Introduction

Capping off Charleston 2013, this was a fantastic end to the weekend.

Flight 1 (2 notes)

White - Sparkling
1996 Henriot Champagne Brut Millésimé France, Champagne
92 points
A bit of age shows with some hazelnut and brioche, but is balanced with some interesting red apple peel. Good amount of finesse and fairly elegant.

N.V. Krug Champagne Brut Grande Cuvée France, Champagne

Cork was removed and lost at the restaurant somehow, so don't know the disgorgement date on this one, but my guess is it was on the younger side. Shows silky mousse with red apples, honey, hints of orange peel.

White
2009 Domaine Ponsot Morey St. Denis 1er Cru Clos des Monts Luisants Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru
93 points
This was awesomely different. Pineapple, pear, honey, apple, marshmallow, hint of runny cheese. Thought it drank almost like a dessert wine with no residual sugar!

Flight 3 (1 note)

Red
2004 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
93 points
Had two bottles of this at the same time, and they were totally different. Bottle 1 was very fruit forward, and almost showing some oxidized notes to me, while bottle 2 was a bretty, mushroomy CdP that would have been at home next to Pegau in a lineup. Amazing bottle variation; my guess is that bottle 1 had an iffy cork, and got much more oxygen over the last decade than bottle 2. Rating is for bretty bottle 2 :)

Flight 4 (2 notes)

Red
1975 Château Margaux France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
90 points
Totally into secondary flavors of funky leather, barnyard, with gamey, iron-filled meat. Pretty light and smooth at this point. Some question on cork taint to start, but it blew off and both bottles were very nice. Fun to drink this.

Red
2006 Sine Qua Non Syrah Raven Series USA, California, Central Coast

Completely in line with my past notes. Bacon fat, blueberry, vanilla cake, florals, slight hint of eucalyptus, and more. Paired awesome with antelope, and as was noted, this is great 'helicopter culled, adrenaline-free' Syrah :)

Flight 5 (2 notes)

White - Sweet/Dessert
1989 Château d'Yquem France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
95 points
My second bottle of D'yquem, and again does not disappoint. Lush, rich, silky, and smooth, this shows apricot, peach, spice, honey, and something I perceive as a fresh linen scent. Awesome.

Red - Fortified
1964 Quinta do Noval Porto Vintage Nacional Portugal, Douro, Porto

Finished off dinner with this next to the D'yquem. Coffee, raisins, anise, cardamom, orange peel, this was a great end to a great night.
