Introduction

Just a casual perusal of a few wines as a nice way to conclude a Sunday...order of wines was moderately random - went with the 50 year old St Emilion before the young Burgundy...

Flight 1 (7 notes)

Red
1970 Château La Tour Figeac France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
From Coravin. Sweet red plum, leather, tobacco leaf, sweet spice, backed earth, very slightly meaty notes, biscuit. More red currant than red plum in the mouth, tannins are fully resolved though there is a little vanilla and cream on the finish joined with a touch of bitterness. interestingly the tertiary notes from the nose don't really translate to the palate for me. Mmm.
Red
2016 Domaine Anne et Hervé Sigaut Chambolle-Musigny Derrière le Four France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny
From Coravin. Earth, spice, biscuit, red fruits; strawberries over cherries that end to jubey and a very slight ashy note. Juicy, similar fruits, silky tannins, young but shows promise; there is a fruit/acid/balance that I find quite compelling here. Nice.
Red
2004 Château Prieuré-Lichine France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
From Coravin. Bramble and blackcurrant, toasted oak, cedar, sweet spice, creamy plummy underpin. With time a little graphite joins the other aromas. In the mouth it's cedary and oaky; the fruit plays second fiddle to this but still shows through, tannins are slightly grainy but polished and mouth puckering. Hmm
Red
2004 Château Branaire-Ducru France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
From Coravin. Aromas of caramel, almost candy floss, plums, sweet spices, jubey black currant tends to a slightly course cassis note, quite jammy in fact but with some cedar as well. On the palate it has medium plus intensity acidity, black fruits and cream with drying, tightly wound though relatively silky textured tannins. All persist long with a touch of blackcurrant lozenge on the finish. Nice.
Red
2008 Château Branaire-Ducru France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
From Coravin. Quite austere on the nose after the 2004; pencil shavings and brambles initially. With time it grows riper and, well, jammier with plums and blackcurrants married to cedar and woody spices. That austerity translates to the palate with brambles backed by drying grainy textured tannins. On the finish it softens with an almost oat-meal creaminess and some plummy fruit. Pleasant enough but I think time will help.
White - Sweet/Dessert
1992 Château de Fesles Bonnezeaux France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Bonnezeaux
From Coravin. Lemon and lemon peel, honey, sweet spice, a little mushroom, leather, a little herbaceous note...medium plus intensity acidity, sweet, it's very lemon and lemon peel with slight glycerol richness, a little alcohol warmth and honey on the finish, some lovely texture to the mid palate. Long. Lovely.
White - Sweet/Dessert
1997 Château de Suronde Quarts de Chaume Grand Cru France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Quarts de Chaume Grand Cru
From Coravin. Apricot, lemon and lime marmalade, apple, slight vanilla and cream. Toasty notes, honey, botrytis shows very much here on the nose. medium acidity is perhaps not quite sufficient for the sugar levels. There is a caramelised baked apple note here as well. Hmm. It lacks a little freshness for me.

And what a pleasant stroll it was through avenues vinous...
