Introduction
Another big tasting at Phil's place, Tim joined us to try a shedload of stuff from quite a few places with the Coravins...Phil did some steak and various protein based nibbles were available...
Flight 1 - Marc Bredif (4 notes)

2012 Marc Brédif Vouvray
From Coravin. Biscuit, a little citrus, ripe lemon, waxy, honey, slight salinity. Medium plus intensity acidity, lemon, slightly saline, waxy textured. Slightly forward but very nice.

2008 Marc Brédif Vouvray
From Coravin. Medium minus intensity aromas of lemon, lanolin. Medium plus intensity acidity, lemon, waxy, smidge of green apple, very slight honey. Okay.

2001 Marc Brédif Vouvray
From Coravin. A little lime over lemon, slight kerosene, slightly herbaceous, honey, bees wax. Medium plus intensity acidity, tangy, very slight burr on the mid palate, long, citric. Hmm.

1985 Marc Brédif Vouvray
From Coravin. On the nose it's waxy, with honey, lemon, slight lanolin, a little oyster shell. In the mouth it shows a lemony tang, textured grip, slightly waxy but slightly linear, honey. With time in the glass starts to fall away a little...might need to tidy this one up
Flight 2 - Riesling (5 notes)
Lots to love here - for me the Freiherr Langwerth was the winner, The Leeuwin Estate showed well - but the Burklin Wolf wasn't right...

2009 Freiherr Langwerth von Simmern Hattenheimer Mannberg Riesling Trocken
From Coravin. Cream, a little peach, green apple, very slight tropical fruit, pretty nose. Juicy, fresh apple, textured, long, a little peach and cream note to the finish. A bit soft but yum.

2011 Weingut Josef Leitz Rüdesheimer Berg Rottland Riesling Trocken
From Coravin. A little lime, chalky minerality, citrus underpin, a little crystalline lime. Medium plus intensity acidity, lime and a little texture, lime cordial on the finish. Slight alcohol warmth. Hmm.

2012 Weingut Josef Leitz Rüdesheimer Berg Rottland Riesling Trocken
From Coravin. Savoury, cinnamon, green apple, slight kerosene. Medium plus intensity acidity, textured burr, lime over green apple though it does feel slightly more unripe than the 2011. A touch of bitterness on the finish.

From Coravin. Very slightly herbaceous, meaty, tomato leaf, honey, marzipan...ooh, not very nice on the palate...something wrong here. FLAW

2002 Leeuwin Estate Riesling Art Series
From Coravin. Lime, stony minerality, a little lime cordial and kerosene. Juicy, lime juice but this is more in the softly engaging space, simple, a little honey reveals the age, long with slight warmth but this is otherwise very nice.

2001 Rapet Père et Fils Corton-Charlemagne
Waxy, buttery, slightly oxidised, almond meal, rich, honey. Juicy, fleshy, buttery, honey, oaky, fruit quite muted...this is at the end of its life. Time to drink up (preferably with fish drenched in butter)

2017 Hoddles Creek Chardonnay Syberia
Savoury, meaty, lemon, slight tomato leaf blows off, a little struck match. Medium plus intensity acidity, a little savoury, wild ferment, textured, lemon, but fruit second fiddle, good quality oak, needs time to really pop.

2019 Giaconda Chardonnay Estate Vineyard
Aromas of bacon fat, serious oak, a little stone fruit peeks out after a fair amount of time. Juicy, fleshy, tangy, textured burr, stone fruit with slight citrus underpin. Travels long but this is full on vinfanticide.

Interesting bracket of blanc de noirs
White - Sparkling
2012 Vouette et Sorbée Champagne Fidèle
Aromas of honey, biscuit, slightly oxidative notes, a little apple, very slight volatility. Pronounced acidity is sour, mousse lends texture and there is plenty of texture on the mid palate as well. Looks and feels red grape based. Interesting and slightly odd.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Devaux Champagne Coeur des Bar Blanc de Noir
Aromas of cherry, raspberry, a little biscuit and strawberry. Crisp mousse, perhaps a little residual sugar to offset the slightly sour acidity, red hued fruit, slight bread yeast, rather nice.

I did enjoy the Chantal Lescure and the Bass Phillip Premium was like an old friend

2016 Maxime Dubuet-Boillot Volnay Sur Roches
From Coravin. Medium minus intensity aromas of a little wood glue, biscuit, red over blackberry, a little reticent/closed. Sourly, juicy, savoury, quite chalky tannins fruit plays second fiddle to the structure. This showed far better the last time I tried this. Hmm.

2011 Domaine Chantal Lescure Nuits St. Georges Les Damodes
From Coravin. Red berry, ashy stalks, sweet spices, meaty, smidge of farmyard, leather, a little wild ferment. Medium plus intensity acidity, savoury, actually tends to sour, red hued fruits, red currant, a little textured burr, fruit tea. Nice.

From Coravin. Quit a rich nose with dark cherry, sweet spice, pretty, polished. Juicy, fleshy, savoury, cherry, equally polished on the palate. Nice.

From Coravin. Aromas of wood glue, blackberry, slightly peppery spice, stalks and cream under this. Juicy, slightly ashy, black hued fruits, textured, slightly chalky grip, a little cream on the finish. Nice

2001 Bass Phillip Pinot Noir Premium
From Coravin. Pretty, raspberry and cranberry, sweet spice with a savoury underpin, smells fresh and like my historical experience of these wines. A little tertiary leathery, earthy notes. In the mouth it's juicy, savoury, earthy, fresh, red hued fruits, long, rather lovely.

2006 Bass Phillip Pinot Noir Estate
From Coravin. Closed and reticent initially but, with time, polished oak, red and blackberry, sweet spice, cream and I get a little ashy herbaceousness. Juicy, tangy, slightly sour, slightly herbaceous, something not quite right here. Hmm.
Flight 6 - Mount Pleasant (2 notes)
I do like Mount Pleasant wines as I may have disclosed previously...Very kind of Phil to pull these outs...

Savoury, spicy, earthy, leathery, slightly chalky almost smoky notes. Savoury with tightly textured tannins, muted black fruits especially plum, slight alcohol warmth on the finish. Okay.

1998 Mount Pleasant Wines Shiraz Old Paddock & Old Hill
From Coravin. Gamey, meaty, slightly oxidised bruised apple caramel notes, baked black fruits, earthy with a sour fruit note. Hmm. Sourly juicy (acidity adjusted?) talc textured tannins, new oak, alcohol warmth on the finish.

From Coravin. Aromas of blackcurrant, cream, cassis, sweet spice, clean, polished nose. Sourly fresh, fruit a little less ripe than I expected based on the nose, talc textured tannins, cream, the polished oak rather jars on the finish.

2005 Château Rauzan-Gassies
From Coravin. Gamey, red and blackberry, plum, blackcurrant, sweet spice, a little leather and cedar, cream. Medium plus intensity acidity, similar fruit profile, fruit travels long with some alcohol warmth. Yum.

2003 Rovellotti Ghemme
From Coravin. Fruit tea, red berry, a little pot pourri, and dried orange peel. Juicy, fresh, fleshy, fruit tea, tannins encroach and just do not quit but are very much time of a team performance. Very long. Lovely.

2011 Damilano Barolo Lecinquevigne
From Coravin. Closed and reticent initially. With agitation some red cherry, spice, orange fruit tea. Medium plus intensity acidity, medium plus intensity chalky tannins, slight alcohol warmth, a little red cherry, fruit tea in support. Feels like it needs time to come together (despite being 11 years old)

What a lovely bracket of wines - Pity about the 97 Great Western...

1996 Seppelt Shiraz Great Western Vineyard
From Coravin. Leather, black hued fruit, sweet spice, black pepper underpin and a little black tea. Juicy, black fruits, sweet and savoury spice, woody, chalky textured tannins are persistent, slight alcohol warmth. Nice.

From Coravin. Slightly oxidised caramel notes, muted black fruits, a little red currant, savoury spice. Sour, a little cream, oaky tannins, not much fruit on the palate, pretty awful.

1997 Seppelt Shiraz Reserve Great Western Vineyard
From Coravin. Medium minus intensity aromas are meaty, savoury, black hued fruits - blackberry over plum that is concentrated and a little closed & reticent with an earthy underpin. Juicy, savoury, concentrated, chewy tannins are integrated with the black fruits. Balanced. Showing considerably younger than its years. Very good indeed

1998 Seppelt Shiraz St Peters
From Coravin. Meaty, savoury, slightly sour smelling red over black fruits, a little pepper and leather. Fruit is almost a little jubey on the palate, black hued with chalky, drying, grainy tannins, then swing by but the fruit, assisted by the alcohol, persists and carries long. Nice.

From Coravin. Orange peel, earth, baked red fruit, a little garrigue quality. Chewy, savoury, baked red fruits, tight chalky tannins, alcohol warmth on the finish. Better than last time I tasted this but <shrugs>

From Coravin. meaty, savoury, slightly reductive, sweet spice and muted fruit, a little smoky note, toasted oak. Medium plus intensity acidity, lots of woody tannins but lacks fruit. Meh.

From Coravin. Earthy black hued fruits, savoury with sweet spice, leather, slightly sour red cherry underpin, vanilla, coconut and a little chocolate with time. Medium plus intensity acidity is a little high (adjusted), savoury with a fruit sweet core, talc textured tannins, alcohol warmth, long, pleasant.

From Coravin. Biscuit, toast, closed, alcohol heat, slightly porty fruit. Juicy, fleshy, baked black fruits, plenty of oaky tannins and alcohol warmth in support...it's a bit shouty but it's in balance.

From Coravin. Sour red fruit, biscuit, slightly volatile, cherry, wood glue, dusty spices. Medium plus intensity acidity lends sourness, lashings of chalky tannins are drying, needs years but pretty unpleasant at the moment...

This was a bit of a disappointing bracket for me...The stanton and killeen is the one that I would probably knock the top off given the choice...

1999 Yarra Yering Portsorts
From Coravin. Sour red fruit, herbaceous, chalky underpin. In the mouth it's sour with residual sugar which lends a cheap Chinese take-away sweet and sour sauce quality to the flavour profile, chalky tannins. Not very nice.
White - Fortified
1977 D'Oliveiras Madeira Terrantez
From Coravin. Aromas of figs, walnuts, baking spice, molasses, a little red cherry...Medium plus intensity acidity, drying tannins, a little sour, similar flavour profile to the nose but it's all a bit sharp and pointy. Yum nose, palate less so...

1987 Stanton & Killeen Vintage Port
From Coravin. Biscuit, then plummy black fruits, a little walnut and figs, raisins. Sweet red berry fruit is slightly lozenged, jubey, a little fig, slightly chalky finish, nice.

1990 Campbells Touriga Nacional Vintage Port
From Coravin. A little reticent, red and black fruits, a little sweet spice, oak, a little herbaceous note, slight raisins. Medium plus intensity acidity, alcohol a little intrusive, figs, walnuts, a touch coarse on the palate with chewy woody tannins. Hmm.
Red - Fortified
1996 Rockford Shiraz VP
From Coravin. Blackberry, sweet spice, savoury, peppery, slightly spirituous, slight vanilla. Still very young on the palate, slightly coarse brandy spirit, alcohol warmth, raspy tannins, pretty rough stuff.
Closing
Probably the Bredif and the Seppelt as the two best brackets of the night...Pinot's weren't bad...lots of lovely wines regardless and, though a couple of wines were arguably a little stripped or slightly oxidised nothing was undrinkable or corked...
