Red Star Seafood Restaurant

Tasted June 6, 2019 - June 8, 2019 by Friendless Drinkers Club with 212 views

Introduction

Tasting with VC Buddy and wife, Porto Prince, The Man and girlfriend. Most wines drank blind in rapid succession

Flight 1 - White Wines and Portuguese Wines (6 notes)

We started with 2 white wines. Then did 3 Portuguese wines blind and tried to guess grape varietal. Last wine was full blind and confusing...smelled new world but tasted like a Rhone wine

White
2017 Pequenos Rebentos Portugal
86 points
Alvarinho (Albarino) Simple white wine. Tasty and citrusy.
White
2011 Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clavoillon France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
90 points
Served it too cold. Should of had it warmer and decanted it. Tasted acidic with lemon, lime and stone aftertaste. Nice but needs more aging
Red
2017 FitaPreta Vinho Regional Alentejano A Touriga Vai Nua Unoaked Signature Series Portugal, Alentejano, Vinho Regional Alentejano
86 points
Good depth and color. No oak so pure expression of Touriga Nacional.
Flowery aroma, black fruit on taste but charred toast aftertaste.
Red
2014 Adega Mãe Merlot Portugal, Lisboa, Vinho Regional Lisboa
89 points
Tasted a lot like Right Bank wine. On the nose, floral, sweet elements. When you taste, very refined tannins, black plum, blueberries and silky finish.
Red
2016 Márcio Lopes Portugal
88 points
Anel Reserva. Flowery aromas but solid tannins. Dark fruit (blackberries)
Red
2017 Ulupalakua Syrah Estate Syrah USA, Hawaii, Maui, Ulupalakua
88 points
Like this. Tasted Rhone like but from the aroma, smelled like it was cold climate. Red fruit and started to firm up with aeration.

Flight 2 - Blind Red Wines (4 notes)

These were all blinded. By and large we were on the mark except for the Hungarian red, which no one guessed

Red
2009 Château Pontet-Canet France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
97 points
Very fleshy with blueberry, blackberry and black cherries. Explosion of fruit with nice oak core.

96 points
Spectacular wine with black cherry and pepper notes. Decanted for about 1 hour. Lots of fruit and hitting its peak. 96 pts.
Red
1986 Château Léoville Barton France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
93 points
Tasted blind and most people thought it was mid 1990s wine. Still have good fruit (blackcurrants) and spice. On Decanter 100 wines to drink before you die but I don't think it belongs on this list. Still a very good wine.
Red
2014 Peter Vida Szekszárdi Bikavér Hungary, Dél-Pannónia, Szekszárdi
86 points
Very interesting and distinctive but I was not familiar with Hungarian wines. Floral and medium bodied like a Pinot Noir

Flight 3 - Drunken Blind Tasting (4 notes)

At this time of night, really blind tasting. Total guessing but first wine was either corked or over the hill. Everything else was great.

Red
2007 Domaine du Vieux Lazaret Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
80 points
Seemed old and tired. Probably past its prime. Color was brownish and smelled almost corked and acidic
Red
2001 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
93 points
Tasted blind and everyone found this a great wine. Lots of fruit still and elegance. Floral and fig and plum tastes
Red
2012 Château Figeac France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
93 points
soft with tobacco, foresty aftertaste. Currant and plums
Red
2008 Domaine Robert Chevillon Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Saint Georges France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
93 points
Have had this a number of times and always great. Pop and open. Can have it at any temperature in any setting and still great. Lots of fruit aromas. Cherry, strawberry and Asian spice on the palate
