Introduction

A couple of days to hang out and discuss Tolstoy's War and Peace. Great people, great book, fantastic cooking and many fine wines indeed.

Flight 1 - Tasting the wines of Sabelli-Frisch (3 notes)

Nice chance to try this up and coming Cali producer.

Rosé
2021 Sabelli-Frisch Flame Tokay Lanterna Blodgett Vineyard USA, California, Central Valley, Lodi Mokelumne River

Rhubarb color, great sweet apple and peach nose and also freshness on the palate and flowing nicely and narrowly and cleanly all along the great finish.

I like this type of light touch skin macerated wines that doesn't exhibit any nasty side notes.

Recommended and even better with some air actually.

2020 Sabelli-Frisch Mission Marina Somers Vineyard USA, California, Central Valley, Lodi Mokelumne River

Light red color. Heavy and enticing nose of chocolate liqueur praline. great sweetness and soft palate but nice and fresh and lovely. A little alcoholic heat plug on the finish that detracts but still very yummy.
Red
2020 Sabelli-Frisch Zinfandel Faun Lauchland Vineyard USA, California, Central Valley, Lodi Jahant

Classic high-end Californian zinfandel with some rum raisins, figs, and real lovely expressive nose on a body that is surprisingly elegant and fresh (a trade mark for this new and exciting producer which I will get more wine from in the future for sure). Improved a lot day 2 (was drinking well already on day 1). Recommended.

Flight 2 - Risotto with wild mushrooms picked same day from the forest (2 notes)

The wines were just fantastic with a Risotto that had some freshly picked chanterelles and porcini and grilled chicken, grilled pointed cabbage head.

Drinking oh so nicely right now!

Sweet nose with cherry cola, vanilla, red and blue berries, and lots of pinosity all around. Fresh and medium bodied. Great with some pork pit roast so can take a lot of heavy food, the most Russian River like pinot fro Kelley that I've ever had which is completely fine since its so well made. Delish and drink now but could surely hold more years.
Red
2013 M. Marengo Barolo Bricco delle Viole Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

I love Bricco delle Viole and Nebbiolo more generally and patience is always virtue when it comes to these types of wines, including from more "modern" producers such as M. Marengo. Honestly, I think we popped this 10 years too early.

Its a great wine and drinking well, but it still has a lot of tannic grip on the back end, a nice softer mid palate, and lovely deep nose but really without any major complexities at this point.

Flight 3 - Pasta Bottarga from Tonno Rosso (1 note)

Spaghetti with bottarga, garlic, jalapenos, parsley and lots of olive oil. The tonno Rosso was deep and dark in taste, very different from the bottarga made from grey mullet. The wine was great and creamy enough to not draw out any metallic notes from the tonno Rosso bottarga, but honestly was even better on its own.

Even more creamy but still full of apple and freshness. So lovely with a pasta bottarga and a toast with some wild chanterelles. Perfect to drink right now.

Flight 4 - Dinner with Pork pit roast and a tarte tatine (3 notes)

Pork pit roast with grilled fresh corn on the cob, fresh potatoes, grilled avocado and carrots and onions. These wines were outstanding.

Red
2012 Rivers-Marie Cabernet Sauvignon Panek Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley, St. Helena

Delicious Napa Cab that manages to be both full of sweet cassis, some chocolate and some fresh laurel leaves but also fresh and fine (not too big body and everything in one place). Still not developed any tertiary notes but expressive and great food pairing.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2003 Dobogo Tokaji Aszú 6 Puttonyos Hungary, Tokaji

Wow! Time has added more complexity but also now we feel the acidity that is really pitch perfect and maybe was masked by all the sweetness some years ago. This has such a long journey ahead of it. But what a pleasure to drink now...

2010 Fuligni Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Outstanding right now - dark red with purple tinting. So much lovely sangiovese perfume on the nose with cherries, cherry pits, roasted herbs, some nice chocolate tones as well. Perfect balance on the palate. Great with a pork pit roast. Everyone's favourite.
