Introduction

Dinner # 163 was a grand event with one 1er Cru and 8 Grand Cru Domaine Leroy Burgundies from the 2007 vintage. It was accompanied by a carefully designed menu at Urbane including 3 classics of cooking by international chefs interpreted and prepared expertly by Executive Chef Andrew Gunn.

Flight 1 - Beginnings with Coffin Bay Oyster Natural and with lemon foam, Baby Beetroots with tiny leaves, Scallop with Jamon. (1 note)

2007 Domaine Leroy Corton-Charlemagne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

Tasted at the 2007 Leroy Dinner. This is classic Corton Charlemagne with a pale green-gold colour tending to gold in the decanter. The nose is initially dominated by free sulfur which becomes less dominant with time in the glass and a long decant revealing intense lemon rind, lime and grapefruit characters with a touch of pineapple and limestone. The palate is intense and quite rich with citrus dominated fruit and plenty of grip. The palate just fades a bit with less drive than I would have expected. I suspect 10-20 years in a cool dark place would bring forth a lot more complexity and finish.

Flight 2 - The Forerunners with Guy Savoy's Artichoke, Truffle and Parmesan Soup with Mushroom Brioche. (2 notes)

2007 Domaine Leroy Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
94 points
Tasted at the 2007 Leroy dinner. This is a fine 1er Cru Vosne Romanee with a clear medium dark cherry colour and an enticing nose of dark cherry, raspberry, strawberry and spices. The palate carries those characteristics with a medium weight impact with good length and shape with a nice touch of minerality at the end. This is a beautifully elegant wine that leads well into the wines to follow.
Red
2007 Domaine Leroy Clos Vougeot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
95 points
Tasted at the 2007 Leroy dinner. This is an impressive Vougeot with a deep dark cherry colour and a great nose of dark cherry, blueberry, earth, game and truffle. There is lovely body and density leading into a fine persistent finish. There is plenty of material for further development of this lovely bottle of CdV.

Flight 3 - Chambertins with Roast Duck Breast, An Extreme Duck Reduction and Joel Robuchon's Puree de Pomme (2 notes)

Red
2007 Domaine Leroy Latricières-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru
93 points
Tasted at the 2007 Leroy dinner. This wine had a clear cherry red colour and a lovely nose of red cherry, raspberry, game and earth that evolved in the glass. The palate carried those lovely fruit and game flavours through but seemed to be a little foursquare in structure with just a touch of green on the finish in comparison to its colleagues tonight. A real sense of Gevrey though and sat well with the food served tonight.

2007 Domaine Leroy Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru
96 points
Tasted at the 2007 Leroy dinner. This wine was a delight with a clear dark cherry colour with a beautiful nose of dark cherries, wild strawberry, hung game, earth and a touch of allspice. The palate reflected the complexities of the nose but demonstrated real balance and lightness despite the richness of fruit. There was a touch of rose in the mix and lovely length and completeness on the finish. A great drink tonight !

Flight 4 - Vosne Romanee Grand Crus with Massimo Bottura's Psychedelic 'Veal'. (2 notes)

Red
2007 Domaine Leroy Romanée St. Vivant France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru
96 points
Tasted at the 2007 Leroy dinner. This is an entrancing wine with a clear deep crimson/cherry colour and a kaleidoscopic nose of black cherries, blueberry, raspberry, violets and spices. The palate has a lovely weight and elegance with plenty of density and drive leaving you looking for the next pour. All the joy of great RSV is seen in this bottle where the more elegant vintage allows the purity to shine.
Red
2007 Domaine Leroy Richebourg France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru
97 points
Tasted at the 2007 Leroy dinner. A great counterpoint to the delicious RSV in this flight, the Richebourg demonstrated the robustness of its breed with a similar scented nose of black fruits, violets and spice but with an added earthiness of mushroom and beef stock that was both delicious and warming. The palate was rich with the robustness balanced with plenty of drive and structure that belied the 2007 origins. A wine that kept giving over the evening and will continue to for those fortunate enough to have this in their cellars.

Flight 5 - Neighbours with Comte and Fruits. (2 notes)

2007 Domaine Leroy Clos de la Roche France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

Tasted at the 2007 Leroy dinner. A terrific 2007 the CdlR has a deep and clear cherry colour with an earthy nose of dark cherries, raspberries, game and truffle that revealed more and more with time in the glass. The palate was rich and savoury with plenty of mouthfeel and grip. There was a lovely length to the finish of what seemed a wine with plenty of future potential.
Red
2007 Domaine Leroy Musigny France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru
98 points
Tasted at the 2007 Leroy dinner. A grand finish to a grand dinner the 2007 Musigny has clear dark cherry colour with a kaleidoscopic nose of dark cherries, redcurrant, wild strawberry, violets, dark chocolate and spices. The palate fans out similarly with a great complex of blue and red fruits, dark chocolate and touches of cumquat all carried along by a lovely minerality. There is great line and length with the true peacock's tail impact that persists. A wonderful wine !
