Introduction

This was a Commanderie de Bordeaux of MN event featuring a comparison of two vinatges of Lafite Rothschild, Leoville Las Cases, and Cos d'Estournel. We had a large group of around 29 in attendance. Food was outstanding this evening from chef Hakan Lundberg and his team at Minikahda. The 2000's were starting to show nicely, while the '18's were youthfully intriguing.

Flight 3 - Bordeaux Flight 1 (2 notes)

Red
2000 Château Léoville Las Cases France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
96 points
Very dark red/purple color. Double decanted and then slow-O for 4 hours, recorked and then slow-O again for an hour before serving. Drank a glass plus over 2.5 hours. This has a gorgeous nose that is oozing pencil and earth with pretty dark berries and cassis notes followed by touches of menthol, tobacco leaf and creme de menthe, anise, wood spice. The palate is layered and deep, cassis, boysenberry, blackberry, pencil, cigar box, long and powerful with somewhat firm but ultra fine tannins. This was quite expressive despite the sense of youtfulness at 23 years old. Loved it, and can't wait to see where this beauty is in another 10 and then 20 years from now. Ranking: WOTN '00 Lafite, #2 '00 LLC, #3 '00 Cos. 96(+)pts.

Very dark red/purple color with a garnet hue. Double decanted, slow O for about 3 hours. Drank a glass over 2 plus hours. Youthfully green, tight, young dark nose. The palate has that same green streak now, but with aggressive swirling it wants to show itself with really damp and almost swampy earth, soil and minerals, tart black cherry, tart raspberry, oak, dark chocolate, very long with polished tannins. Nowhere near ready, glorious reviews notwithstanding. While it is an interesting excercise, frankly, I don't really want to drink them at this point. Score reserved.

Flight 4 - Bordeaux Flight 2 (2 notes)

Red
2000 Château Lafite Rothschild France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
98 points
Very dark red/purple color. Double decanted and then slow-O for 4 hours, recorked and then slow-O again for an hour before serving. Drank a glass plus over 2.5 hours. Wow, mesmerizing nose from the start; perfumed with succulent red and black fruits; cassis, blood orange, deep red raspberry, fine leather, mint, so much earth and damp forest floor. The palate is ultra layered, ripe cassis, raspberry, brambly fruit of the forest berries, ultra tangy, charcoal, earthy, pencil, exciting, and blissful in it harmony and textural giving. This also has a mineral posture to go along with its impressive fruit and polished tannins - a true stunner. Yes, this still shows a youthful vigor, and I fully expect this to hit 3 digits in time, but it is immensely impressive as it is. Ranking: WOTN '00 Lafite, #2 '00 LLC, #3 '00 Cos.

2018 Château Lafite Rothschild France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
Very dark red/purple color with a 3mm clear edge. Double decanted, slow O for about 3 hours. Drank a glass over 2 plus hours. Deep black fruits, blackberry, chocolate, Creme de cassis, taut, oak, vanilla, quite vivacious, impressive, yet still shrouded in the shadow of its youth. The most impressive of the trio of '18 Lafite, LLC and Cos. Super potential. Score reserved.

Flight 5 - Bordeaux Flight 3 (2 notes)

Red
2000 Château Cos d'Estournel France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
94 points
Very dark red/purple color. Double decanted and then slow-O for 4 hours, recorked and then slow-O again for an hour before serving. Drank a glass over 2.5 hours. Cassis, ripe raspberry, purple flowers and lavender potpourri, pencil, cherry, and spledid spices. The palate has spretty purple fruits mixed with notes of tart red cherry, graphite, even more spice notes here, dense and concentrated, dried wood, firm yet approachable tannins and a long powerful finish. Clearly the youngest of the trio, and probably not at all unexpected. While clearly approachable now, I'd give this another 5 years before revisiting. Ranking: WOTN '00 Lafite, #2 '00 LLC, #3 '00 Cos.

Red
2018 Château Cos d'Estournel France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
Very dark red/purple saturated color. Double decanted, slow O for about 3 hours. Drank a glass over 2 plus hours. Juicy purple fruits, dense, firm, oak, black licorice, Indian spice box, a bit bitter presently on the mid and back end. There's a lot of fruit, but this, as you might expect from a young Cos, is wrapped up in structure and oak at this point. The most backwards of the trio of '18 Lafite, LLC, and Cos. Score reserved.

Flight 6 - Dessert Flight (1 note)

White - Sweet/Dessert
1985 Château Rieussec France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
90 points
Deep gold color. Drank a glass over 30 minutes. Spiced brown sugar, baked apple, baked apricot, honeycomb, thinner, orange liqueur, showing some heat on the finish. Still pleasant, easing into its twilight years.
