Introduction

2013 is very intriguing for Sauternes, but a red Bordeaux vintage that may not provide lots of consistent pleasure.

Flight 1 (26 notes)

Red
2013 Château Carbonnieux France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
Tasting, brief note. Good fruit and balance, while softer than most today. Nothing bitter here, no hollow core. Good.
Red
2013 Château Malartic-Lagravière France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
Tasting, brief note. Tannic and extremely firm. Tough to enjoy today or see an easy path to enjoyment.
Red
2013 Château Pape Clément France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
Tasting, brief note. Black fruit with rich flavors. Moderate weight with good balance. A favorite today, this is one of the few reds today that I can see meriting 90+ points.
Red
2013 Château Smith Haut Lafitte France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
Tasting, brief note. Good fruit that comes across as more complete than most today. Good balance, good overall, again with moderate depth and length.
Red
2013 Château Canon France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Tasting, brief note. Lots of spice and forest along with black fruit aromas. Same flavor profile, but very firm for that level of fruit. Good overall potential, but this needs time, and I would be slightly concerned over when/where it really reach harmony.
Red
2013 Château Troplong Mondot France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Tasting, brief note. Good fruit with some concentration to start. While i like the overall balance here vs many others today, this is moderate weight for the domaine and a lesser version than this wine in most vintages.
Red
2013 Château Villemaurine France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Tasting, brief note. Came across as pleasant and tasty, but very simple.
Red
2013 Château Clinet France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
Tasting, brief note. Another moderately weighted wine with ok depth, but slightly firm finish. At least this seems less hollow in the middle vs many other 2013s today.
Red
2013 Château Cantenac Brown France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
Tasting, brief note. Moderate weight but overall good balance with a hint of leather on the finish. Good enough for medium-term enjoyment.
Red
2013 Château Giscours France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
Tasting, brief note. Good spice driven start and better concentration that most of the 2013s today. Best for the medium-term, but definitely good.
Red
2013 Château Malescot St. Exupéry France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
Tasting, brief note. Black fruit with very good spice and moderate ripeness. Well balanced, hints of finesse and a pleasurable finish. One of the better wines for its value at the tasting.
Red
2013 Château Beychevelle France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
Tasting, brief note. Nice enough start, but slightly hollow in the middle with a finish that trails off. Good, but didn't meet the standard I'd expect from the Chateau.
Red
2013 Château Gruaud Larose France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
Tasting, brief note. Medium body, medium weight with black fruit, subtle slice and some emerging forest floor hints. Well balanced, so good enough.
Red
2013 Château Léoville Barton France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
Tasting, brief note. Good black fruit with slightly firm textures, but enough extract to retain balance. Cellar for a few years, 90 point potential here.
Red
2013 Château Léoville Poyferré France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
Tasting, brief note. Good fruit, but I found this a bit rugged and jagged. A few others I spoke with at the tasting liked this more than I did today, so I hope they are right and I am wrong.
Red
2013 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
Tasting, brief note. Lighter black fruit almost showing red cherry hints. Good weight and depth for the vintage. Firm in middle, so probably slightly more ageworthy than most. 87-88 point potential?
Red
2013 Château Grand-Puy Ducasse France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
Tasting, brief note. OK in general with moderate fruit, moderate depth, some green notes and slightly hollow middle.
Red
2013 Château Lynch-Bages France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
Tasting, brief note. Moderate fruit fruit with a little cigarbox. Startsforward, ends somewhat firm. Just OK, perhaps 86-87 point potential.
Red
2013 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
Tasting, brief note. Black fruit with spice hints. Better than average concentration for today's 2013s. Certainly better balance than most. 89-90 point potential.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2013 Château Coutet Barsac France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Barsac
Tasting, brief note. A top highlight today. Apricot, candied orange peel and some tropical hints. Very good length and intensity. Not the most sweet wine of the tasting, but with the acidity that gave it the best balance, showing restrain for now.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2013 Château Doisy-Daëne France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Barsac
Tasting, brief note. Stone fruit and nicely floral. Well balanced with moderate intensity. Very good.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2013 Château de Fargues France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
Tasting, brief note. Great intensity and depth on nose and palate. Slightly too tropical and sweet for just now, this is one of today's wines that will need the most cellar time.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2013 Château Guiraud France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
Tasting, brief note. Very approachable already with good balance. Not too heavy. Moderate stuffing. Good.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2013 Château de Rayne-Vigneau France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
Tasting, brief note. Very sweet start, tight and firm in middle and finish. Moderate intensity throughout. Good.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2013 Château Suduiraut France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
Tasting, brief note. Fat and lush with tropical fruit and candied citrus rind. Good depth and power. Perhaps lightly cloying at present, but that will soften with cellar time. very good potential.

White - Sweet/Dessert
2013 Château La Tour Blanche Sauternes France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
Tasting, brief note. I'm almost always a fan of this wine, enjoying its floral character, and 2013 was no exception. Good spice, floral start with apricot, candied nuts and maple syrup. Good length, very good 92-93 point potential.
