Flight 1 - STARTER WHITES (3 notes)
White
2005 Domaine Weinbach Gewurztraminer Cuvée Théo
93 points
Rosewater, spice, lychee. Very dry, crisp and delicious. Cuts like a sword across the palate.
White
2006 Aubert Chardonnay Lauren Estate Vineyard
94 points
Rich, creamy, leesy and complex, with flavors of lemon, custard and yeast. VERY good acids keeps this nervy. Excellent.
White
2001 Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc
85 points
Still holding on to life, but not all that interesting. Still juicy, but the fruit seemed a bit candied and slightly manipulated.
Flight 2 - THE MERLOTS (23 notes)
Red
1992 Matanzas Creek Winery Merlot Sonoma Valley
93 points
Flavors and aromas of a mature Bordeaux. Holding up well. Cedar, earth, tobbaco. Elegant and lovely.
Red
2002 Pride Mountain Vineyards Merlot Vintner Select Mountain Top Vineyard
88 points
Not bad for a new world Merlot. Sweet, mulled plums, spice and sweet oak. Not overdone, but a bit tiring for me.
Red
2004 Switchback Ridge Merlot Peterson Family Vineyard
92 points
Mute nose. Dry tannins. A bit lean, but in a good way. Some loamy minerals add complexity to the plum and cassis fruit. Nice.
Red
Red
1997 Pahlmeyer Merlot
84 points
Musky. Seems to be showing its age. Cedary, but the alcohol is showing... like a hot Australian Grenache.
Red
1997 Castelgiocondo (Marchesi de' Frescobaldi) Lamaione Toscana IGT
84 points
Chocolate, oak. Underfruited/Overoaked.
Red
1987 Beringer Vineyards Merlot Bancroft Ranch
82 points
For its age, it held up well, but from a pure enjoyment view... it was a bit lactic, thin and lean.
Red
2001 Pride Mountain Vineyards Merlot Vintner Select Mountain Top Vineyard
85 points
Among a room full of Merlots, this did not look bad, but did not impress either. Average quality.

Red
2002 Pride Mountain Vineyards Merlot Vintner Select Mountain Top Vineyard
88 points
Fruity, with hints of bittersweet cocoa. Medium bodied, a bit short, but nice.
Red
2003 Pellegrini Family Vineyards Merlot Cloverdale Ranch
90 points
Not bad for a budget Merlot. Sweet nose, structured palate. Medium bodied, grippy, and nicely dry on the finish.
Red
2002 Arietta Merlot
91 points
Inky dark in color. Nice curranty nose. Dense, good structure. Moderate oak. Very young, needs time, but promising.
Red
1998 Château Beausejour (Duffau Lagarrosse)
87 points
Black fruits and minerals on the nose. Medium bodied. Good effort.
Red
2005 Bookster Merlot
91 points
Nice new world/old world cross. Good balance of fruit, oak, spice and loamy soil notes. Medium bodied, but complex and light on it's feet. Never tiring and easy to drink.
Red
2005 Shafer Merlot
88 points
Medium bodied. Peppery. A bit thin on the palate, but thankfully not overdone.
Red
2005 Duckhorn Vineyards Merlot Napa Valley
88 points
Stern, linear, but in a good way. Minerally in the finish. Somewhat French in style. Just wish it had a bit more in the middle.
Red
2000 Tenuta dell'Ornellaia Masseto Toscana IGT
87 points
Fat, rich and full of milk chocolate. Very new world in style. OK, for the style, but a bit one-dimensional.
Red
1997 Behrens & Hitchcock Merlot Napa Valley
77 points
Under-ripe. tart and shrill. Not much pleasure here.
Red
2006 Shafer Merlot
89 points
Aromatic. Pleasant. Surprisingly accessable for such a young wine. Good balance.
Red
2003 Blankiet Estate Merlot Paradise Hills Vineyard
85 points
Milky, loamy, a bit green. Some hints of spearamint. Not off-putting, but not my style.
Red
2002 Paul Hobbs Merlot Michael Black Vineyard
75 points
Too much VA for me to get through to the fruit.
Flight 3 - EXTRA WINES (2 notes)
White - Off-dry
1994 Zind-Humbrecht Gewurztraminer Heimbourg Vendange Tardive
92 points
Very nice, although the fresh liveliness of this wine is receeding as it ages. Wonderful wine, but I would tend to drink this sooner, rather than later.
Red
2001 Schrader Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Original Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard
93 points
Drinking a nice structured Cab, after a bunch of sweet Merlots, was like a breath of fresh air. This showed strong currant elements with good density, balance and grip. Needs time, but showing well.
