Flight 1 (23 notes)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Yellowglen Pinot Noir Chardonnay Australia
flawed
Blind. Bought around 1992. Golden colour. Yeast and earth, maybe a little musty but it's hard to tell. Rather sweet on the palate, has that same mustiness on the palate, but it is otherwise holding up surprisingly well.
White - Sparkling
1981 Lanson Champagne Brut Vintage Collection France, Champagne
90 points
Dark golden colour. Celery, marzipan, spice and earthy chocolate notes on the nose. Caramel and some light oxidative flavours on the palate, there is some zingy acidity sticking around and this has good length. Fully developed but has plenty of interest and is fun to drink.
White - Sparkling
2014 Vouette et Sorbée Champagne Textures France, Champagne
91 points
D/g 18/11/2016. Pear, apple, white and red floral notes - a pretty nose. High in acidity, very fresh and crisp, with bright fruit. Give it a couple of years to settle and I think it'll be very good.
White - Sparkling
2011 Benoît Lahaye Champagne Grand Cru Brut Millésimé France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
88 points
Herb, apple, slate and cherry. Quite tart on the palate with a jolt of acidity. A little shallow on fruit depth at the moment, perhaps more time will help this soften a little and provide more enjoyment.
White
2015 Antoine Sanzay Saumur Les Salles Martin France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Saumur
90 points
Slate, lemon, pear and white floral notes. Rich and textured on the palate with a good zing of acidity to cut through. I like how much flavour this has, has good depth as well. Would like to try again in 5 years to see how it develops.
White
2012 Penfolds Chardonnay Yattarna Bin 144 Australia, South Australia
93 points
Punchy aromatics - spice, peach, toast, lime, mineral and apple. Plenty of drive on the palate, while it is ripe it has excellent focus. Lovely length. Impeccably made, there isn't really anything not to like here.
White
2016 Vasse Felix Chardonnay Heytesbury Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River
92 points
Pineapple, lemon and some smoky notes. Good fruit brightness, with medium-good depth, the fruit has a certain lean profile that I like. Good length and verve about it.

2013 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault Clos de la Barre France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault

Diam 30. Smoke, lemon, musky florals, spice and pear. Beautiful detail on the palate, great texture and depth to the fruit. Fantastic length and balance. Delightful.
White
2015 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Meursault 1er Cru Charmes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

Chalk, soap, orange and apple. Powerful fruit on the palate, intense but still has layers of flavour to give it dimension. Great mix of power and precision. Delicious stuff.
White
2016 Clonakilla Viognier Australia, New South Wales, Southern New South Wales, Canberra District

Sherbert, musk and apple. Medium depth and a little short on length. Not particularly exciting.
Red
2005 Domaine Fourrier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Gruenchers Vieille Vigne France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
91 points
Blind. Strawberry, blackcurrant, ash, darker florals and berries. Good grip and acidity, a firm line of structure sitting behind the rich fruit. Good stuff, but more time would certainly help it build some complexity.
Red
2005 Domaine Epis Pinot Noir Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Macedon Ranges
90 points
Blind. Bubblegum, cherry and some stalky herbal elements coming into play. Very good acidity is helping to prop this up, good length. I've never really been a big fan of the Epis wines, and while this was good, I'm still not convinced.
Red
2004 Bindi Pinot Noir Block 5 Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Macedon Ranges
90 points
Blind. Earthy undergrowth, cherry, raspberry, rhubarb and some spice. Moderate intensity on the palate, still showing a little brightness but I feel like now is the right time to drink these before the fruit drops any further.
Red
1999 Dominique Laurent Echezeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
88 points
Cedar, chocolate, leather and spice. Resolved on the palate, pretty good flow, though the fruit depth isn't really up to the classification. Medium length. Good but not more than that.
Red
1999 Chateau Musar Lebanon, Bekaa Valley
92 points
Spice, cherry, herb, some meatiness and light VA lift. Sweet and bright on the palate, very fresh but also has plenty of grip. Youthful fruit and tannins for now, the complexity should definitely come with time. The wine was served blind to others and nobody thought this was anywhere close to 1999. Will save my other bottle for 10+ years if I can!

2001 Château Gruaud Larose France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
91 points
Cedar, spice, blackcurrant, herb, earth - very nice classic Bordeaux profile. Drinking well now, with a nice savoury element through the palate. Will age further but probably not over the very long term.
Red
2009 La Mondotte France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
93 points
Very fleshy - raspberry, blackcurrant, redcurrant, ash and tobacco. The palate has the same bold and exaggerated fruit profile, intense and punchy sweetness. It has all the right components to age well, it just feels like it needs 20 years to come together properly.
Red
2008 BOND Vecina USA, California, Napa Valley

Licorice, blueberry, smoke, cherry and redcurrant on the nose. The palate is powerful but seamless, beautifully composed fruit with sweetness but plenty of texture and depth. Superb length, this is really delicious.

2016 Tonic Wines Mataro Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley

Violets, raspberry, spice and talc with a little peppery spice note. A nice lithe profile on the palate, with the fruit retaining good purity and a really pleasant flow. Good stuff.
Red
2016 Tonic Wines Grenache Australia, South Australia, Mount Lofty Ranges, Clare Valley
90 points
Graphite, slate, cherry and roses. Very light in style, with tight red fruits and good acidity. Pretty tasty, though not overly deep.
Red
2010 Artadi Rioja Valdegines Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alavesa, Rioja
90 points
Tar, tobacco, graphite and slate aromas. A step up in ripeness on the palate but there are some nice savoury elements as well to give it some interest. Has plenty of potential to improve, especially if the fruit folds back into the structure a little more.
Red
2010 Le Vieux Donjon Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
90 points
Cherry, tar, spice, earth and smoky notes. The ripeness of the fruit does show through a bit with a little alcohol warmth as well. Pretty approachable now given the sweet edges, but will probably improve if it is given another 5-6 years.

2008 Château Rayas Côtes du Rhône Château de Fonsalette Reserve France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône
92 points
Herbs, stalk, roses, cherry and redcurrant on the nose. Really light on its feed, with delicate fruit and fine tannins. A really nice herbal streak across the very good length of the wine. Full of interest, as one would expect from this producer.
