White - Sparkling
2008 H Blin & Co Champagne Brut Millésimé France, Champagne
88 points
Served double blind. Almost over-the-top autolytic and yeasty notes on the nose, but palate is surprisingly much more fresh. Intense mushroom notes on the nose. Very apple-forward on the palate. Coarse bead that dissipates quickly. Simplistic but not unpleasant. Seems to have higher dosage; I thought this was a well-made non-Champagne sparkling wine.

2019 Le Vieux Donjon Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Served double blind. A mix of black and red fruit on the nose, with a slight bit of browning to the fruit. Comes across as ripe on the palate, with little structure. Kirsch-like, with some cough syrup notes and some cloying sweetness. No acidity, and bitter tannins. My 3rd, group's 9th.

2019 Domaine Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Served double blind. Heightened floral/herbal notes on the nose, with a distinct candied strawberry note. A similar herbal note on the palate, but somewhat obscured again by the sweet red fruit and a bit of vanilla as well. Clearly a grenache-heavy wine. Thin structure with a little more acidity than most in the lineup. Bitter finish. My 1st, group's 2nd.

Served double blind. Stewed cherries akin to black forest cake on the nose here. Clearly some volatility, as well as a very strange brettanomyces note that resembles a kriek more than any barnyard funk. Some menthol and herbal notes on the palate, but a short finish in all respects except for some bitterness. My 6th, group's 6th.

Served double blind. Fairly aromatic perfume with more of a dark-fruited quality. Oddly some malic acidity on the palate here, as well as plenty of astringency from both the tannins and an unpleasant herbal note. Thin and medicinal, and like all the wines today, quite bitter. My 7th, group's 3rd.

2019 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Served double blind. A mix of red and black fruit, but slightly stewy and feeling dried out. Thin and empty on the palate, missing midpalate, but with structural elements all jutting out, especially the alcohol and tannin. Feels like a wine that has dried out. My 5th, group's 5th.

Served double blind. Weird orange peel note on the nose, but also with some red berry notes. The palate here is sweet, and even though it doesn't seem to have much depth (it seems to be carried primarily by its alcohol) this wine has far fewer bitter tannins than most others in the lineup. My 2nd, group's 4th.

2019 Domaine de Ferrand Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Served double blind. Simultaneously has some vegetal notes and candied fruit. The palate mostly features the candied aspects, with the fruit very much in the bright red side of the spectrum. The ripeness also yields a bit of a plummy quality, but the tannins become more and more bitter with air. My 4th, group's 1st.

Served double blind. Something off with this wine, there was a weird smoky note here that I just couldn't get past. Otherwise the wine seems par for the course, except for the fruit going far more towards the black side of the spectrum. Lighter styled though; the bitterness and alcohol don't seem to jut out so much. My 12th, group's 11th.

Served double blind. Mute nose, but with some coaxing, notes of black currant, most reminiscent of Ribena. This has that same sweet, somewhat cloying quality on the attack, but then there's a fairly empty midpalate, and then the typical bitter tannins on the finish. Feels hollow due to the missing midpalate, and in fact, I'd say this even lacks structure because the tannins don't show up until the very end. My 8th, group's 10th.

2019 Clos Saint Jean Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Combe des Fous France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Served double blind. Black cherry ice cream with chocolate chips and a vanilla base. Great dessert. This isn't a dessert (or even a dessert wine). Oaky, high-toned, confected, sweet, and finishes incredibly bitter. My 9th, group's 7th.

Served double blind. Sickly sweet, modernist, cough-syrupy, high-toned, astringent stuff. My 11th, group's 8th.

Served double blind. A hint of reduction and maybe a little bit of pyrazine, followed by oak, and a dose of purple fruit invoking Welch's. Sweet, low acid, and purply. My 10th, group's 12th.

Red - Fortified
1994 M. Chapoutier Banyuls Vin Doux Naturel France, Languedoc Roussillon, Roussillon, Banyuls
85 points
Probably the best wine that Chapoutier makes (which of course is not really saying anything). Distinct oxidative notes on the nose (dried shiitake mushroom) give this a very savoury quality. Moderately sweet on the palate with some tannins remaining and a slightly oily texture. Interesting, but not a wine that commands much more than a taste before moving on.
