M&PD Tasting: Argentinian Grill

Mount Baker, Seattle, WA

Tasted October 19, 2023 by Eric with 122 views

Introduction

Brad did a simply epic job of breaking in his new grill: pears, mushrooms, salmon, chicken, beef and lamb. We had a perfect early Fall night on the deck to enjoy some stellar food, company and wines.

Flight 1 - Bubbles (2 notes)

What a knockout pair of bubbles.

White - Sparkling
2002 Dom Pérignon Champagne France, Champagne
Brilliant, absolutely wonderful energy, still vibrant. Citrus and some varnish notes.

White - Sparkling
1996 Dom Pérignon Champagne Oenothèque France, Champagne
Wowza, smoldering intensity, staggering complexity. I have had this wine a few times in the past 3 years, and this bottle was easily the most open and complex of the three.

Flight 2 - White Burg (3 notes)

Two amazing white burgs, just ethereal.

White
2015 Vincent Dancer Chevalier-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
Silky, mmm flint, tightly wound, savory, long, salty. Dancer is just awesome.
White
2015 Jean-Claude Ramonet Chevalier-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
Insane density. Spearmint. Much discussion that is was so much more Montrachet than Chevalier in personality. Insanely impressive, long and poignant.
White
1994 Domaine G. Roumier / Christophe Roumier Corton-Charlemagne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
flawed
Sigh, deep color. A bit sherried and over the hill, especially on the nose. That said, the palate did have surprisingly nice acidity, although it was a bit burned/bitter on the finish.

Flight 3 - Red Bordeaux (5 notes)

And waves of wonderful Bordeaux.

Red
1986 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
flawed
I am pretty certain this was lightly corked, as I kept getting moldy notes on the nose and a somewhat stripped palate. That said, this was tough to pinpoint due to the austere 1986 personality of this wine (which is a very atypically masculine Pichon Lalande). Regardless, it was very austere and very 1986. Powerful and dark with tobacco and mint.
Red
1982 Château Léoville Las Cases France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
Epic, a perfect example of this LLC. Graphite and mineral, dark and brooding. This has never been a really generous wine, but this bottle was really rounding into form.

Red
1989 Château Angélus France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Smoky, sultry and sexy. Just delicious.

Deep, smoky, modern. Excellent acidity.
Red
2000 Château Montrose France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
Mmm, deep, dusky and husky. This is going to be great in time.
