Introduction

First of all i must thank Rob Hansult for both the Rieslings and the long trip west :) the doors of this house are always open to you brother.
Another huge thanks to Eric and Fernando - glad to have you guys here and taste these wines with you.

Small note on the KMV Project - this is Rob's wine and i honestly have no other name for it yet.

the Duel of the 2001s was amazing. Both of them showing both the power of the vintage and the respective qualities of their region.

Flight 1 (6 notes)

White
2009 Van Volxem Wiltinger Braunfels Riesling Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

peach, stone, the lees add a lovely bitter touch and some creaminess to the middle. bitter melon notes. by morning (half a glass left) this was really getting there... (yes i know.. I like wines with more age :P) more peachy on the nose. sleeker leaner mid with a nice finish. Very good. Some res sugar present but drinks almost dry.
White
2008 Markus Molitor Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

IMO this is not in the best place right now. Rather between shedding some fruit and gaining the complexity. Now will it gain the complexity? i cannot be sure. The wine is ripe with peaches and apricots dominating. good acidity in the mid with a touch of tropical notes as well as citrus. Wishing for more body and more spicy mid. Good long finish. A nice wine indeed - perhaps a lighter spat? in truth. I would put it away personally but i am the weird one :)
White - Off-dry
2002 Hessische Staatsweingüter Kloster Eberbach Rauenthaler Baiken Riesling Spätlese Germany, Rheingau
90 points
Some people noticed a light hint of TCA. i am not able to taste TCA thus cannot comment.

more masculine than the Molitor, red berries, rich middle with a hint of warmth on the finish. Had a hard time standing up to the 2001s but it is not a wine in the same class. Ripe and powerful without being sweet. Good wine.
White - Off-dry
2001 Von Schubert Maximin Grünhäuser Abtsberg Riesling Spätlese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
95 points
this is the feminine foil to the masculinity of Weil. flowers and honey notes dominate the nose, touch of red berries in the mid but more toward apple and white peach, finish has no end. This has tons of life in it an continued to improve over the evening. Spices and herbs on finish. Just excellent.

2001 Weingut Robert Weil Kiedricher Gräfenberg Riesling Spätlese Germany, Rheingau

my last bottle. This is incredibly good. went toe to toe with Von Schubert, and it was hard to say who won by the end. This edges it out for me just a touch but both wines were just incredible.

red berries, loads of powerful aromas, middle is rich, berries and cream and peach, loooong finish. spices, ginger in the middle, fruit ranging from apricots to tart red berries. and POWER. Rheingau showing its beauty. This vineyard has always been my fav in the Rheingau - and i think it shows the power and class of the region.
White
1985 Ferdinand Pieroth Burg-Layer Schloßkapelle Pieroth Blue Germany, Nahe

we will call it a riesling blend because... who knows?
cheesy and funky at the start, with more peach coming in later. good mid with a bit of oxidation but still full of ripe fruit. orange but lighter color than i would have expected. good acidity on the finish. honey notes. lovely.

Flight 2 (2 notes)

UMM.... my bad - i entered the wine as KVM instead of KMV... call it dyslexia... or to much "retyring" of wines. :)

Red
2005 Giacomo Conterno Barbera d'Alba Cascina Francia Italy, Piedmont, Alba, Barbera d'Alba
93 points
Ripe cherry, rich, touch of vanilla, middle is full of sweet macerated cherry. touch of grape skins on the finish. This is my first taste of a well aged Conterno Barbera...and i must say its amazingly good. Cherry dominates overall but the balance and acidity keep this wine fresh. great stuff!

2010 KMV Project Red Bordeaux Blend USA, New York, Long Island, North Fork

This is my second time tasting this wine. I will combine the notes from last night with the first time and the small taste i had today. This is not the real name of the wine. But Rob was generous enough to share a preview with us. This shows the amazing potential of LI wines. IMO

Rich ripe nose, black fruit dominate, some tobacco, blueberry and plum. Middle needed time to open. Last night it wasnt as put together as it is now. This wine is one to put away for sure - it needs time. Mid is rich but with poweful acidity that keeps it fresh. Black fruit dominate the middle. Long tangy finish. Very good.

Flight 3 (2 notes)

White - Off-dry
2010 Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling 'Rotlay' Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

OK... this is not an auslese... this is a BA/TBA powerhouse with notes of Eiswein. This wine grips your palate and pulls skin off your teeth. Peach, cream, tropical fruit, silky smooth and the spike of acidity that would impale the unwary. DONT TOUCH THIS. potential is limitless. Amazing wine.

Dreamy eiswein. hitting all the notes one could hope for. Peachy, creamy, oranges and marmalade, touch of oxidative note that enhances the wine. endless finish... Ahhhh wine. the acidity is there to keep it from cloying. went amazing with sour-cream cake and fruit "sauce" YUM.
