Introduction

Tasting in the very nice Enoteca Regionale del Barbaresco. Located next to the Tower and in an old church building. A comparison across Barbaresci with different oak treatment, and from different cru.

Red
2011 Giuseppe Nada Barbaresco Casot Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of dried red fruit and violets. Developing.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, high alcohol, puckering high tannins, full body. Pronounced flavour intensity, with flavours of dried red cherry, redcurrant, and strawberry. Long finish.
Good quality. Still young. At least another 5+ years.
Aged in large oak casks.

2011 Cascina Morassino Barbaresco Ovello Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
Appearance is clear, medium intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, pronounced intensity, with toasted vanilla oak covering up the fruit. Youthful.
On the palate, dry, medium+ acidity, medium+ alcohol, creamy high tannins, full body. Pronounced flavour intensity, with flavours of toasted vanilla oak and sweet dark cherries. Long finish.
Good quality modern style. Needs another 5+ years for the oak to integrate and tone down to allow the fruit to show.
Aged in small French oak barriques.

2011 Azienda Vitivinicola Mainerdo Barbaresco Gudru Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of sweet red cherries and slight soy sauce. Developing.
On the palate, dry, medium+ acidity, medium+ alcohol,dry puckering high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of sweet red cherries and strawberries. Hint of soy sauce. Long finish.
Good quality. Maybe another 3-4 years for the tannins to smoothen out and should be drinking well.
Aged in large oak casks.

2010 Beni di Batasiolo Barbaresco Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is medium+ intensity, with aromas of barnyard, cheese, and earth. Developing.
On the palate, dry, medium acidity, medium+ alcohol, medium tannins, medium body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of earth, iron minerality, and red cherries. Some florality with more air. Medium finish.
Lighter and feminine Barbaresco from Treiso. Acceptable quality. Doesn't really feel like it could improve much with further ageing.

2010 Ugo Lequio Barbaresco Gallina Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium intensity, with aromas of red cherries. Youthful.
On the palate, dry, medium+ acidity, medium+ alcohol, dry puckering high tannins, medium+ body. Medium flavour intensity, with flavours of sour red cherries. Medium+ finish.
Acceptable quality. Needs a few years for the tannins to smoothen, but on the simple side, somehow lacking the depth needed to improve with further ageing.
