Bordeaux at Basil's

Basil's in Minneapolis

Tasted April 11, 2008 by Mattshank with 461 views

Introduction

The theme tonight was Bordeaux from 2001 or older. We had a good mix of ages and appellations. The participants were John G, John R, Michael M, Nate M and me. As usual a good time was had by all.

Flight 1 (7 notes)

White
2006 Artesa Chardonnay Carneros USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros
91 points
Same as last tasting notes. Decent starter wine for the evening.
Red
2000 Château Olivier France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
91 points
Nose: Mineral nose of red clay, spice, and subtle vanilla. Over time more floral qualities exhibited. Palate: Soft notes of cherries and mineral. Very feminine wine that is drinking well now. A close 2nd place to the Leoville Las Cases.
Red
2000 Château Lafon-Rochet France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
flawed
Flawed bottle that had a bizarre woody quality. It happens. No rating given.
Red
2004 Château Lascombes France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
90 points
Nose: Deep toasty nose that opens up over time to show lead and earth. Palate: Dark fruit and some pencil lead with good acid and soft tannins. Just a baby this should develop well with several years of cellaring minimum. Even though the format was 2001 and older, Michael who brought the 1997 Puy-Lacoste, wanted us to try this as well. Thanks Michael.
Red
2000 Château Grand Mayne France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
90 points
Nose: Slate and perfumy nose that is very elegant with some hints of leather. Palate: Very soft red fruit with a fairly quick finish. Nice wine that shows a more feminine side of St-Emilion.
Red
1997 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
90 points
Nose: Lots of pencil lead, and scorched earth with more fruit showing with aeration. Palate: Very nice muted red fruits with a little bacon and earth. Not a great Pauillac, but nice.
Red
1991 Château Léoville Las Cases France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
92 points
Nose: Initial funk on the nose that quickly burns off showing cedar and subtle herb notes. Palate: Very well balanced, mature wine with soft fruit, cedar flavors and subtle tannins. This wine still has plenty of life, but why wait? Drink up. My WOTN.
