Introduction

No particular flights but a list of wines we tasted - all blind and had to guess!!

Flight 1 - Sparkling (2 notes)

White - Sparkling
2000 Twee Jonge Gezellen Krone Borealis South Africa, Western Cape
82 points
(Tasted Blind): The wine has a touch of pink and bronze brown colour. Unfortunately, the aroma is flat and oxidized, giving it a tired and finished character, finishing with strong marmite and twiglet notes. Not great.
White - Sparkling
1997 Domaine Huet Vouvray Pétillant Réserve Brut France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray Pétillant
88 points
(Tasted Blind): Mid-lemon colour with vibrant mousse. The nose is rich with ripe pear, citrus and Gala Apple. A delineated character on the palate, there is a pithy citric texture yet has a beer-y, savoury note that slightly detracts but does confirm Chenin Blanc yet could suggest some of the wine is tiring - an older MCC. The mid-palate is more cream soda, with sweeter fruits coming to the fore. Crisp but not biting acid, the mid-palate is all about bruised apple, creme brulée, and some button mushroom (troglodyte caves...). Pithy wine, but wine doesn't quite feel knit.

Flight 2 - Whites (5 notes)

White
2006 Constantia Uitsig Constantia South Africa, Coastal Region, Cape Peninsula, Constantia
90 points
(Tasted Blind): Light lemon colour with inviting notes of lemon sherbet, lemon tart, apple, smoke, dust and crushed rocks. There is an edge of capsicum reflecting the older Sauvignon Blanc Semillon styling.
A gorgeous mid-palate with minerals, crushed rocks and fig with a linear, streamlined, lemony flair. It is nicely balanced with some richness yet also edgy acidity. Long finish.
White
2014 Bruwer Vintners Muscat B de Alexandria South Africa, Coastal Region
88 points
(Tasted Blind): A joint venture wine by Gavin Bruwer and Bruwer Raats. 11.5% alcohol. 100% Muscat Alexandra - old 40-50 vines. Pronounced nose with an initial Viognier floral and grapy note that morphs quickly to litchi, Turkish delight and musk notes reflecting the Muscat de Alexandria grape.
A delicate style with mid-alcohol and fresh melon notes but with a cut of acid, noted terpenes and excellent intensity. Very approachable.
White
2013 Steenberg Sémillon South Africa, Coastal Region, Cape Peninsula, Constantia
93 points
(Tasted Blind): sourced from two vineyards, with the older one providing the texture, the wine is floral with an Elim style salted herb, orange peel, but with orange leaf notes. The mid-palate is juicy, fresh, and sumptuous yet with a thread of vibrant acidity running through. Mid-palate displays beeswax, orange, yellow stone fruit and well-adjudged oak integration. Good length
White
2014 Raats Chenin Blanc Eden High Density Single Vineyard South Africa
92 points
(Tasted Blind): Made from the Montpellier clone (SN24?) of Chenin Blanc grapes grown in Bruwer’s Eden Vineyard. Debut release. The entry is sharp, edgy nervousness similar to Chablis, with plenty of tightness and some underlying wood in the background. Excellent intensity with precision, there is a Chardonnay edge to this Chenin Blanc, although the acid does crescendo to the finish. Phenolic grip with green notes, perhaps on the edge of bitterness with that mineral granitic texture. This works well with a persistent length to the finish.
White
2013 Richard Kershaw Wines Chardonnay Clonal Selection Elgin South Africa, Cape South Coast, Elgin
(Tasted Blind): Well-defined mineral edge showing as crushed rocks contrasted with some richness on the mid-palate, lightly toasted oak and clean, pure styling. Remarkably long finish with complexity and depth. Conflict of interest, so no score.

Flight 3 - Reds (12 notes)

Red
1984 Chateau Libertas South Africa, Western Cape
89 points
(Tasted Blind): Blend of Cinsaut and Cabernet Sauvignon, the bouquet displays smoke and feral notes with squashy strawberries, wild mushrooms and earth. A soft and delicate palate that feels like Pinot Noir with that barnyard, feral element that moves towards Brett in a good way. The mid-palate has fresh strawberries, ash, and iced tea, contributing to its complexity. Finishes long with a cola tonic element.
Red
2010 Bell Hill Pinot Noir New Zealand, South Island, Canterbury
92 points
(Tasted Blind): An intense and penetrative nose with aromas of ripe, leather, stewed plums, mineral, bilberry and raspberry. Darker fruits on the palate, there is a lot of whole-bunch characteristics, some briny elements with fresh earth, sandalwood and a rising menthol. Well structured with fine, initially grippy tannins, elegant, upright and super silky towards as the wine opens in glass. Still youthful, this full-bodied Pinot has the muscular frame to keep longer. Wonderful depth to it
Red
2000 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
88 points
(Tasted Blind): Light ruby red with soft squashed strawberries and savoury notes on the nose. Pinot Noir characters. Some development in glass: The wine has a squishy, smooth, fine-grained texture. There is an acid spike on the mid-palate (almost as if added), which then opens and feels warmer from glycerol. It reminded me of a mid-1990’2 Hamilton Russell styling—some spices with stewed strawberry. As the wine opens more, there is a steel, almost metallic flavour that at times feels disjointed. Then further segues to garrigue and becomes more feral with meaty, savoury elements more towards Rhone than Burgundy. Already tiring with its development. To drink up.
Red
2009 Trinity Hill The Gimblett New Zealand, North Island, Hawke's Bay, Gimblett Gravels
91 points
(Tasted Blind): 37 CS, 38 Merlot, 15 CF, 8 Malbec with the rest of Petit Verdot. A lifted nose of sweet spice, intense black fruit and dark chocolate. The palate continues with a soft, airy entry, lively acidity, and chocolate, all finely woven together that culminate in a concentration and richness with elements of coffee/mocha, blackcurrant with a sweet purity, and a savoury umami finish. Somewhat elegant, with medium alcohol, it is modern with slightly baked tannins and a touch of damson bitterness on the close.
Red
2010 Viña von Siebenthal Syrah Carabantes Chile, Aconcagua Valley, Panquehue
90 points
(Tasted Blind): Mid-garnet in colour, with ripe plummy fruit, steeped cherry compote and roasted coffee grinds.
The sweet cherry on entry is complemented by a noted sweetness of fruit yet bright and intense pillow soft texture (Grenache?) and creamy oak. There is a blueberry and raspberry fruit core with gently tugging fine-grained chocolate tannins. Some warm glycerol that puts it more to Syrah is a well-balanced example and closes with subtle hints of coffee oak and roasted herbs—concentrated with lively acidity and fair length.
Red
2011 Cécilia oglasa Toscana IGT Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
95 points
(Tasted Blind): A deep ruby-coloured wine that, on the first sniff, has a slightly sulphurous note with blood and whole bunch notes joined by mint. The palate displays a black fruit core with clove, ground black pepper, some blackberry and even a hint of woodland flowers. Well structured and powerful, the wine feels more Barossa yet has a savoury edge to be European. Plenty of spice, peppery and eucalypt on the close. Outstanding wine!
Red
2007 Fattoria Poggio di Sotto Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
92 points
(Tasted Blind): Mid-garnet colour with noted spicy coffee oak and torrefaction that slowly opens to reveal stewed prune, black cherry and umami notes. Fairly intense and appealing on the nose and front palate. Melted chocolate, spice and ripe to overripe cherry/plum. Generous, rich in texture with lively acidity, this is a full-bodied wine. The close has some toasted brown bread notes, tobacco and tapenade. Fabulous length the wine improved immeasurably from its initial reticence. 91-93
Red
2007 MastroJanni Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Loreto Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
96 points
(Tasted Blind): The mid-garnet colour; the bouquet is umami, with warm sultry notes, elements of tinned cherries, and salted liquorice moving towards an iron bru (rusty nail) follow through on the palate. Excellent concentration, medium-bodied, with a lively acidity, there is freshness and smooth resolved tannins, and it feels slightly sinuous as it slowly spirals towards a fabulously long finish.
Red
2006 Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia Italy, Tuscany, Bolgheri, Bolgheri Sassicaia
flawed
(Tasted Blind): Flawed see above. Deep garnet and started with damp cardboard. Umami notes with herbal and dark fruits. Sadly, the cardboard increased and cork taint surfaced.
Red
2010 Filipa Pato Bairrada Nossa Calcario Tinto Portugal, Beiras, Bairrada
91 points
Tasted Blind): A deep garnet colour with black, olive and floral notes interspersed with tarry elements that then morph into those Portuguese characteristics like Christmas cake, date, and prune. The palate is more umami, with a trademark crisp acidity threading through the wine. Ripe fruited with savoury edges, this feels more Brunello-like with its tar and sappy feel against its higher acidity. Plenty of red fruits give succulence to the core, yet the wine has that stalky stem embellishment that gives sharper edges to the tannins, like dried apple skin, minerals and dry rocks. Given it is Baga, it will need time to unfold. 50-60% Stem inclusion.
Red
2000 Real Companhia Velha Touriga Nacional Douro Quinta das Carvalhas Portugal, Douro
86 points
(Tasted Blind): Medium to deep garnet in colour, the bouquet shows black olive, violet, silage grass and savoury notes. Brooding!
Soft, fruity entry edges with umami notes on entry, the wine exhibits strong marmite, diesel oil, old pastille chews, Syrah soothing herbs and basil elements.
Rather old-fashioned with brambly fruits and roasted herbs, it feels sweet with a drying, chewy oak and tannin - warmer climate? Past it best.
Red
2010 Justin Knock Pinot Noir Knock Back Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley
86 points
(Tasted Blind): Light brown to mahogany, the nose is savoury, meaty with some ripe red fruits - raspberry.
The entry has a green sweet note, which is different, stems inclusion? A smooth and sweet with plenty of ripe fruit-driven flavours, it lacks a bit of freshness and is on the more simple, riper side.

Flight 4 - Sweet and Fortified (1 note)

White - Fortified
N.V. Henriques & Henriques Madeira Terrantez 20 Years Old Portugal, Madeira
96 points
(Tasted Blind): Made entirely from the Terrantez grape variety and with 20% alcohol, the wine is dry on entry with fabulous acid, gorgeous concentration and utterly complex.
Fabulous length in the mouth, the wine shows candied orange, ginger, lime, lemon-edged marmalade, and cinnamon dust. Incredible wine!

Closing
