Mediocre. I heard good things about this producer and this is the second time I’ve tried them without finding anything. The nose is pleasant with light reduction, florals, some citrus and orange rind. But the fruit is a bit flat…. despite a nice line of acidity there’s no real dimension or fun.

1/10/24, 1:07 AM - Interesting - I haven't had this vintage (i was checking the reviews before buying) but tried the 2019 the other day and it was wonderful. sounds like the 2019 and 2020 are the ones to go for from this wine.

Plum liqueur, flowers, truffles, and crushed stone all make an appearance on the nose. On the medium-bodied palate, the wine is soft, fresh, lively, sweet, and round, finishing with lifted, ripe, juicy red plums, licorice, spice, and black cherry. 92-94

Please people get your Pinot's straight ... :)

It s an all right Pinot, with dark, berries and some structure, but still it lacks the zingy austerity, and chalky minerality that can make it really on the higher scale. Nose of cherry and mint, eucalypt.

It's one trendy estate right now... for sure, but still it is not super complex, nor incredibly deep... Good balance with loads of dark cherry.

Getting better on day 2

2/16/23, 4:41 AM - Hi Stanrocks, I'm not really sure what you're saying here, are you saying pinot shouldn't be in this style? I would argue it is quite complex for a maranges, and does have layers of flavour, yes it was obviously a hot/dry year but thats not to say they havent made the best wine they could from this vintage? I also like/prefer classicly styled wines, I'm just saying you cant suggest everyone on here doesnt know what good PN is, because they probably do.

2/17/23, 2:45 AM - Interesting, so you're mostly talking about the calibration of the scale - I see your point but I think i'm of the mindset that scoring in the 80s is 'ok' whereas wines I really start to enjoy drinking on an intellectual level are in the 90s. That said I also rarely give wines above 95 points - I'm saving those scores for once in a lifetime wines.. ultimately I guess its all just completely subjective anyway - right!!

Out of sheer near spite towards a less than wow experience with the 2016 Petit Mouton, I decided to commit infanticide and crack one of these open to see how far away the 2016 Petite Mouton was from the grand vin.

I’m happy. While this took a few hours to open up, it was fun to dedicate a day to follow this around. The first few hours it didn’t do much but that texture is killer. Very smooth and slick, rich mouthfeel. After about maybe 5 hours or so, it finally started to showcase a dark smoldering hodgepodge of pine, olives, strawberries, cassis, and mocha.

The best part came (prodigiously) at dinner time. I didn’t want to make an extravagant meal so I decided to make some simple steaks a la Fiorentina with butter and herbs. By that point, this wine was firing. It had lovely scents of cherries, plums, pine, oregano, and an ironclad backbone of tannins that became unrelenting towards the end showing that this wine needs some serious aging. I’m not sure it’s gonna match say the 2016 La Mission or 2016 Leoville Las Cases (I do like Pessac/St. Julien a lot), but it will be a very, very good wine. I think it’s worth it’s salt.

Little brother doesn’t even come close to this. Note to self, pass on the Petit Mouton and buy a few extra Moutons instead. My kids will be happy with this one.

Dark chocolate, spice-box, smoke, licorice, espresso and plums carry the nose. The wine is full-bodied, deep, rich, lush and plush on the palate with layers of ripe, supple, silky dark red fruits with intensity, purity, and salty tannins. The wine is hitting all the right notes. And even better, as good as it is now, with some age, this is going to be even better. This is in competition for the highest scoring, well-priced wine in all of Bordeaux. This is a reminder, grab this wine by the case. Eventually, prices will rise. Remember, you heard it here first. Drink from 2023-2045.

Château Lafite Rothschild vertical tasting (Wine Watch, Fort Lauderdale, Florida): Deep, dark ruby color. A really nice balance of fruit and earthiness. It showed no tiring, and it's definitely at its peak. Not as ripe as the 1990, but had a really nice earthy edge to it. Lots of tobacco. Gained weight throughout the night. A really nice wine in a good spot.

2020 Athens Wine Event (Tartare, Athens): Tasted blind. The nose putting on a instant show and producing a huge smile on our faces ( Nicol actually detected something TCA at start but that was but a faint and did not spoil the wine thankfully).
A mastercalss of classic Bordeaux and so fresh and energetic still ( We tried Mouton 85 also a superb wine , Papies 98 , back in February and that was a lot more evolved) to the point that we went with an early 90s maybe a 90-91 Dominus. A lot of healthy fruit, lots of tension here, very little in terms of secondary feel but with enough to create a super complex nice and an amazing palate. It was a great idea to serve this blind albeit for wines like this we never do as indeed it shown through and through. An amazing 96-98 and with another 20years to go

Wonderful juice. A joy to drink and complete crowd pleaser every time.
  • Vinterest Angus commented:

2/8/21, 2:51 AM - The wine has great freshness, busting with red and some dark juice flavours, a lifting mid palate and great depth to carry it through to a remarkably long (for a Morgon) finish.

MAYBE. Am I missing something but every time i have had this champagne, it always seems a bit thin, a sharp acidity that is not well balanced by fruit. I just don't get the attraction. we opened an nv bollinger and it seemed so much more flavoursome. is it an aging issue or is it just a naked emperor?
  • Vinterest Angus commented:

9/2/13, 4:36 AM - I AGREE. Overrated and overpriced. Quite enjoy the 02 and 03 but this wine really isn't anything special. Would go for a number of other wines over this, even some Proseccos

Agree with JulianSkeels. Fourth bottle of four. Just a great great Pauillac. So well balanced. Drunk alongside '98 and '99 and just blew them away. Wish I had more.
