Introduction

24 friends gathered for a long Saturday lunch to celebrate Shane and Caroline's engagement.

Flight 1 - Aperitif (0 notes)

An NV Champagne I didn't register amidst the initial greetings and introductions.

Flight 2 - Pan-seared Hokkaido Scallops & Saled (2 notes)

A classic Crown dish but taken to a higher level on this occassion....gorgeous.

Several bottles served as an opening aperitif. Light and canary gold colour. Lovely very buttery but not heavy nose with some salinity. Palate is medium acidity and a slightly dried-out almond nuts semi-oxidisation… not much else. Maybe some blowtorched lemon but without freshness. No length. Seems rather over the hill and definitely a big disappointment compared to when I last drank it in 2016 when I could at least glimpse at why it was hyped as Italy's Montrachet.

My contribution shared quietly with our table of 8. 1-hour decant. Very pronounced deep golden Manuka honey colour. Has actually lightened up in the glass on serving 2+ hours later. But still has the slightly oxidised nose. But the palate has really shrugged off any question marks - really lemony. I have 9 more bottles and will speed up drinking them as I think this is at peak and maybe on a downward precipice.

Flight 3 - Rack of Baby Lamb (4 notes)

Another Crown classic but, agin, the presentation was a level higher than normal....succulent and just lovely.

Several bottles served to the group of 24 of us. Very light almost transparent jewelled ruby colour. Nose is lifted but overly candied cherries and funfair cotton candy. Palate is painfully sweet and undrinkable.

Several bottles served to a group of 24 of us as the main red wine to accompany a sublime Rack of Lamb main dish. Not decanted. Semi opaque jewelled ruby lightening more at the edges. Nose of understated but compelling soft damp woodland loam, lovely autumnal raspberries and red plums. Gorgeous scented cedar woods in a warm late evening. Palate is a bit disappointing by comparison. Similar sensations but low on acidity or tannic structure and lacks verve. Definitely ‘drink up’. I was surprised how much this has aged since I last drank it from my friend's same case or cases in late 2019. We agreed that early storage had probably not been great. Still, it was very enjoyable as a Pomerol slipped into premature tertiary mode. 89-90

A couple of bottles opened after the main red and decanted only a maximum of 2 hours, which is not enough for this wine even at 17 years old. Almost fully opaque black red except for slight maroon meniscus. Nose is very tightly coiled black anthracite and deep-frozen black fruit. Palate is bitter Chinese green melon if melon can be black. Very tannic on the back end. There is gorgeous structure and elegance here but it is all hidden by too short a decant. Easy to make this mistake. 92 for this experience but this has been 96 for me recently in better circumstances and after a 5-hour decant.

Two bottles opened with minimal decant (which was probably OK) mear the end of a very long celebratory lunch.Semi-transparent lovely black- red gemstone colour. Nose is profoundly deep confit blackcurrant and redcurrant, cedar shingles in the sunshine, some blackcurrant liqueur. Complex and mesmerising.. palate is similar confit depth of red-black fruit but enhanced by dried ground Asian spices…. nutmeg, galangal, liquorice, red chilli. Great length but one step below 'silence creating'. This seems to be completely at its peak drinking right now judging from the 8 times I have regularly drank it since 2013. 93+

Flight 4 - An afterthought (1 note)

Red
2005 Château Lynch-Bages France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
A classic tale of a lovely wine pulled impulsively from the cellar at the tail end of a very long lunch. Popped and poured. Deep red-black opaque. Nose is....I didn't get beyond that point with my notes but this was lovely when I drank it more contemplatively from magnum a year ago when it was an easy 94 pts.

A really great, eclectic crowd and a super celebration. The food was a big step up in quality and presentation compared to sometimes at Crown but the service was excellent as always.
