Introduction

took the coravin to some puppies who have returned from offsite cold storage to three fridges at home...

Flight 1 - Lanessan (4 notes)

I just can't seem to come to terms with this wine...I should probably sell everything I have left. They don't taste great (to me) when they're young or age with any finesse.

Red
2005 Château Lanessan France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc
From Coravin. Sweet and savoury spice, a little red currant, plum, cedar, wet earth, leather, with time the fruit gets a little dried out. Sourly juicy on the palate, quite red fruit, a little bitter which, combined with the tight tannins, creates a rather hard impression. A little liquorice and raisin on the finish. Nah on this tasting.

Red
2009 Château Lanessan France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc
From Coravin. Polished oak, blackcurrant, brambles, plums, sweet spice, a little clay, a little red currant underpin with time. Acid is a little sharp, the fruit is present, alcohol warmth on little obvious, drying talc textured tannins, medium plus length. Meh.
Red
2010 Château Lanessan France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc
From Coravin. Muted black fruit, clay, slight alcohol warmth, with time fruit delineates to show plum and blackcurrant, a little soy and dusty earth. Sharp acid, tight, chewy, chalky tannins, fruit is beneath this and it finishes a little bitter. Meh.

From Coravin. Cream, polished oak, jubey black fruit, with time a little earth and clay. Medium plus acidity, talc textured tannins, fruit tea flavours, medium plus length. Best of these, for me, but still not very exciting.

Flight 2 - Haut-Batailley (2 notes)

Nice to have a look at these two - at this price point there are other producers who I will go to first...

Red
1998 Château Haut-Batailley France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
From Coravin. Spiced red and black fruits, a little meaty element, with time blackcurrant, cedar, leather. Juicy, slightly sour fleshy red and blackcurrant fruit, sand paper tannins, leather, a little cedar, cream, nice.
Red
2007 Château Haut-Batailley France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
From Coravin. Leather, earth, slight pyrazine, blackcurrant, cedar, a little cassis. Juicy, slightly sour, savoury, fleshy, tannins are chalky and drying, leather, slight alcoholic warmth. Hmm.

Flight 3 - 2009's (10 notes)

Random selection of 2009's to check on progress. Interesting. Most still need time. That Potensac was pleasing

Red
2009 Château Fontenil France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Fronsac
From Coravin. Plummy, concentrated, smells 'thick' & 'dense', savoury, a little liquorice, baked spices. Mmm. In the mouth it has slightly sour acidity, chalky tannins are drying, alcohol warmth, muted but dense plum fruit, a little residual sugar. Hmm.

Red
2009 Château La Vieille Cure France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Fronsac
From Coravin. Earthy and a bit farty, muted black plums, slight leather, red currant and red berries in support, slight metallic notes. In the mouth it's juicy, fresh, savoury with black plus, soft tannic burr, balanced, long. Alcohol on the finish isn't intrusive and helps with the carry. Rather nice.
Red
2009 Château Pavie Macquin France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
From Coravin. Slightly oxidised notes initially, caramel, alcohol lends spice, concentrated plum compote, slight plain chocolate. Juicy, fruit sweet, plums, plain chocolate, tight woody tannins. Finishes quite savoury and leathery, clay. Hmm.
Red
2009 Château Charmail France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc
From Coravin. Wet blackcurrant but with a little alcohol and peppery spice initially on the nose. With time some raisins and sweet spice. Sourly juicy, raisins and blackcurrant, tight, drying floury textured tannins close things down, chalky minerality on the finish. Hmm.

Red
2009 Château Potensac France, Bordeaux, Médoc
From Coravin. Aromas of cassis, plum, sweet spice, cedar, a little pyrazine; classic claret for me. Juicy, fleshy, the flavours on the palate are a reflection of the nose, tight, drying floury textured tannins persist long. balanced and still quite primary. Very nice.

Red
2009 Château Patache d'Aux Médoc France, Bordeaux, Médoc
From Coravin. Medium minus intensity aromas of a little cream and dark fruit. With agitation it starts to show spiced blackcurrant, alcohol warmth, a little cedar, sweet spice, red currant and plum. Juicy, fleshy, black hued fruit is quite savoury, talc textured tannins, a red currant note joins on the long finish. One of its better showings for me. Nice.
Red
2009 Château La Tour de Bessan France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
From Coravin. Medium minus intensity aromas initially but, with agitation, starts to show jubey blackcurrant and brambles, sweet spice, cedar and a little mint. Nice nose. The acid is a little sharp on the palate which pushes the fruit more red spectrum, soft tannins, slight alcohol warmth carries the finish, medium plus length. Disappointing palate.
Red
2009 Château d'Arsac Margaux France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
From Coravin. Black hued fruit; blackcurrant, plums, sweet spice a little prune and raisin, slight alcohol prickle, a little earth, slightly dusty, woody notes, cream, liquorice. Juicy, fleshy, black over red currant fruit, a little prune and very slight raisin, tannins are softly textured but drying, alcohol warmth on the finish. Okay.
Red
2009 Château d'Issan France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
From Coravin. Very slight hit of cork taint/cellar stink initially, quite closed...with agitation it shows ripe blackcurrant, a little alcohol prickle, sweet and savoury spice, cedar, cassis. Juicy with slightly jammy black fruits, a little fruit tea, chalky tannins carry fruit long, with non-intrusive alcohol warmth. Best this has tasted. Nice.
Red
2009 Château Clerc Milon France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
From Coravin. Polished oak, cassis, blackcurrant, cedar, cream, clay, very slight bretty farmyard here. Juicy with black hued fruit, drying, slightly grainy, floury textured tannins, still showing quite primary for me. Feels like it still needs a bit more time.

Flight 4 - Oldies (2 notes)

Both of these were reminders of why I love older Bordeaux. The Poujeaux didn't last much longer after this tasting

Red
1986 Château Poujeaux France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Moulis en Médoc
From Coravin. leather, earth, mushroom, a little sour plum, brambles, Autumn leaves, sweet spice, biscuit, a little raspberry lozenge. the raspberry lozenge note translates to the palate with leathery tannic burr, other notes from the nose support on the long finish. Lovely
Red
1996 Château Pape Clément France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
From Coravin. Farmyard, Autumn copse, wet earth, brambles, a little saddle leather and horse sweat, a touch of bonfire and crushed rock, cigar box. Juicy, fleshy, brambles and blackcurrant, saddle leather, long, tannins are present, persistent but silky and very much in a supporting role. Exceedingly long. Wonderful.
