Flight 1 - Domaine Prieuré Roch (Nuits St. Georges) (4 notes)

Tasting in the cafe just above the domaine cellars. My first visit. With Yannick Champ, co-director.

Red
2014 Domaine Prieuré Roch Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
Tasting upstairs from the domaine. Black fruit with perfumed spice aromas. Same flavors profile but with less intensity. Moderate weight and depth. Slightly sweet finish. Very good, probably best on the young side.

One of three cuvees made from Clos des Corvées, this is not the tete de cuvee and excludes the young vines.
Red
2013 Domaine Prieuré Roch Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Le Clos des Corvées France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
Tasting upstairs from the domaine. This is the tete de cuvee from the vineyard. Black berry aromas and flavors with great spice and floral charm. Moderate weight and length. Alluring start, more restrained finish. Good already now.
Red
2010 Domaine Prieuré Roch Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
Tasting upstairs from the domaine. From the very special plot in Suchots that Domaine Prieuré Roch leases. On the Echezeaux side adjacent to DRC. Red and black berry with baking spice. Moderate weight, very good length. Hints of more advancement that the typical 2010 at this age.

2001 Domaine Prieuré Roch Chambertin-Clos de Bèze mise "Pure" France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru
Tasting upstairs from the domaine. This "Pure" cuvee represents a barrel selection that was then bottled barrel-by-barrel with the addition of no sulfur. Fully mature black fruit with lots of baking and savory spice. Very good concentration. At a very good place right now, but I wouldn't expect to be as thrilled if this bottle had left Burgundy and gone through the travails of transportation.

Flight 2 - Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg (Vosne-Romanee) (10 notes)

Always a favorite stop. Wonderful to taste both 2014s and 2015s. With Marie-Christine.

Red
2014 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Vosne-Romanée France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée
Tasting at the domaine. Bright red Pinot fruit aromas and flavors with floral notes upfront, spice in background. Very good balance now, slightly firm and powerful finish. To be bottled next week. 25% new oak. Slightly chaptalized. VG for its level.
Red
2014 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Chaignots France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
Tasting at the domaine. Bottled one month ago, like most of the cuvees. Black and red cherry aromas and flavors. Moderate savory spice. 50% new oak (vs typical 40% because of shortage of 2012 barrels to reuse). Starts forward and fun, finishes with more firmness and density. VG for its level.
Red
2014 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Feusselottes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
Tasting at the domaine. 50% new oak. Bright red cherry and berries on nose and palate with very elegant structure and a minerally finish that's very Chambolle. Persistent. VG+ for its level.
Red
2014 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Echezeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
Tasting at the domaine. 60% new oak. Bright red throughout with good concentration. Background spice. Good length. VG for its level.
Red
2014 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Ruchottes-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru
Tasting at the domaine. Black and red cherry coming across as brighter than usual for the Ruchottes. Power, but with elegant tannins. Savory herbs and spice throughout. Very long, very persistent. VG+, this is a very successful Ruchottes.
Red
2014 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Clos Vougeot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
Tasting at the domaine. Once again, no surprise, my fav of the lineup. Red and black fruit with subtle brown spice. Power, depth and nuance already coming through. Wonderfully elegant textures. Excellent.
Red
2015 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Chaignots France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
Barrel tasting at the domaine. Rich and ripe with an opulent and almost jammy aromatic start. Same fun fruit continues onto the palate, but with more restraint and balance. Not yet fully integrated (no hurry), this has wonderful raw materials that are just starting to come together.
Red
2015 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Echezeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
Barrel tasting at the domaine, we tasted a mini-assemblage of two barrels. Clearly lots of juicy red fruit, somewhat soft and rounded to start, dense and concentrated middle to finish. Very elegant once again, a top performance for this wine. VG+ for its level.
Red
2015 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Ruchottes-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru
Barrel tasting at the domaine, tasted from a new oak barrel. All black fruit with lots of roast beef and game character. Very concentrated, while brightened and energized by finessed textures and a minerally finish. Excellent potential here.
Red
2015 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Clos Vougeot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
Barrel tasting at the domaine, also from a new oak barrel. Black and red cherry with superb savory spice. Very concentrated, with a roast meat power and character I really liked. Very long, expressive finish. An excellent wine in the making.

Flight 3 - David Duband (Chevannes - Burgundy) (21 notes)

Tasting today with David Duband, we had the good fortune of being there at the same time as Francois Feuillet, who owns most/all of the vineyards from which David makes wine. All these notes are listed as Duband but some wines might only be under the Domaine Francois Feuillet label, and others might be under both. If under both, the wines are obviously identical other than the label.

Generally 60% whole cluster for Village level wines, then 75-80% for Premier and Grand Cru. Farming is all organic, with some consideration underway for biodynamic.

Red
2014 David Duband Morey St. Denis France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis
Tasted at the domaine. Red cherry aromas and flavors, nicely bright and accessible on nose, more firm and tight on palate. Good weight for its level. Needs a few years in cellar.
Red
2014 David Duband Vosne-Romanée France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée
89 points
Tasting at the domaine. Brighter red cherry vs MSD just tasted. Well balanced and integrated with good textured and an overall elegance with Vosne charm. From Barreaux (top of slope) and Ormes (bottom of slope on the north of the village). Very good for its level now, but better in a few years.
Red
2014 David Duband Morey St. Denis 1er Cru Clos Sorbé France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru
Tasted at the domaine. Bright red cherry aromas, then more backward, firm flavors. Red cherry throughout with subtle spice and moderate weight and an early hint of earth starting to emerge. Like most of the lineup this emphasizes elegance and finesse over power. Needs a few years in the cellar.
Red
2014 David Duband Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Aux Thorey France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
Tasting at the domaine. Equal representation of black and red cherry comes across as nicely spiced, and even better textured. Good length. Very good combination of the Vosne and NSG characters I'd want from this vineyard.Could be a very good value wine.
Red
2014 David Duband Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Pruliers France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
Tasted at the domaine. Polished black fruit that comes across as very well textured, balanced and surprisingly accessible for NSG 1er Cru from the central heart of the appellation. Very good already, with upside from here.
Red
2014 David Duband Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Sentiers France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
Tasting at the domaine. Great aromas, but less accessible flavors, coming across as austere and firm on palate today, but with serious density. As non-modern as red Burgundy can be these days. Very good potential, but only for those with patience, 2025 forward.
Red
2014 David Duband Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Procès France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
Tasting at the domaine. Clear reduction to start, which dissipated with aeration. Black and red cherry. Moderate weight, good balance. Good for its level for the medium-term.

Red
2014 David Duband Echezeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
Tasting at the domaine. Bright red cherry and berry with subtle baking spice. Moderate weight, good length, expanding finish. Textures are once again the star for now, as with many of the wines in the lineup. Lighter styled Echezeaux, but that is also the Duband style, which is not for those seeking full throttle Pinot Noir. My 2nd favorite of the 2014s tasted today, just behind Chambertin. 91-93 point potential.
Red
2014 David Duband Clos de la Roche France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru
Tasting at the domaine. Seemingly the most floral of the 2014s. Moderate concentration, moderate weight, this has pretty fruit but also seems to show less nuanced or complex flavors vs most of the other 2014 Grand Cru cuvees. clearly needing time in the cellar, perhaps this is just the most shut down of the lineup.
Red
2014 David Duband Charmes-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru
Tasting at the domaine. From Mazoyeres-Chambertin. Black fruit with dense, meaty character. Perhaps not classically Gevrey with its more elegant style and moderate power, but this is very well crafted and styled. Lengthy and nuanced, this requires attention to really enjoy. 92-93 point potential.

2014 David Duband Latricières-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru
Tasting at the domaine. Bought 1/3 of the prior Louis Remy holdings here and in Chambertin in 2009. Black and red cherry with savory spice and more firm textures. also elegantly styled, but less forward charm coming through vs the rest of the Grand Cru lineup. Intriguing, but in need of the most cellar time.
Red
2014 David Duband Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru
Tasting at the domaine. Bought 1/3 of the prior Louis Remy holdings here and in Latricieres-Chambertin in 2009. Sophisticated black cherry and berry aromas with the scent of roasted prime rib. Similar flavors with silky tannins, elegant textures and nuanced character. Not a powerhouse Chambertin, but a charmer in the making . 92-94 point potential here. Patience required.
Red
2013 David Duband Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Sentiers France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
Tasting at the domaine. Slightly reduced to start, so the red cherry comes across clearly, but not fully accessible to start. A few minutes of aeration in glass help, resulting in a moderate, softer finish. Chambolle minerality and textures oddly didn't show through at first, but also emerged with aeration. This will need time in the cellar.
Red
2013 David Duband Echezeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
92 points
Tasted at the domaine. Very old vines. Bright red fruit with dried herbs and savory spice. Slightly leaner fruit flavors vs aromas, but with great textural nuance. There is considerable complexity and charm here that will require close to a decade to really unfold, but this has very intriguing 92-93 point potential.
Red
2013 David Duband Latricières-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru
Tasting at the domaine. Black and red cherry again in a lighter, more elegant style, along with some animale hints at the end. Less concentration vs the 2014,
Red
2015 David Duband Morey St. Denis 1er Cru Clos Sorbé France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru
Barrel tasting at the domaine. This is a big step up for me from the 2014. Black and red cherry with wonderful spice here. This maintains Duband's elegant style with the great concentration of the vintage, giving a meaty, powerful character, while still retaining the domaine's weightless textures. Very good+ potential, 91-92 points.
Red
2015 David Duband Echezeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
Barrel tasting at the domaine. Slightly reductive start. Dense red fruit with power and concentration. Probably better nuanced and complex spice vs all the young Duband wine tasted today, 2013-2015. Very good grand Cru potential here, 92-95 points.
Red
2011 David Duband Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Aux Combottes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
Baarrel tasting at the domaine. Black and red cherry with very good concentration. There is an impressive lift coming from a burst of energy middle-to-finish. another wine with exciting potential.
Red
2015 David Duband Latricières-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru
Barrel tasting t the domaine. Slightly reduced to start. Black fruit only here with notes of smoked meat and roasted meat. Firm and nicely concentrated, this is the one 2015 i found slightly backward today, but certainly good for its level.
Red
2007 David Duband Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Sentiers France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
89 points
Popped and poured at the domaine. Tart red cherry and berry with earth, leather and roasted meat notes. Very elegantly styled with savory spice throughout. Meatiness made me think this showed more Morey or even Gevrey character than Chambolle, but Duband's signature softness and nuance clearly come through.
Red
2015 David Duband Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru
Barrel tasting at the domaine. I have no complaint that Francois Feuillet asked to continue the tasting for one final wine. Black cherry and plum with wonderful ripeness and power, plus classic Gevrey meaty notes. the overall concentration is so finely balanced with Duband's telltale textural elegance that i thin this will ultimately emerge as the finest wine of today's tasting. Excellent 93-96 point potential.
