Flight 1 (7 notes)

White
1997 Chateau Musar Blanc Lebanon, Bekaa Valley
92 points
92/100

First wine of the night is rather orange in color, not oxidized, but already a notch oxidative, with ripe slightly rotten apricots at the back. Good acidity supports a much younger palate.

A pleasurable oldie.

NR/100

Deep amber color meets signature nose of Jerez Fino. No, I ain’t drinking this one.

Fresh and yet somewhat lush white Musar 2005. Dried mango and pineapple in dominance, acidity firmly supports its lively palate.

My call it is at peak now, but has stamina to go on for years. Very good.

2006 Chateau Musar Blanc Lebanon, Bekaa Valley
89 points
89/100

Dark amber color, bouquet has a thin oxidative note, dried apricots, honey. Somewhat lower than expected acidity first, but eventually it comes around.

A worse experience than another 2006 I tried a couple of months ago. A suboptimal bottle for sure, but not too bad to suggest NR.

Best Musar of the night.

Pale straw, deep light yellow color. Typical aromas of rich and succulent mango, melon and lemon candies are offset by its bright, unrestrained fresh acidity, often found in partially green tomatoes just about to ripen.

Great wine with quite a few years to go, probably still not at peak.

2005 Y de Yquem France, Bordeaux
94 points
94/100. BENCHMARK WHITE BORDEAUX

Shiny golden. Amazing bouquet of yellow apricot sweetness, bordering on the rot, with burnt sugar lollipop candies. Palate is textured and very sleek, immaculately balanced, and not falling into a trap of being halfway Sauternes.

Y de Château d’Yquem (predictably) proved to be a more complex juice than Château Musar Blanc. Hooray to Bordeaux, but nonetheless hooray to Lebanon!

White - Sweet/Dessert
1990 Château d'Yquem France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
96 points
95+/100

Yquem is always Yquem.

This 1990 oldie possesses rich bouquet of buckwheat honey and apricot jam. Round and well-polished, medium-to-full weight, sugar is subtle, restrained, well-integrated in its beautiful palate. Perfect with dessert.

Man, I love whatever Château d’Yquem does - yet, their Sauternes is so unique, so rich and genuine, that the remaining half a glass of Y white Bordeaux 2005 was impossible to drink after one sip of Sauternes.
