On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol (13.5%), medium body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of gingery spice, flinty limestone minerality, citrus lemon. With more air, salty fatty butter oak emerges. Long finish.
Good quality. Distinctive. Though the effect of the flintiness followed by the oak emerging is somewhat jarring. Maybe some ageing of 2-3 years is in order.
White
2017 Jean-Claude Ramonet Puligny-Montrachet Les Enseignères France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet
91 points

Very good quality village Puligny. Good stuffing and has balance. Could take on a point or 2 with a few more years of age.
Interestingly, this village lieux-dit is located just below Batard and Bienvenues-Batard-Montrachet.

Red
2013 Domaine Jean-Marc Pillot Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot Les Fairendes Rouge France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
92 points
Tasted in Riedel white glass. Would have preferred the proper red Burg glass though, oh well that was for the more "serious" reds later in the session.
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of ripe red plums, ripe red strawberries, red cherries, licorice, light toast wood. Developing.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol (13.5%), somewhat tough grippy high tannins, medium+ body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of ripe red plums, ripe red cherries, strawberries, toast and licorice. Long finish.
Very good quality. Lots of stuffing, though this is clearly not balanced yet at the moment. A red burg for the long haul. Wow now I learn that Chassagne-Montrachet can be real good for Pinot Noir, and this seems to be made for ageing! Wait on this!

Flight 2 - Cote de Nuits Whites (2 notes)

White
2013 Domaine Bertagna Vougeot 1er Cru Les Cras Blanc France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vougeot 1er Cru
90 points
Tasted in Riedel white glass.

On the palate, dry, medium+ acidity, medium+ alcohol (13.5%), medium+ body. Medium+ favour intensity, with flavours of almond nuts, fatty citrus lemon, stony minerality. Pineapples with more air.
Good quality. Nice wine overall, though really nothing special going on - even feels somewhat underwhelming considering all the hype about the rarity of a Vougeot Blanc 1er Cru.
White
2011 Domaine de L'Arlot Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Clos de l'Arlot Blanc France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
91 points

On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol (13.5%), medium body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of salty stones minerality, brine, salted cheese, citrus lemon, honey. Long finish.
Very good quality. I like it quite a lot more than my score would suggest. Interesting elements. Can still age over the next 3-4 years for a bit more complexity, though it is already quite open and ready now.
Mainly Chardonnay with a touch of Pinot Gris.

Flight 3 - Cote de Beaune Reds (3 notes)

Red
2015 Seguin-Manuel Beaune 1er Cru Les Champs Pimont France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru

Acceptable quality. Really does feel very "Beaune" - can't put it exactly into words - may be what I mean is it's accessibility and easy drinking nature. Could age I suppose, and maybe it could surprise?
Red

Very good quality. A polished Pommard that still shows meatiness. Young now. Lots of potential for good ageing. Not entirely unapproachable now.

Flight 4 - Cote de Nuits Reds (6 notes)

Red
2011 Domaine de L'Arlot Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Clos des Forêts St. Georges France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
93 points
Tasted in Riedel Burg glass. 1st wine after lunch. And this wine is simply en pointe! Defies the vintage.
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of toasty wood, woody spices, fresh earth, ripe dark red cherries. Developing.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol (13.5%), structured medium+ almost high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of stemmy spices, dark toasty wood, undergrowth earth, rich dark red cherries. Very long but neat finish.
Very good quality NSG 1er. Lots of rich dark fruit stuffing and other complex stuff in it. Probably the effect of the clay topsoil in this plot.
Will clearly age well over the next few years.
Red
2011 Domaine Bertagna Vougeot 1er Cru Clos de la Perrière France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vougeot 1er Cru
90 points

On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol (13.5%), supple medium tannins, medium body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of loamy earth, limestony minerals, red cherries, cinnamon, woody spice. Long finish.
Good quality. Easy drink. Very middle of the road. Yes there is minerality befitting the terroir, but otherwise nothing else really exciting seeming to go on. Maybe this needs more time?
Red
2014 Domaine Arlaud Morey St. Denis 1er Cru Les Ruchots France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis 1er Cru
88 points
Tasted in Riedel Burg glass. Somehow this wine was not showing much love on this day. Certainly not like any of the other glowing reviews of this wine. Maybe currently not in a good phase?
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, ruby colour Legs.
Nose is clean, medium intensity, with aromas of red cherries and strawberries. Youthful.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol (13%), sticky medium tannins, medium body. Medium flavour intensity, with flavours of red cherries, strawberries, ?sticky candy gum. Medium+ finish.
Would certainly welcome a re-taste of this bottle. A good plot just below Clos de Tart, on the Chambolle side of Morey.

On the palate, dry, medium+ acidity, medium alcohol (13%), drying medium+ tannins, medium body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of dried red cherries, red plum, dried flowers, spice. Long finish.
Good quality. Actually quite pretty drinking now already. Can develop over the next few years, though I don't really have confidence in long ageing for this. Dried fruits doesn't seem like it will last.
Red

94 points
Tasted in Riedel Burg glass.

On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol, silky medium tannins, medium+ body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of concentrated red cherries, ripe strawberries, sweet earth, stony minerality. Long finish.
Very very good quality. Silky and goes down well. Very balanced and feels kinda light-bodied, though my opinion is it has lots of hidden depth. Will only develop more complexity with age. Well done.

95 points
Tasted in Riedel Burg glass. Aired about 4+ hours in bottle already.

Appearance is clear, very pale intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of soaring perfume, rocky stones minerality, chalky limestone, transparent earth, shy little red fruits. Developing.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol (13.5%), very silky medium- tannins, seemingly weightless medium+ body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of transparent red cherries, earth, and waves of stony minerality. Long finish.
Outstanding quality. One could be deceived into thinking this doesn't have enough stuffing. But it does and it is just tucking itself in for a nice deep sleep for a while in this Grand Cru. The weightlessness feels and the transparency here are great highlights. I want to try this again in 7-10 years!
Red
2013 Seguin-Manuel Clos Vougeot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol, medium tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of dark red cherries, meaty game, leather, earth. Long finish.
Good quality. Nice drink. Performing as it should for a heavier style Clos Vougeot from the clayey bottom of the Clos. Seems rather evolved already. Drink earlier rather than later.

On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol (13.5%), medium tannins, medium+ body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of red cherries, licorice, dark herbs, spices. Long finish. Palate-wise, voluminous but rather simple and linear at the moment. Just being embryonic at the moment I think. Needs time to fill out and develop.

Tasted in Riedel Burg glass. Aired about 4+ hours in bottle already.

Outstanding quality. Not quite ready to party yet. I'm not a total advocate of the whole 'In pursuit of balance' movement thing, but what impresses me is how such nice fruit ripeness and wine density is achieved at only 12.5% alcohol.
8-10 more years!

Tasted in Riedel Burg glass.

Very good quality. Ripe vintage shows and this serious polished Volnay has lots of material, and will still require some age to integrate and show, may be like 4-5 years. It is what it is.

Very good quality. Fine delicate aged White Burg, textbook like in its flavour profile delivery, and with a feeling of nary a hair out of place. Perhaps not showing as much forwardness as its Meursault Perrières and Charmes brethren just across the border. Drink up and enjoy.

Flight 8 - Old Vines vs Young Vines (2 notes)

White
2015 Domaine Jean-Marc Pillot Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Vergers Clos Saint-Marc France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
93 points
Tasted in Riedel Burg glass.
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, lemon colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of limestone minerality, citrus lemon, deep ripe peaches. Developing.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol (13.5%), medium+ body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of honeyed nuts, ripe citrus lemon, tangerines, sweet ripe peaches, stony minerality, smoky flint also. Long finish.
Very good quality. 100 year old vines from within the Vergers Premier cru. Showing lots of ripe fruit depth in this vintage. Remains to be seen how well this can age, though I have confidence this could improve and take on a point. Great stuff out of Chassagne.

2015 Domaine Jean-Marc Pillot Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Vergers France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
91 points
Tasted in Riedel Burg glass.
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, lemon colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium intensity, with aromas of white peaches, nuts, honey oil. Developing.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol (13.5%), medium body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of white peaches, citrus lemon, honey oil, light nuts. Long finish.
Very good quality. Comparing side by side in the same vintage against the Clos St. Marc, this definitely seems more linear and direct in its flavours, and doesn't have as much complexity. Otherwise quite reasonably good on its own and will age also, perhaps not as long as it already shows more development than the CSM at this time.
