Sun Wah BBQ, Chicago IL

Tasted April 4, 2014 by KeithAkers with 365 views

Introduction

Salil was in town for a conference. This presented the perfect opportunity to open some bottles again. So, several of us gathered up at Sun Wah to eat duck and drink even more wine after the Chardonnay Shoot-Out

Flight 1 (6 notes)

White
2009 Rhys Chardonnay Alpine Vineyard USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains
92 points
Nose: The nose is deep and balanced with navel oranges, red apples, lemon curds, citrus tones, minerals, white fruits, and some pears. There is excellent layering to the nose already with a real classiness.

Taste: Medium/full bodied with medium/high acidity. The structure is youthful, but there is polish to the feel with navel oranges, lemon curds, citrus tones, white fruits, and a very attractive mineral base.

Overall: This could've used some more air, but it was still a really good young chardonnay. There is a lot to like and it will be interesting to see where this goes with age.

Red
1998 Domaine de Vallouit Hermitage Cuvée Spéciale Les Greffières France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
94 points
Nose: This is an old school Hermitage with olive tapenade, wild game, black fruits, roasted meats, campfire embers, and some animale tones. The nose is deep with a real rustic and savory edge to it.

Taste: Full bodied with medium acidity and chewy tannins. While the tannins are most certainly there, they aren't too overpowering with olive tapenade, wild game, black fruits, black cherries, campfire embers, and a good dose of animale tones on the back end.

Overall: This was a real treat. This is sadly in the extinct producers category, but it's great to come across this and have the pleasure to try something that harkens to a different era.
White
2012 Rippon Riesling Mature Vine New Zealand, South Island, Otago, Lake Wanaka
89 points
Nose: There is a real nice freshness to the nose with lemon zest, citrus, pears, apples, and some white fruits. There is decent depth to this with a very airy quality to the tones too.

Taste: Lighter bodied with crisp medium+ acidity. The acidity is noticeable with citrus tones, pears, apples, and white fruits.

Overall: This was a tasty and balanced riesling. The freshness on the nose certainly carried over to the palate while having excellent balance too.
White - Off-dry
1993 Zilliken (Forstmeister Geltz) Saarburger Rausch Riesling Spätlese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
91 points
Nose: There is a bit of sulfur on the nose with some egg tones, but it blows off into peaches, wax, candied apples, petrol, and some mineral tones.

Taste: Medium bodied with medium+ acidity. The acidity is well in place and provides a nice spine with honey tones, peaches, wax, candied apples, and some minerals

Overall: This was an excellent 20 yr old riesling. It had the expected more golden color and it really came together more with air.
White - Off-dry
1999 Dönnhoff Oberhäuser Brücke Riesling Spätlese Germany, Nahe
91 points
Nose: There is a distinct air of maturity and poise to the nose with quince, peaches, green apples, minerals, and a hint of sulfur tones. There is excellent depth and layering with some punch to the fruit too.

Taste: Medium bodied with medium+ acidity. The feel is very polished and layered with quince, peaches, green apples, minerals, and a good amount of pears.

Overall: This was a lovely and mature Donnhoff. It still has a long way to go, but that youthful zest has turned into confident poise.
White - Off-dry
2002 Dönnhoff Schloßböckelheimer Kupfergrube Riesling Spätlese Germany, Nahe
91 points
Nose: There is a real high-toned nature to the nose with a lot of florals, nectarines, white peaches, apricots, and green apples. Though this shows more fruit, there is a very good mineral streak underneath.

Taste: Medium bodied with medium+ acidity. The acidity is still very noticeable, but it is refreshing at the same time. The feel is polished and deft with nectarines, white peaches, floral tones, minerals, and bits of apricots.

Overall: This was a beautiful Donnhoff. There is still a lot of youth and freshness to this, but it does show off the balance of some maturity.
