Flight 1 (9 notes)

White
2004 Clos Floridene Blanc France, Bordeaux, Graves
86 points
Slight petrol nose, smoke and green pepper and vanilla. Citrus and pear on the palate with a low acid, clean medium finish. A little light on the mid-palate. ok
Red
2004 Château Lagrange (St. Julien) France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
91 points
Coffee, candied cherry, plums and toasty oak with more cassis on the palate with a grainyand tannic but long cherry finish. Young but promising.
Red
2004 Château d'Armailhac France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
90 points
Earth, coffee green pepper and cassis. Rather muted or closed right now but shows good integration between the fruit, acid, tannins. Long tight finish. 90+ for now. Revist in 5 years.
Red
2004 Château Kirwan France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
89 points
Didn't like this that much as it was all in the nose. Modern styled wine with cassis and hints of vanilla and flowers. Palate was fresh with lively acidity but lacking in complexity in comparison with the other wines. Hopefully, this will sort itself out in time rather than it being an attribute of the winery's new approach to wine-making.
Red
2004 Château Duhart-Milon France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
92 points
Earth , coffee and blackberry with replays of chocolate and blackberry on the palate. Slightly drying tannins but very dark and brooding. Almost new world. I liked it.
Red
2004 Château Sociando-Mallet France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc
91 points
If you don't like green bell pepper notes, then stay away from Sociando. Huge nose of green bell pepper with lush blackberry on the very glycerin-imbued texture of the wine on the palate. Enjoyable and definitely approachable. Medium long finish.
Red
2004 Château Branaire-Ducru France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
88 points
Very rustic and austere. The most of the other 04s I had at this tasting. Coffee and cassis on the nose with an understated blackberry and cassis core framed by tannins and a closed but medium long finish. Not showing well due to youth and it being closed.
Red
2004 Château Smith Haut Lafitte France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
92 points
Nose of leather, chocolate and coffee and ripe blackberries with more sweet blackberry notes and plums on the palate. This is quite special for the vintage. Dark and brooding, it ain't no tannin wimp leaving my mouth scorched from the flesh-ripping tannins on their way down my throat. Long tannic finish. Young but decadent.
Red
2004 Château Montrose France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
92 points
If I thought the 04 Smith Lafitte was tannic, this stole the prize away. Very closed nose of cedar and chocolate and camphor/menthol. More menthol/camphor on the palate with a very tight structure underneath which isn't giving much away right now. Long finish and tannic. Closed but this will be great when ready. 92+
