Introduction

Every participant brought a bottle. I opened a few.
I told I want to start with elegant and/or old and end with firm and/or young.
I asked who wanted to start and after that everybody poured his or her wine blind for the others.
We tasted the wines one at a time.

Flight 1 (13 notes)

White - Sparkling
2005 Veuve Émille Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Brut France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
90 points
In the bouquet brioche, apple, lemon and some reductive impressions. Same on the palate, green apples, melon, grapefruit, almonds, good minerals and a slight touch of sweetness. Ok bubble.
Red
2004 Domaine Maillard Père & Fils Aloxe-Corton 1er Cru Les Grandes Lolières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Aloxe-Corton 1er Cru
89 points
In the bouquet red berry fruits and pleasant autumn impressions and mushrooms. Same on the palate, earthy, leather, licorice, friendly acidity and slightly drying tannin. Good balance between acidity and sweetness and a good length. Nice wine.
Red
2009 Paul Blanck Pinot Noir Cuvée F France, Alsace
86 points
The bouquet is still a bit locked, but shows red fruits and some licorice. On the palate Harsh cherries, earthy impressions, sticky tannin, some pepper, mild acidity. Overall light bodied and not really impressive. 86-
Red
2007 Clos Saint Jean Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
91 points
Blood garnet red color. In the bouquet cherries, dark berry fruits and herbs and spices. On the palate a sweet start, sweet spices, some earthiness, ripe red and dark berry fruits, some minerals, vanilla, candy and mild tannin. This might not be your thing because the wine is very modern with a lot of sweetness, but overall there is good complexity and the acidity and tannin in good harmony with the sweetness. An easy drinker, but certainly a good quality and lovely and friendly wine. Seems to be completely ready now and no real hurry.

2006 Famille Brunier Châteauneuf-du-Pape Domaine La Roquète France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
90 points
Expressive bouquet with juicy red and ripe red berry fruits. Same on the palate with a lot of sweet licorice, spiciness, beautiful acidity and buttery soft tannin. Although the sweetness dominates this is a beautiful, juicy and harmonious wine.
Red
2005 Domaine du Vieux Lazaret Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Exceptionnelle France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
92 points
A very expressive bouquet with at first a little barnyard followed by ripe fruits juice, some smoke, herbs and spices and licorice. On the palate mainly ripe red berry fruits, minerals, licorice, herbs and spices, some chocolate, a lot of sweetness and also good fresh acidity and round tannin with still a good bite. Full bodied and very enjoyable wine with good freshness and a long finish.

2009 Domaine Tempier Bandol France, Provence, Bandol
90 points
Beautiful bouquet with ripe and lush red berry fruits. On the palate a slightly sweet start with ripe and juicy fruits, pleasant vanilla from the oak, good acidity and round tannin which is also slightly sticky. A beautiful and firm wine which is in its early maturity stage now. Possibly even a little more complete in 2017, but already a great pleasure.

2007 Domaine Bois de Boursan Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée des Félix France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
92 points
The bouquet shows ripe red and dark berry fruits and garrigue and beautiful oak. Same on the palate. Good acidity and completely melted tannin. Although no hurry at all, the wine is completely ready now.
Red
2000 Château Prieuré-Lichine France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
91 points
In the bouquet and on the palate in this stage a classical Bordeaux. In the bouquet cassis and the Margaux oaky perfume, some cedar and tobacco as well as minerals. On the palate juicy cassis, some bell pepper, good acidity and still slightly sticky tannin with still a firm bite. I have the impression the wine )still' is in a somewhat locked stage and needs another few years of ageing to show more finesse. Possibly wise to wait until 2017 or 18. I have a few more, so there will be a follow up on this one.

1994 Pauillac de Latour France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
89 points
Beautiful and tertiary bouquet with tea, earth and licorice. On the palate tobacco, leather, spiciness, some red fruits, good acidity, soft and melted but still alive tannin. A beautiful classical and mature Bordeaux.
Red
2006 Hentley Farm Shiraz The Beast Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
94 points
Enormously concentrated bouquet with a lot of herbs and spices as well as ripe forest fruits of all kinds. On the palate extremely concentrated with dark forest fruits, some ripe red berry fruits as well, sweet spices, Eucalyptus and sweet oak. Minerals as well. Good fresh acidity and round tannin with a soft bite. With 15.5% ABV this should easily keep until 2020. A blockbuster which has finesse, elegance and complexity. 93-94 for tonight.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2003 Château La Tour Blanche Sauternes France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
94 points
Beautiful and concentrated wine. Precisely what you expect of a Sauternes. In the bouquet loads of apricots, polishing wax, orange peel and tangerine. Same on the palate, butter candy and concentrated honey as well. A really beautiful wine with a great balance between the enormous sweetness and the acidity. Ready now, but of course this can last for one or two decades as well. A great pleasure. 93 – 94.
