Flight 1 (4 notes)

Red
2008 Soter Pinot Noir Mineral Springs Ranch USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Yamhill-Carlton
91 points
Group rank 3 out of 12. Mine 6 out of 12.
I usually like Soter, and am not surprised by the showing. Tasted young. darker berries. plums. very nice acidity. keeps riper fruit in check. riper side of pinot. long finish. but in balance.
Red
2009 Lucien Crochet Sancerre Rouge Cuvée Prestige France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre Rouge
91 points
group rank 1 out of 12. mine is 5 out of 12.
shy nose, but with swirling very pretty rasberry. palate has dried cherries nad floral elements.decent. wanting more complexity. but still liking it for what it is.
Red
2010 Ziereisen Schulen Germany, Baden
92 points
Group rank 6 out of 12. Mine 3 out of 12.
rich berry and cherry nose. rounder. fleshier. finish has more funk. mushrooms. noise doesn't match palate. couldn't decide if this was new or old world. but I liked the balance of funk and fruit.
Red
2005 Alain Hudelot-Noëllat Vosne-Romanée France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée
group rank 2 out of 12. mine 7 out of 12.
mineral, earthy, mushrooms, underbrush, has dried cherry note that are nice. tastes like village wine. proper, but not a lot of oomph for me.

Flight 2 (4 notes)

Red
2005 Domaine / Maison Vincent Girardin Clos Vougeot Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
87 points
group rank 4 out of 12. mine 11 out of 12.
funky poopy nose. off putting to me.very earthy, touch of dirt, little fruit. opened up a bit more on 2nd taste but the smell put me off. Other liked it much more. They must like poop.
Red
2009 Domaine Denis Bachelet Côte de Nuits Villages France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Côte de Nuits Villages
flawed
flawed bottle or just teribbly wierd. smelled like peanut butter. with air got worse and covered any fruit. last of 12 for group and for me.
Red
2014 Calabretta Pinot Nero Etna Italy, Sicily, Etna DOC
87 points
Group rank 7 out of 12. mine 9 out of 12.
strong acidity. darker berries. pleasant. decent finish. but not overly complex.
Red
2014 Ata Rangi Pinot Noir New Zealand, North Island, Wairarapa, Martinborough
88 points
Group rank 10 out of 12. Mine 8 out of 12.
nice balance and fruit with acidity. Just not that exciting.

Flight 3 (4 notes)

Red
2007 Domaine Henri Gouges Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Vaucrains France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
92 points
Group 9 out of 12. Mine 2 out of 12.
funk on nose, but melded perfectly and elegantly with acids and earth tones. dried cherry and floral elements. I liked this a lot. (after reveal not surprised - I do love Gouges.
Red
2010 Mount Eden Vineyards Pinot Noir Domaine Eden USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains
93 points
Group rank 5 out of 12. Mine 1 out of 12.
Go figure. The less heralded Eden is my favorite among some much more heralded wines. In the end I tend to like delineated flavors. lovely cherry notes and elegant, not overdone. Maybe I was just craving fruit. But blind tastings don't lie.
Red
2005 Domaine Serene Pinot Noir Evenstad Reserve USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
84 points
Group Rank 11 out of 12. Mine 10 out of 12.
Not surprised on reveal. I have never liked these wines. smells of alcohol. not delicate. new world nose all the way (in a bad way). it does have some balance and some redeeming cherry fruit.
Red
2007 Talley Vineyards Pinot Noir Stone Corral Vineyard USA, California, Central Coast, Edna Valley
92 points
Group rank 8 out of 12. Mine 4 out of 12.
Pretty. finishes long. cherry, darker berries. ripe fruit, but tasty and balanced. medium palate. clean and pure.
