in 1991 with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvinon. This was the last Andrew Will wine from the Pepper Bridge Vineyard.

Decanted off its sediment and rebottled approx two and a half hours before we got around to it. Aromas of perfumed red fruit and plum and limestone. Medium-bodied. Flavors of plum and black raspberry with a subtle earthy note. Tannins have not fully integrated and are a bit chewy. I am not sure where this is headed and would drink up before the fruit fades away.

Flight 7 - Syrah (2 notes)

Red
2005 Domaine Gallet (Henri et Philippe) Côte-Rôtie France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
91 points
Decanted briefly off its sediment and rebottled about two and a half hours before we tasted it. Deep color. Aromas of tapenade, pepper, black fruit and bacon. Good acidity on the palate; black fruit, pepper and spice flavors, picking up the tapenade quality on the finish. Should be paired with a meal. 91+ pts.
Red
2005 Pax Syrah Walker Vine Hill USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
92 points
Opaque garnet color. Notes of black fruit, bacon, violets and roasted meat. Full-bodied, this is integrating its tannins nicely. Flavors of black fruit, meat, spice and pepper. Nice finish. Drink now with decanting or hold a couple of year yet. 92+ pts.

Flight 8 - Dessert (1 note)

White - Sweet/Dessert
2009 Joseph Phelps Eisrébe USA, California, Napa Valley, St. Helena
90 points
Light color. Aromas of honeysuckle, peach and orange blossom honey. Pineapple, honeysuckle and lavender honey flavors. Nice finish. 90+ pts.
