Flight 1 (9 notes)

Red
1994 Abreu Cabernet Sauvignon Madrona Ranch USA, California, Napa Valley
94 points
Dark opaque core with garnet rim; Bordeaux nose with cigar, tobacco, weedy, stones, gravel, earth, black currant, rich darker fruit, taut, green pepper, slight funk, good structure, in the secondary/tertiary, mushroom, some bitter chocolate, slight Bretty leather and sweaty animal note adds nice complexity rather than taking hold of the wine, very good balance, violets on the finish, slight medicinal licorice finish; very good, great vintage; fooled most as Bordeaux.
Red
2004 Albino Rocca Barbaresco Vigneto Brich Ronchi Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
92 points
Sediment, deep crimson core, lighter rim; rose, dried cherry, cedar, slight cinnamon, licorice, menthol, sandalwood, very fine mouth filling tannin, long classic Italian finish; called '04 Il Poggione as the tannins were firm and Nebbiolo like but color didn't suggest Nebbiolo; very nice.

Red
2009 La Pousse d'Or Volnay 1er Cru Clos d'Audignac France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
93 points
Darker ruby, paler rim; darker fruit on nose, slightly reduced, oak, red apple skin mixed with violets, roses, and dark cherry, toasty oak, still very young, really thought this was Cote du Nuits; called '12 Gevrey; happy to see this still young and ageing gracefully; very good.
Red
2000 Tardieu-Laurent Hermitage France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
Dull maroon, cloudy core; sour nose, olives, cranberry, tapenade, sour plum, leather, Band-Aid; very sour palate, many turned off by the acid but I thought this was on the edge but not too acidic, granite, red fruit, lots of lift; older Cote Rotie?
Red
2010 San Felice Vigorello Toscana IGT Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
Opaque core with reddish violet rim; peanut shells, nutty, darker fruit, oak, leather, young with some reduction; dark cherry, leather, some grip, fine grainy tannin, fuller richer ripe fruit, good acid, darker fruit, still very young and compact; was in an elegant French oaked Rioja.
Red
2012 Domaine Billard-Gonnet Pommard 1er Cru Les Chaponnières Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru
Dark ruby, clarity, maroon rim; bright youthful nose, tart berry, sweet, floral, piercing, fine grip, good weight, mineral, very focused, cuts swath right down the middle of the palate, young though still very tasty; mine, people on Pommard and vintage- proper.
Red
2008 Castello dei Rampolla Sammarco Toscana IGT Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
Dark core with garnet rim; cocoa powder, green pepper, spicy, black tea, currants, nice tannins, interesting; solid; was on Mt. Eden Cab due to classic styling with new oak spice, from limited experience this was the first wine from this producer that I've enjoyed.
Red
2007 Fuligni Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
See through crimson with some orange in the rim; beautiful orange, orange and cherry mix, roses, leather, cedar, silky palate, sappy mid palate, Burgundian tannin, ripe fruit; called '07 Fuligni...took a while but finally got one.

Red
1995 Beringer Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve USA, California, Napa Valley
Dark core, opaque, with garnet rim; green pepper, black pepper, dark fruit, sweet chocolate, texture suggests new oak, sappier on the palate, some grain, too sweet to be Bordeaux, compost, wet earth, boxwood, lots of red currants, sweet chocolate covered cherry, generous and very good; thought this was valley fruit, called '94 Dunn Napa; surprised no American oak, really well done.

Closing

Very nice tasting with the Abreu as clear winner, and Pousse d'Or and Fuligni tying for #2 though I felt the Pousse was #2 and Albino Rocca #3.
