Flight 1 (21 notes)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Egly-Ouriet Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Noirs Les Crayères France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
92 points
Disgorged May 2017. Toast, smoke, chalk and strawberry. Good richness on the palate, full and long with plenty of intensity. Maintains a layered, complex element that helps give this youthful interest.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Jérôme Prévost Champagne La Closerie Extra Brut "Climax" Les Beguines France, Champagne
91 points
Labelled LC15 but it is actually 2012 as the base. Lemon and herb, earth and some smokey elements. Super fresh and clean on the palate with a rush of acidity and light but pure mineral based fruit. Would be interesting to see it in 4-5 years I think.
White
2014 Tertini Wines Riesling Australia, New South Wales, South Coast, Southern Highlands
88 points
Blind. Toast and wax, melon and peach with some light herbs. Quite rounded, with off-dry sweetness and some good intensity. Medium length. Drinking well now.
White
2016 Helm Riesling Premium Australia, New South Wales, Southern New South Wales, Canberra District
90 points
White florals, lemon, apple and musk. Good fruit body, with a streak of acidity cutting through well. I think this will show some more interest if it gets some time to develop.
White
2017 Pewsey Vale Vineyard Riesling 1961 Block Eden Valley Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Eden Valley
92 points
Steely, lemon rind, passionfruit and lime. Plenty of mineral character on the palate, with some flair from some early lifted fruit character as well. Good length and balance, the acidity feels well integrated. Think this could be a star in 10+ years.
White
2014 Etienne Sauzet Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
91 points
Pine, orange, vanilla and light florals. Nicely balanced palate, shows some nice acidity and restrained fruit. Very enjoyable drinking already and given Sauzet's track record, I'd be okay with opening these over the next few years.
White - Off-dry
2016 Domaine Huet Vouvray Demi-Sec Clos du Bourg France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray
92 points
Melon, pear, pineapple and light herbs on the nose. Good concentration and fruit purity, with a lovely sweet and sour mix and acidity whipping through into a long finish. Really cracking stuff, I went out and bought a couple more after this!

Red
1966 Mildara Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
88 points
Blind. Boot polish, varnish, tobacco and charcoal. Palate has a light fruit sweet note to it, otherwise it is full resolved out. On the edge of being too old and holding on.
Red
1988 Wynns Coonawarra Estate Shiraz Burgundy Ovens Valley Australia, Victoria, North East, Ovens Valley
87 points
Blind. Herbal and undergrowth, blackcurrant and raspberry. Kick of fruit up front on the palate then back to the herbs and forest floor. Fun to try, but about to head downhill.
Red
2010 Domaine Louis Boillot et Fils Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Pruliers France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
90 points
Ash and charcoal with some floral lift and autumn leaves. The tannins kick in and grip hard on the palate here, the fruit weight helps a bit, but the real character of this wine won't be shown for a while yet.
Red
2014 Louis Jadot Clos de la Roche France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru
91 points
Cherry, redcurrant, smoke and dark spices. The nose is lovely but the palate needs time, it has powerful tannins and plenty of grip. Very good structure that hides the fruit and any early layers.
Red
2001 Conterno Fantino Barolo Parussi Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
88 points
Pine needles, resin and smoky wood. The palate is hit pretty hard by that wooden character as well, but the length ends up longer than I'd expect and there is some character there. Don't know what would happen to this with more time.
Red
2010 Conterno Fantino Barolo Mosconi Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Cola and chocolate, with some soapy notes on the nose. The palate has an unattractive metallic element and a bitterness towards the finish. Maybe this is in an awkward stage but tonight it wasn't showing well at all.
Red
2010 Valdicava Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
91 points
Char and ash, with cherry and raspberry lifting well. The palate shows some pepper and blackcurrant fruit, with tannins supporting very well. I like the mix of sweet and smoky styled fruit here. Very good length as well.

2010 Fattoria di Fèlsina Berardenga Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia Italy, Tuscany, Chianti, Chianti Classico DOCG
90 points
Cherry, oak and plum on the nose. The palate is set up with with good focus and structure, though seems a little awkward on the finish. Perhaps shut down in the 4 years since I tried it last and I hope it'll come out the other side well in 4-5 more years.

2012 Ulysses Napa Valley USA, California, Napa Valley
91 points
Blind. Blackcurrant pastille, cherry and vanilla with some tobacco as well. Bold fruit on the palate, this is punchy and dark, and yet the structure holds up to it very well. I think there is good quality here, although it didn't strike me as being typically Cabernet in style.

Red
1994 Parker Coonawarra Estate Terra Rossa First Growth Australia, South Australia, Limestone Coast, Coonawarra
92 points
Capsicum, tomato leaf, cassis, roast vegetables and cherry on the nose. Strongly herbal, but feels very representative of Australian Cabernet of this era. Good tannins still giving it structure and very good length. Will drink well now and over the next 5 years.
Red
2012 M. Chapoutier Ermitage Le Pavillon France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
93 points
Strong pepper, cherry, licorice and redcurrant on the nose. The palate shows off that peppery spice along with a mix of savoury and red fruit character. Very good length and composure along with great balance. 10-12 years should see this in a super place to drink.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2002 Dönnhoff Oberhäuser Brücke Riesling Eiswein Germany, Nahe
97 points
Orange, mandarin, pear and lemon with some swirling spices through the nose. The palate is electrifying, bursting with super concentrated fruit and crackling acidity. The sweetness sits in the background, giving the wine extra dimension rather than taking the focus. Brilliant, a genuine wow wine.
White - Sweet/Dessert
1983 Château Coutet Barsac France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Barsac
flawed
Corked.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2001 Château d'Arche Sauternes France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
89 points
Melon, pineapple and woody spices. Sweet palate throughout, with good balance and nice length. Lacking in complexity and depth, but still a nice way to close out the tasting.
