Introduction

We knew the theme, but all wines were tasted fully blind.

Flight 1 (2 notes)

Red
1994 Château Terrey-Gros-Cailloux France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
Brown rim. In the bouquet rust, tobacco, lovage, tea, organic flavors and still some red berries. On the palate chocolate, earth and a lot of acidity. This wine is several years past its prime.
Red
1996 Château Talbot Connétable de Talbot France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
Brown. In the bouquet tobacco, autumn forest floor, chocolate and in the distance still some dark berries. On the palate the wine is dusty and not completely fresh. No score.

Flight 2 (2 notes)

Red
2000 Château Les Trois Croix France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Fronsac
88 points
In the bouquet dark berries, licorice and graphite. On the palate red and dark berries, herbs, sweet spices, firm acidity and soft tannin. This medium bodied wine is completely ready now and a pleasure.
Red
2005 Château Vrai Canon Bouché France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Canon-Fronsac
This must be a seriously mistreated bottle. Already far past its peak with lovage, sweet spices, chocolate and coffee. Not any fruits, only tertiary flavors.

Flight 3 (2 notes)

Red
2001 Château Brillette France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Moulis en Médoc
87 points
In the bouquet coffee, sweet spices, chocolate, leather, tea and nutmeg. On the palate still some dark forest fruits, herbs, some pepper, chocolate, firm acidity and soft tannin. Some length. This wine has been in a shop since release and not under controlled conditions, so it is more developed than it should be. Nevertheless still a pleasure.
Red
2007 Château Chasse-Spleen France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Moulis en Médoc
87 points
Bouquet with creamy dark berries, caramel and some smoke. On the palate creamy red and dark berries, chocolate, a bit dusty, medium plus acidity and slightly sticky tannin. Not a bad wine, but disappointing for Chasse Spleen. Early maturity stage now. Maybe a few more years of bottle ageing will help.

Flight 4 (2 notes)

Red
2008 L'Heritage de Chasse-Spleen France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc
86 points
Garnet rim. In the bouquet red berries and sweet spices. On the palate dark berries, some earth, firm acidity and round tannin with some bite. Some bitterness in the medium long finish. Overall an ok wine and ready now. No real hurry.
Red
2010 L'Heritage de Chasse-Spleen France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc
87 points
In the bouquet creamy red and dark forest fruits. Same on the palate, some chocolate, good acidity and round, slightly sticky tannin and soft bitterness in the finish. In its young maturity stage now. Might improve a bit with 2+ years of ageing.

Flight 5 (2 notes)

Red
2002 Château Picard France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
Mature bouquet with lovage, tea, coffee, chocolate leather and some salty impressions. The same tertiary impressions on the palate. Some minerals as well. Nevertheless good acidity and soft tannin. Still drinkable, but in fact this bottle is a bit too old. No score.
Red
2004 Château Haut-Beauséjour France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
88 points
Beautiful bouquet with dark forest fruits, sweet spices, smoke, some luxurious oak, toast, forest floor and mushrooms. On the palate dark berries, chocolate, sweet spices like cinnamon, toast and coffee. This wine is at its perfect peak now and a great pleasure to drink.

Flight 6 (2 notes)

Red
2009 Château Preuillac France, Bordeaux, Médoc
89 points
Beautiful bouquet with dark forest fruits like blackberries and blackcurrants, cedar, graphite and chocolate. The same impressions on the palate, sweet spices, a touch of sweetness, beautifully fresh acidity and good tannin. Good concentration and length. A really nice surprise. Young maturity stage now and no problem cellaring this until 2020+.
Red
2009 Château Preuillac Emotion France, Bordeaux, Médoc
90 points
The special cuvee of Preuillac and only produced in the best vintages. Beautiful bouquet with ripe dark forest fruits, licorice and beautiful oak. On the palate the same impressions. Beautiful acidity and round tannin with a good bite. Beautiful and concentrated wine. Young maturity stage now and no problem cellaring this until into the early 2020’s.

Flight 7 (2 notes)

Red
2009 Lacoste Borie France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
90 points
The youthful bouquet is still creamy and lactic with dark berries and licorice. On the palate beautifully ripe berry fruits, graphite and a little herbaceous. Good acidity and round tannin. Early maturity stage now and will probably improve a bit with some additional cellaring. 2019 – 2021+?

Red
2010 Lacoste Borie France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
90 points
In the complex bouquet dark forest fruits, spices, anise, rosemary and beautiful oak. On the palate dark berries, herbs and spices, ink, good acidity and round but powerful tannin. Overall a harmonious wine with a very good future. At this moment approachable, but still very youthful. Probably wise to wait until 2020 – 2023+ I scored the wine 90+ for tonight.

Flight 8 (1 note)

White - Sweet/Dessert
2001 Château Vari Monbazillac Réserve du Château France, Southwest France, Dordogne, Monbazillac
86 points
In the bouquet flowers, apricots and tangerine. On the palate sweet apricots and honey. Pleasant acidity and some bitterness. Overall an elegant sweet wine.
