White
2017 Koehler-Ruprecht Kallstadter Saumagen Riesling Auslese trocken Germany, Pfalz
92 points
Glass: Josephinenhütte White/Universal
Wonderful nose. Very floral and herbaceous. Deep and complex. On the palate good pressure, wonderful ripe, high acidity, lots of extract, herbs, chalky mineral notes, some tannin, very good length. Great potential! 92++
White
2003 Dr. Bürklin-Wolf Forster Pechstein Riesling Germany, Pfalz
94 points
Glass: Josephinenhütte White/Universal
Popped and poured from perfect bottle. Deep, golden color. Clean, medium+ intense, fully developed nose with lots of ripe yellow fruit, smoke, some brioche, complex and beautiful.
On the palate wonderful deep and complex with a very good pressure and exciting tension. Salty, smoky, lots of ripe yellow fruit. Very long. At its peak, but this bottle would have had 5+ years left. Wonderful dry Riesling for this rather complicated, warm vintage! 94-95
White
2012 Weingut Keller Hipping Riesling Großes Gewächs Germany, Rheinhessen
93 points
Glass: Josephinenhütte White/Universal
Decanted for about 1h. Pale golden color. Clean, youthful, complex nose with citrus, orange zests, herbs, a bit tobacco. Dense and complex, not yet fully opened.
12% abv. Legally, but not sensory dry. Wonderful mineral core, lots of ripe, zesty fruit. Deep and complex, but still closed. Beautiful length. Give it 5+ years to fully shine. 93++
White
2016 Weingut Keller Abts E® Riesling Großes Gewächs Germany, Rheinhessen
92 points
Glass: Josephinenhütte White/Universal
Opened a few hours before, not decanted. Clear, pale golden color. Clean, classic Keller nose with ripe, juicy pineaooke, some herbs. Upside potential.
This one has tension and pressure and is certainly drier than the Hipping we had before. Nice fruit, zesty bitte notes, great chalky mineral core, long. More open than my last bottle, but still not ready to play. Great potential! Give it 6-8+ years. 92-93++

Glass: Josephinenhütte White/Universal
Decanted for about 1h. Clear, pale golden color. Clean, deep, dense and complex nose. Crushed stones, herbs, some pineapple.
2012 is getting better and better IMHO. Beautiful ripe and racy acidity, fresh pineapple, lots of extract. Juicy. Already with a wonderful intensity and length. But it is not yet fully there. Give it 3-5+ years. 93-94+

2015 Wittmann La Borne Riesling Alte Reben Germany, Rheinhessen
92 points
Glass: Josephinenhütte White/Universal
Decanted for about 1h. Clear, pale golden color. Clean, medium intense, fresh nose. Some honey, exotic fruit, wet stones. Dense and still closed.
Dry, medium+/high acidity that is still a bit nervous and unbalanced. Crushed stones. Some “sweet and sour” notes. Great potential, but in this stage very inharmonious. Give it at least 7-10+ years. 912-92++
White
2010 Wittmann Westhofener Morstein Riesling Großes Gewächs Germany, Rheinhessen
94 points
Glass: Josephinenhütte White/Universal
Popped and poured. Deep, golden color with amber reflexes. Nose with some lactic flavours, honey and botrytis.
Wow! On the palate with an enormous punch, racy, but ripe 2010 acidity, ripe yellow fruit. Some botrytis. Juicy, but also dense and with some extract. Very long, very beautiful. Seems to me reaching its peak, but absolutely no hurry. 94+

92 points
Glass: Josephinenhütte White/Universal
Half of the Magnum decanted. This bottle went with the dinner and this might be the reason why I did not payed close attention.
Deep, tawny-garnet color, cloudy, unfiltered. Clean, medium+ intense, developing BDX nose, maybe a bit rustic and green, but very appealing.
On the palate silky texture and tannin. Some green pepper, wonderful red fruit, spicy, some extract sweetness. Nice length. This bottle seemed to me at its peak, but will stay at this level for another decade. 92-93

1959 Château Beychevelle France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
93 points
Glass: Josephinenhütte White/Universal
Popped and poured. Clear, medium garnet color, no way showing its age. Beautiful, fully mature BDX nose. On the palate still alive and kicking. Tertiary notes, everything still wonderfully integrated, leather, tobacco, herbs. Wonderful sweetness, good length, very harmonious. Such a pleasure to taste this perfect bottle. 92-93

1982 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
94 points
Glass: Josephinenhütte White/Universal
Popped and poured. Clear, deep tawny-garnet color. Clean, medium+ intense rather developing nose with lots of red fruit, some barn, hints of tobacco and espresso. Astonishingly young, but really beautiful.
On the palate dense, with great tension. Medium+, ripe and round tannin, medium+, perfect integrated acidity. Wonderful red fruit, herbs, soil, truffle. Very long and complex finish. BDX at its peak and best! What a pleasure! 94-95

1990 Château Cos d'Estournel France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
93 points
Glass: Josephinenhütte White/Universal
Popped and poured. Clear, deep tawny-garnet color. Clean, herbaceous and young nose. Lots of extract, sweetness, menthol, some warm fruit, rum pot, silky texture, medium+/high tannin. Great potential, but not yet at its peak. 92-93++

2010 Château Le Gay Pomerol France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
93 points
Glass: Josephinenhütte White/Universal
Popped and poured. Tasted blind. Clear, deep youthful purple color. Clean, youthful nose, still a bit closed/muted, herbs, red fruit. BDX for sure, but I would have opted for the left bank.
On the palate very round and charming. But also deep, dense and complex. Lots of herbs, spices, amarena cherries. Pressure! Long, juicy finish with lots of fine sour cherries. Makes fun already, but is not even close to its peak. 93++

1981 Bodegas Vega-Sicilia Ribera del Duero Único Spain, Castilla y León, Ribera del Duero
93 points
Glass: Josephinenhütte White/Universal
Popped and poured. Clear, deep tawny-garnet color, quite youthful. Clean, a bit muted nose and note as intense as it could be. Spices, herbs, some fine leather and tobacco. Nice, but not great.
On the palate very lean and almost meagre. Driven by a wonderful racy acidity. Seems very young and still driven by fruit and some herbs. Very few tertiary flavours. Good length. Potential for at least 1-2 decades. Will it improve? I don’t know… 93-94
Red
2003 La Mondotte France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
94 points
Glass: Josephinenhütte White/Universal
Popped and poured. Tasted blind. Clear, deep ruby color, youthful. Clean, classic BDX nose, dense, spicy, herbaceous and lots of ripe red fruit.
Wonderful luscious ripe fruit, spices, finest tannin, very warm, a bit hot, sweet, concentrated, mineral and a bit chubby still. Very long and creamy. I would give this bottle another decade to fully shine. 94-95+

2010 Château Haut-Batailley France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
91 points
Glass: Josephinenhütte White/Universal
Popped and poured. Tasted blind. Clear, deep purple color, youthful. Clean, youthful nose with some eucalyptus, chalky mineral and lots of ripe fruit.
Concentrated, a bit hot, lots of red fruit, salty mineral notes. Warm. South America? Chile? Nice length, drinks already fine. 91-92

2013 The Wild Boys of Club Batonnage Austria, Burgenland
90 points
Glass: Josephinenhütte White/Universal
Popped and poured. Tasted blind. Clear, deep purple color, youthful. Clean, youthful nose. Lactic, jam, spices, vanilla, cooked cassis, dense, but also quite one-dimensional.
On the palate concentrated, hot, over extracted everything. Plum, rum pot, creamy, silky texture. Quite short. Hmm, why do they produce this monster? Ok, because they can. But do we need it??? Yes, it needs more time, but will this ever become a bit more elegant and balanced? I don’t know. Overpriced. 90-91(+?)

2013 Orin Swift Cabernet Sauvignon Mercury Head USA, California, Napa Valley
80 points
Glass: Josephinenhütte White/Universal
Popped and poured. Deep purple color, almost oily texture. Over-extracted, jammy and hot nose. I thought, that the 2013 Battonnage was already fat and bold, but this one is the pinnacle of over-extraction. Buy a glass of cassis and plum jam and a cheap bottle of vodka, mix it and you get the same result! This is not drinkable! We had 20+ wines this evening and this was the only bottle with over 50% left in the bottle. How do I rate this plonk? It is not flawed and is certainly well made, but I cannot rate it higher than 80 points for mercy’s sake.

2004 Sine Qua Non Syrah Poker Face USA, California, Central Coast
93 points
Glass: Josephinenhütte White/Universal
Popped and poured. Deep purple color. Clean, intense nose with Syrah on steroids! Spices, white pepper and Cassis. Monster, but not yet balanced.
How can I describe a wine that rare and expensive? I was not impressed or pleased. Can I write that? With over 100 CT notes averaging 96pts? But we had a great comparison this night with the 2003 La Turque. Wonderful acidity, very deep and dense, lots of red fruit, still very primary, mighty silky tannin, very spicy. But also a bit short on the finish.
Yes, this is a great wine with great potential and it might get 96+ pts in 20 years. But, at the moment it is rather chubby and compared to the other wines we had around 92-93+

2003 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Turque France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
94 points
Glass: Josephinenhütte White/Universal
Popped and poured. We should have decanted it. Mistake! Deep purple color. Clean, warm Syrah nose, spices. Lacks the complexity and depth of its elder brothers. Yes, we should have decanted it…
Compared to the 2004 Poker Face it was better in every aspect. Fresher, deeper, more balanced. Wonderful primary fruit, spicy, great mineral core. Very good wine, but far from being really great and close to 100PP. Time will tell… 94+

2010 Tenuta Greppo (Biondi-Santi) Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
91 points
Glass: Josephinenhütte White/Universal
Popped and poured. We should have decanted it. Mistake! Clear, medium tawny color. Clean, muted and a bit simple nose.
Wonderful ripe acidity, lean, elegant, dominated by red fruit and some thyme. Salty mineral notes in the back. Not yet fully developed and a bit short on the finish. Massive, velvet tannin and the good acidity giving me hope for a good development. 91-92+

2007 Weingut Keller Westhofener Kirchspiel Riesling Grosse Lage-R- Germany, Rheinhessen
91 points
Glass: Josephinenhütte White/Universal
Popped and poured. My fourth time trying to describe this wine. I am biased. I love Kirchspiel, but not with residual sugar…
Nose is deep and dense, chalky mineral notes, fine, ripe yellow fruit, some ripe pineapple. Really nice!
On the palate also dense, good extract, concentrated, ripe pineapple, some candied fruit. Nice, but due to the higher level of residual sugar it seems chubby and lacks the typical precision. IMHO this wine needs 10+ years to fully shine and the sugar to blend in.

1995 Willi Schaefer Graacher Domprobst Riesling Beerenauslese Goldkapsel Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
93 points
Glass: Josephinenhütte White/Universal
Popped and poured. Clear, pale amber color. Clean, fantastic and intense nose with lots of fresh and ripe apricot, honey, spices. Very deep, complex and fresh.
On the palate with a racy acidity. I would call it still perfectly integrated and balanced, others think it is too much. Lots of ripe Mango, apricot, juicy and young. Lacks a bit of substance and sugar to be really great. Long. Will stay on this level for decades. 93-94

2006 Selbach-Oster Bernkasteler Badstube Riesling Beerenauslese Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer
92 points
Glass: Josephinenhütte White/Universal
Popped and poured. From half bottle. Medium golden color. Very young and fresh nose with ripe mango. On the palate surprisingly few botrytis for this particular vintage. Lacks acidity, a bit chubby and short. But also juicy and joyful to drink. 92-93
White - Sweet/Dessert
1997 Château Suduiraut France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
91 points
Glass: Josephinenhütte White/Universal
Popped and poured. Clear, glowing amber color. Nose driven by botrytis and VA, though quite dense, but also not very complex.
I had a 1997 Yquem a day before and the Yquem was more complex in every aspect. This bottle showed as a classic, Sauternes without the additional complexity of non botrytis aromas. Oak was also not perfectly integrated. Long, but quite boring finish. This is another example for my current problem with Sauternes. 90-92
