4 Days 4 Great Events with good friends at great restaurants with some great wines. Need we say more?

Flight 1 - The Square London (8 notes)

White - Sparkling
1995 Krug Champagne Vintage Brut France, Champagne
94 points
Dark golden in colour. Open on the nose, rich fruit, ripe, very toasty brioche, light honey note. Well round on the palate and well aged, feel the part at this stage and we would dare say it's at its peak now . Such a beautiful wine. 94

2011 Mud House Wines Sauvignon Blanc New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough
91 points
Clear, light in colour. Grassy on the nose, clean nose, no oak here and the wine expresses nicely the fruit and has a nice mineral side to it. Good acidity, well structured in general and very enjoyable. Could use some more depth if we were to be critical of it.90- 91

2000 Cantina Terlan Chardonnay Rarity Italy, Trentino-Alto Adige, Alto Adige, Terlano
94 points
Takes its time to develop and we would suggest decanting this wine at this stage.
On open it was buttoned down, closed. Given time ( like 1 hour) the wine developed nicely, showing citrus notes, lemony. It also gained weight on the palate and depth . Very mineral as expected and well matured. Pure and elegant wine. Has easily another 10 years of evolution. Among the best whites Italy has to offer and among the best Chardonnays we have come across. 94 for now but could easily be a future 97 .

1990 Château Cos d'Estournel France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
96 points
Double decanted for about 2 hours and observed over a good hour. Needs decanting. Side by side with las cases 85 ( Papies 95) and mouton 1986 (Papies 95) and was the better of the trio.
The nose is open from the start, 1990 showing clearly and even the usually austere Cos was very giving with a rich core of fruit. We have tried this wine a few times but on the day it felt just the number and easily the best we have come across . Nose shows a few secondary notes, still nice peppery side, light leather but with the 1990 ripe fruit core too. The palate followed the tune, good rich fruit core, very mineral, good acidity and just so well balanced and elegant. Magnificent wine 96 has easily another 10 years at this level but drinks beautifully now.

1985 Château Léoville Las Cases France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
95 points
Double decanted for about 2 hours and observed over a good hour. Needs decanting. Side by side with Cos 90( Papies 96) and mouton 1986 (Papies 95). Our favourite of the 85s did not fail us albeit not the best performance we have had from it.
Still healthy and marching on albeit the age does lend itself to bottle variation. Open on the nose, well developed but still healthy with a good core of fruit. Herbal side to it, leather and as time went by developed a smoky/ roast meat side that added a new dimension. As always an excellent wine. Good life ahead of it too but better drink some sooner than later.95

1986 Château Mouton Rothschild France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
95 points
Double decanted for about 2 hours and observed over a good hour. Needs a lot of decanting. We should have done more as it only showed its true face at the end of our dinner.Side by side with Cos 90( Papies 96) and las cases 1985(Papies 95).
Amazingly it felt still very young! We have tried this wine a few times and have had a lot of bottle variation too. Smoky side on the nose, still good core of rich dark fruit, elegant and very balanced. Light leathery side, light pepper but still a healthy and solid core of dark fruits ,good acidity and impressively fresh.always a great experience albeit not the best we have had with this great wine. 95 on the day and has a loooong life ahead

Recorked in 2003.
A testament to the great pre communist winemaking in the area and why people like Hugh Johnson embarked on such a journey to revive these great wines.
Came at the end of a long line up of great wines, Cos 90, Mouton 86, LLC 85 and a lesser wine would have faded away into palate fatigue. But not this one. For many it was actually the wine of the evening. Still healthy and in a way fresh, effortlessly balanced, good acidity, honey notes, rich core..... We can go on and on here but just a majestic wine from a by gone era. 96-99

1985 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Charmes-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru
93 points
Light in colour, delicate, full on bricking. The nose is just beautiful, open from the start, expressive, secondary and beyond. Complex and delicate , fragile almost on the palate and we chose not to decant of course. Gone is the exuberance of youth and the dense core of fruit. Beautiful in a way but also clear that it's best days are behind it. Drink now and in a hurry. 93-94

1990 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
98 points
Requires decanting. We decanted and followed over a good 2 hours and it really developed into something magical and at par to what we had 6 months ago too. The nose is a expressive, with a mixture of roast meat, smoky and red fruits. On the palate it is effortlessly vibrant, great acidity, firm yet silky tannin. Pure and elegant and with a solid core of fruit but not even a hint of anything overdone. Stunning. 98

1983 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Mouline France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
100 points
Our first perfect score and the yardstick that all wines will be judged against from now on.
Decanted and worshiped over 2 hours. Everything about this wine was perfect, from the open and expressive nose, to the vibrant and utterly balanced palate, the elegance and the long length. The tannin is firm yet silky and at 31 years old it still feels lively and kept developing. The last glass was the best and an experience that would be remembered . 100 easy

Requires decanting and this is still Young and took a good two hours to develop into the majestic wine this is. On open the wine was a touch overdone, as if it was too ripe with a lactic note on the nose that worried us. But with time it developed , the rich fruit stayed but evolved showing a beautiful roast meat side, smoky edge. On the palate post developing it was rich but balance, great structure and acidity, vibrant yet round tannin and this has all the markings of a future perfect wine and we think it will be at par with the 1983 La Mouline we tried side by side ( Papies 100) in 5yrs or so. Majestic wine.96-97 but with triple digit potential.

Dark in colour. The nose isomer from the start, good dark fruit side, light smoky . On the palate it started of tight with grippy tannin almost sharp but post like an hour it relaxed and evolved into a well round wine. Not Mr complexity but a very nice wine nonetheless . 92

2007 Domaine Trapet Latricières-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru
92 points
A young but not in anyway an austere wine, drinks very much like a good 2007 premiere rather than a Grand Cru though and it will need a few more years to develop that depth and complexity. Still at this stage, and with some decanting, it showed a nice face. Red fruits, strawberries dominate the nose and palate, light roast meat side, light roses at times. Drinks very nice ly now and will evolve into something very very good with time. 92 for now

N.V. Egly-Ouriet Champagne Premier Cru Les Vignes de Vrigny France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru

A pretty solid and round, rich 100% Pinot Meunier Blanc de Noirs. Interesting combination of the roundness and richness of the PM but also maintains a good structure and is qquite firm with good acidity. Shame we forgot to check discorgement date.. 91, A good but not a great champagne.

By the glass at The Kitchen Table in london.
In interesting pairing with white truffle and it actually worked very well! Felt a bit like a rhone white but with a touch more aromatic side, Good core of acidity, firm wine, light waxy feel but also a good core of fruit and minerality. A very nice surprise. 91

Brittle cork so we wonder about bottle variation here. Definiely not at par toe the last time we tried this ( 6 months ago and rated 94). Nothign bad with it but felt a bit unbalanced and with sharp edges. Felt at best like a 92 this time so we will not rate as we are not sure is representative given issues with cork...

1996 Château Margaux France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
95 points
A Class act albeit 10years away from peak. Very consistent with last time when we tried it about a year and a half ago (Papies 96)

Needs decanting, like 2 hours to develop and open up. Post that its just a recital of balance and elegance, very much a cab sauv wine ( 90% in this vintage) , white pepper, dark fruits, light floral. Very primary still. Great acidity here. This wine will reach its peak in 10 years we think and will stay there for a bit of time. 95 today but the future is for much higher.
