Introduction

Six of us gathered for an early week dinner with wine. The food from Don Saunders was outstanding as expected. The wines did their part to perform as well. The older wines were really where it was at tonight. Just great!

Flight 1 (12 notes)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Alliance Loire Crémant de Loire 49M Brut France, Loire Valley, Crémant de Loire

Ordered off the list at the Kenwood. Certainly a solid value and very drinkable. Apple, mild yeast, good acid and pretty crisp.
White
2011 Springfield Estate Chardonnay Méthode Ancienne South Africa, Breede River Valley, Robertson

Same bottle as Chablis28. This grew on me through the evening. I found it developed more depth and interest with some time. Definitely a full bodied wine with a buttery core, lemon, meyer lemon on the nose and palate, nicely integrated oak,. I will say the finish leaves me a bit wanting, but on the while this was very good 90+ to 91pts.
Red
1991 Georges Noellat Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Petits Monts France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Medium red color with a 7mm bricked margin. PNP, drank 1 glasses over 2 hours plus. Wow, what a great nose, perfumed and complex with tons of dried flowers, rose petals, dried earthiness, a touch of funk and fine leather on top of refined oak and a crazy exotic mix of spices. The palate is medium bodied with cherry, dried raspberry, dry forest floor, fine tannins and a minerally finish with hints of savory character. I thought this was in a very good place and quite enjoyable. 93+pts.

1999 St. Innocent Pinot Noir Shea Vineyard USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Yamhill-Carlton
90 points
medium dark red color. PNP, drank 1 glass over 2 hours. Very slow to open, tight and harsh initially, this eventually showed more depth and some finesse as one would expect. Dry earth, spice, dark berry, something unusual that I can't quite put my finger on too. The palate adds some dried flowers and black cheery to the mix. Maybe a bit of dill too. I like it, but it doesn;t quite live up to expectations for SI and Shea. The question I guess is where is this in the evolutionary stage. Initially it seemed tired, but it came around enough to almost think it needs more time to really show.

2009 Dujac Fils et Père Gevrey-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin

Medium dark red color. PNP, drank 1 glass over 2 hours. Very herbally and stem driven initially with some ripe fruit emerging, red currant, cherry. The palate is very similar, seems young, not as open as some '09's have been. I think this really needs a few years.
Red
1998 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Very dark red color with a hint of bricking. Drank 1 glass over 90 minutes. There's the requisite Pegau funk on the nose with garrigue, kirsch, some blue fruit and plenty of spice. The palate has plum, blackberry, funk, oak, spice, alcohol - mild, and lots of anise into the finish. This started a little slow, got a bit of steam, and then seemed to fall off. Not the best bottle, but still good.

1992 La Jota Cabernet Sauvignon Anniversary Release USA, California, Napa Valley, Howell Mountain

VEry dark red/purple color; drank 1+ glass over 90 minutes. This started off a bit slow, actually it seemed youthful, and picked up a tremendous amount of steam over 20 minutes or so. The nose just explodes and showed some old world character and depth along with classic mountain black and blue fruit of cassis and boysenberry. The palate has great acidity that bouys the nice blueberry, cassis, and black cherry fruits, with minerals and oak, tangy, earthy, long and well integrated. While this was youthful, it clearly is ready and performs so well. Loved it. 93+ to 94pts.

1989 Duckhorn Vineyards Merlot Napa Valley USA, California, Napa Valley
93 points
Very dark red color with no appreciable bricking. Decanted for about 2-2.5 hrs. Drank 1 glass over 1.5hrs. This had to be the shock of the night. I expected this to be a throw away wine, and it was anything but. Really in nice shape, this showed that California Merlot can age, and age well. Youthful, oak, blueberry, dank earth, blue and black fruits. The palate is now open and singing sweetly, blue fruit oth great structure, not even a hint of age here. Wow, what a nice treat and in a perfect spot. 92+ to 93pts.
Red
2004 Cakebread Cellars Dancing Bear Ranch USA, California, Napa Valley, Howell Mountain

Very dark purple/red color. Decanted for 2 hours. Drank 1 glass over an hour plus. This was probably the disappointment of the night...I have to say I expected more from this wine. I hadn't had it in some time, and generally it showed quite well. This was fine, but not really refined and truly interesting. Ripe dark red fruits, hints of heat, sharp, acid, and firm tannins seem to dominate here, rather than show some development or finesse.

White - Off-dry
1994 Karl Erbes Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Auslese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
93 points
This was really good, showing a ripe succulent fruit profile, pineapple, kiwi, tropical fruit, a great acid profile; citrus and orange on the palate follows the nervy depth that resonates. Long finish. I could drink more of this.
White - Off-dry
2003 Karthäuserhof Eitelsbacher Karthäuserhofberg Riesling Auslese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Light-medium gold color. Very good, quite ripe, more succulent fruits, not quite as acidic and needing more time in comparison to the '94.
White - Sweet/Dessert
1986 Château d'Yquem France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Just got a couple ml's of this sweet nectar. Thanks to Mark for sharing with our table. Showing the d'Yquem pedigree and class, spicy and deep with fantastic persistence. honey, apricot, peach, refined, long...just not enough!
