Vosne or Volnay?

Tasted November 14, 2022 by melvinyeowq with 175 views

Introduction

Vosne vs Volnay theme (with one outlier) which turned out to be more difficult than expected with nobody getting more than half right.

Flight 1 (12 notes)

Not an easy one to guess. I went for 2015 Puligny but some of the others were thinking 18/19 Chablis, I thought it was showing some development despite the freshness. The warm citrus fruit coupled with the high acid led me to a warm vintage, cooler plot, but I got it the wrong way round. Enjoyable and a pristine bottle for its age.

2016 Domaine Francois Lamarche Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Chaumes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Think the others liked this much more than me. Had a distinct sweet, jammy note at the start with a hint of cola - reminded me of the '19 Hudelot-Noellat that I had a few months ago which seemed overripe. Got better with air but the warmth still stuck out. Guessed 2018 Vosne.

2019 Domaine Coquard Loison-Fleurot Vosne-Romanée France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée

Very pleasurable and one of the more accessible 2019s. Dark blackcurrant fruit but had a sturdiness to the wine that made me think this was a Volnay. Liked the layered depth of the fruit on this. Got a little new-worldish when I revisited it at the end of dinner when it turned a little too dense and sweet but the earlier pours were very good.
Red
2012 Dupont-Tisserandot Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
91 points
This was quite dense with dark red fruit, but seemed a little light in structure at the same time without much depth. Quite old-school winemaking with rusticity but fruit became more expressive with time that gave it better balance. Thought this was a Volnay but turned out to be the ringer.
Red
2014 Nathalie Vigot Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Petits Monts France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Started off rather tight and brooding, but this really blossomed with air. Gained elegance with time and even though it was darker-fruited than I expected for a Vosne (I guessed Volnay) with ripe cherry fruit, I thought that everything was in place for this wine as it showed great balance.

2010 Louis Jadot Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
93 points
Brought this for a friend and was surprised this showed so well since Jadot's Vosnes aren't their best holdings. Had the most seductive, lifted nose in the line-up that everyone agreed was the best nose of the flight. Loved the velvety texture and the purity of berry fruit that the best 2010s have. I guessed Vosne but I could see why some went with Volnay with the Jadot structure of the wine. Won the overall vote for WOTN and was also my favourite of the night

2013 Domaine Jean-Marc / Thomas Bouley Volnay 1er Cru Caillerets France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
91 points
Similar to the previous times that I had this wine. Quite dark and dense, not showing much at the moment but very good potential. Placed this correctly as Volnay.

2014 Domaine Jean-Marc / Thomas Bouley Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

Quite confident this was my wine based on previous experiences with Bouley, was happy that I finally got something right. Very pretty red-fruited nose with some stem influence, good depth and structure (which made sense given the plot on revealing) but thought it was from a lighter vintage. This was more ready to go compared to the '13 Caillerets for sure.

2007 Domaine Henri Boillot Volnay 1er Cru Caillerets France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

Brought this for a friend. This stood out stylistically from the rest so by that reasoning I thought that this was the outlier. Had a distinct meatiness and savoury note that made me think it was a Gevrey. Had greater density and riper fruit than I expected for a 2007. Would have been interested to taste this by itself as it seemed a little foursquare and antiquated alongside the other wines.

2007 Domaine Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

More closed than the previous bottles that I have tried before but had the trademark elegance of the producer which made me guess Vosne on this. Otherwise similar impressions to my previous bottles.

2017 Jean-Jacques Confuron Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
90 points
Darker fruits with a distinct cola note which made me guess Volnay, but on revealing I could see the stylistic similarities with the '02 RSV that I tried the other week. Rather tightly wounded still and needs time.
Red
2009 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Volnay 1er Cru Santenots-Du-Milieu France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
89 points
Guessed a modern maker of Vosne from warmer plot like Brulees. Plenty of spice and good complexity but the red fruit seemed overripe. There seems to have been a stylistic shift in Lafon's reds from those of the 1990s.
