Flight 1 - Wines from the Cheval Blanc stables (6 notes)

White
2021 Le Petit Cheval Bordeaux Blanc France, Bordeaux
93 points
Not decanted. A blend of 80% Sauvignon Blanc and 20% Sémillon, young vines on sandy soils. Designed to reflect a Loire style rather than Pessac-Léognan, fragrant and floral, subtle Sauvignon Blanc aromas, lovely balance, elegance and freshness, aged in various sizes of oak (including Stockinger demi-muid), nice fat on the palate from the lees stirring, barely any visible oak, very gentle bitters, excellent length. I really like it, and I would suggest drinking it young.

2018 Château Quinault L'Enclos France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
92 points
Not decanted. A blend of 72% Merlot and equal parts Cabernet Franc and Cabernet-Sauvignon. Lovely fruit on the nose, crushed red berries, floral lift, there is sense of spicy warmth but without excess, pepper, gentle autumnal hints; quite firm tannins but rich and velvety in texture, good weight and freshness; the finish is still tight and feels clenched. Needs time, but I am not sure where this is going. Score assumes the finish turns out alright.

2016 Château Cheval Blanc France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
96 points
Not decanted. Marvellous nose, complete and aromatic and fresh, complex and harmonious, crushed red berries, whiff of top quality oak; balanced and elegant palate, fresh and energetic, concentration without weight, very finely judged tannins, exemplary purity of flavour; youthful finish will expand with time. Outstanding, great precision, not a hair out of place. Provisional score with upward potential.

2012 Château Cheval Blanc France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
93 points
Not decanted. Clearly recognisable terroir expression, the fruit development is less perfect than in the 2016, but it is straight and has good tension, fresh, well-judged tannins almost match the lighter weight, starting to show some evolution, no lack of weight on the palate, very good length. Charming in a direct way, do not keep too long.

2009 Château Cheval Blanc France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
95 points
Not decanted. A blend of 56% Merlot, 42% Cabernet Franc and 2% Cabernet-Sauvignon. Firmer extraction than both the 2012 and 2016 but not over the top, not really oaky but the tannins are a bit dusty on the nose, develops a cocoa note with aeration; the structure is very powerful, the palate is first and foremost textural, concentrated but with a charming freshness, wonderfully complete flavour profile, excellent length. A very complete wine with excellent potential, decant if you want to drink it now, to soften the tannins.

1985 Château Cheval Blanc France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
93 points
Tasted blind. Brought as a surprise gift by one of the participants. Opened on the evening before. Fully mature, tannins are mostly resolved, lovely freshness and energy, good fruit, orange peel, marvellous tertiary aromatic evolution, transparent and precise, has lost a lot of weight but not its harmony or precision, fills out with oxygen, good length. I guessed an older vintage.

Flight 2 - Bonus bottle (1 note)

Red
2017 Domaine Prieuré Roch Vosne-Romanée Le Clos Goillotte France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée
94 points
Not decanted. Needs a bit of time in the glass to find its feet. A baroque wine, wild and untamed but pure and precise, rosehip, roses, violets, firm but percaline tannins, candy cane, red cherries, whiff of volatility does not detract, immense energy, long and minerally finish. Extra point for individuality.
