Bellevue, WA, USA

Tasted March 4, 2023 by Eric with 118 views

Introduction

Barry & Gina hosted a suddenly diminished ESTG group for a Red Burg centered tasting.

Flight 1 (2 notes)

A pair of wines as we arrived.

White
2019 Domaine Roy & Fils Chardonnay Estate Iron Filbert USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills
12.5%. Austere and steely, very much in the style of a Chablis. Not easy. Very closed in.

Red
2015 Flowers Pinot Noir Russian River Valley USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
Nice, toasty, generous and warm, strawberry, fairly juicy and jammy but not heavy. Quite enjoyable, a beautiful wine with salmon.

Flight 2 (3 notes)

We started with the younger Burgs.

Red
2013 Frederic Esmonin Ruchottes-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru
Surprisingly brown color, but that has a beautiful nose with a bit of pine breeze. Very tart with lots of acidity, piercing, a real laser. Some nice Pinot funk. Very tight and really dominated by its acidity at this stage.

Red
2013 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Maréchale France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
Wonderfully mineral, precise, focused. It's so tight, showing some sulphur and reductive notes, LOTS of tannin. This is very early and wants a ton of aeration. (We had popped and poured this which was a mistake.)

Red
2018 Domaine Anne Gros Echezeaux Les Loachausses France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
Some latex on the nose at first and a healthy bit of stem. Explosive fruit, blackberry. The funk blows off with time in the glass and is wonderfully primary and pure.

Flight 3 (3 notes)

And then a wonderful flight of more mature examples.

Red
1999 Domaine / Maison Vincent Girardin Corton-Bressandes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
Mmm, meaty, horsey, saddle leather and a powerful mint/menthol element. Wow, such a nice interplay of mineral, pure fruit, secondary elements, juicy and explosive. Michael mentions "green pepper" which to me is more of the menthol that I noticed at first. Consensus wine of the night, really a showcase for why you age Burg.

Red
2003 Louis Jadot Clos Vougeot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
This shows the ripe vintage with a freshly baked fruit pie. Mmm, this has wonderful fruit, ripe and generous but not overripe or too roasted. Long, long with buckets of fruit.

Red
2005 Domaine Denis Bachelet Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin
A chemical element at first, mmm, so much structure and grip. Impressive more than purely pleasurable.

Flight 4 (1 note)

And something sweet to finish out.

Red - Fortified
2012 Torii Mor Syrah Port USA, Oregon, Southern Oregon, Rogue Valley
Hooboy, searing alcohol on the nose, but the palate is stupidly tasty, black pepper, sweet fruit, blackberry. An impressive 20.6%. Pour it over vanilla ice cream...
