Virtual Bordeaux Tasting

Introduction

This was the lastest in our on going series of virtual tastings. This was Tom's turn to choose the theme, and not shockingly he picked Bordeaux. So the four of us got our wines to Tom prior to the event. Wines were popped and poured direct from bottle to jars and then sealed around 4 to 4:30 pm for transport to our homes. The tasting began about 6:30pm with wines poured into glasses. These have been and continue to be a great way to stay connected and enjoy the same wines in a more typical tasting setting albeit virtually. Thanks to everyone!!!

Flight 1 (1 note)

White
2012 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis Grand Cru Les Preuses France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
93 points
Pale gold color. Drank a glass double blind plus over 3 hours. The nose is prisitne with an upfront beautiful oyster shell minerality that evokes the seashore, citrus fruits, lemon and grapefruit notes with a little pear, earth, and hints of fennel seed. The palate has a freshness and lift to its lively medium body, seashore minerality and limestone, a little more steely, just very pretty, Meyer lemon, white grapefruit with hints of lime, and a long finish. This just has so much purity, finesse and balance. This was clearly Chablis from the first whiff. I was thinking of something a little more steely like Louis Michel as it didn't have as much of that really pungent earthiness that Fevre often has. 93+ to 94pts.

Red
1985 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
92 points
Very dark red color with a 7mm transitional margin. Filtered into jars and sealed about 4:30pm, poured into glasses at 6:30pm and drank a glass plus over 3 plus hours. The '85 GPL had a classic Pauillac nose with lots of damp earth up front, tobacco leaf, pencil, leather, dark fruits and some purple flowers. The palate is deep with dark fruits, cassis, plum, very prominent pencil lead, coarse tobacco, silky tannins, charcoal and medium plus finish. As good as this was it was marred by cork taint that got worse through the evening. Fortunately, despite that, you could still appreciate the wine especially early on. I don't think these are in any danger of fading, though it remains to be seen if futher aging would benefical. 91+ to 92pts at peak.

Red
1990 Château Léoville Barton France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
93 points
Dark red color with a 1 cm transitional margin. Filtered into jars and sealed about 4:30pm, poured into glasses at 6:30pm and drank a glass plus over 3 plus hours. Love the nose, cigar wrapper, deeply earthy, a mix of black and red fruits, florals. The palate is leaner, more medium bodied, dark red cherry fruits, cassis, leather, medium grained tannins. I really enjoyed this, but I will say not to the level that I have most other bottles for whatever reason. I think an actual decant might have helped, but although it got better over the evening the palate never caught up to the nose. My #3 WOTN and group #2.

Red
1995 Château Lynch-Bages France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
92 points
Very dark red color with a 2mm clear edge. Filtered into jars and sealed about 4:30pm, poured into glasses at 6:30pm and drank a glass plus over 3 plus hours. More introverted and younger on the nose, muted dark fruits, damp earth, cassis. The palate is actually more open than the nose. Black and blue fruits, a little herbaceaus streak, deep dark fruits, tart fruit, wood spice, black cherry, ash, slightly sharp tannins. Like many of the '95's this was a little more rustic, and like LB in general this could have benefited by more age or a big decant as it never really wanted to fully come out and play tonight. I do suspect this will improve somewhat with additional aging. Hold or drink now with a very healthy decant. 91-92pts.

Red
1995 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
94 points
Very dark red color with a 3 mm clear edge. Filtered into jars and sealed about 4:30pm, poured into glasses at 6:30pm and drank a glass plus over 3 plus hours. This was the wine that benefited the most from air as the night went on. A pleasant nose at the outset was completely transformed into a beautifully perfume. Love the nose, right there with the '97 Latour. Fantastic perfume of black and blue fruits; cassis, boysenberry, underbrush, dried spice and sandalwood. The palate begins to evolve as well and shows the same black and blue fruits, casis, blackberry, boysenberry, graphite, full bodied, well concentrated, fuller round satiny tannins, and a lengthy finish. Much more open and accessible than the '95 Lynch and certainly one of the more polished '95's. 93+ to 94pts. My #2 WOTN and group #3.

Red
1997 Château Latour Grand Vin France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
94 points
Very dark red color with a 10-12 mm bricked margin. Filtered into jars and sealed about 4:30pm, poured into glasses at 6:30pm and drank a glass plus over 3 plus hours. Give me your poor, your tired, and your off vintages too. Well, at least give me them when it's a first growth that is as elegant, classy, and refined as this lovely '97 Latour. There was a distinctive purity here that resonated across both the nose and palate. The nose has such purity to the perfumey pencil lead, cedarbox, cassis, cigar wrapper and violet notes. The palate is medium bodied with perfectly integrated tannins, an elegant feminie beauty, sublime, black currants, pencil, cedar, earth, black truffle, and cigar. This has a great sily texture and a lovely complete finish. There's plenty of time to drink these up, but I don't see them improving much. My and group WOTN 94+pts.

White - Sweet/Dessert
2001 Château Suduiraut France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
96 points
Deep gold color. Poured into jars and sealed about 4:30pm, poured into glasses at about 9pm and drank a glass plus over an hour. Tangerine, orange peel, vanilla creme brulee, honey, vanilla bean, nectarine, and white flowers on the nose and palate with a blissful blend of acid, spice and sweetness. This is so wonderfully balanced; medium plus bodied, just awesome again! Would be WOTN if included in voting :).
