Tasting Notes for WineLackey

I drank this over two nights, and it was enjoyable, but surprisingly the oak was a bit intrusive (on both nights). I've had quite a few Goodfellow Pinots (love them) and haven't ever encountered this before, not even on newer Heritage bottlings. No other notes mention it either, so I'm going to assume it was just an anomaly. I have one more bottle, and will hold for a few more years.

Moderately oxidized. Hopefully it’s just this bottle, as I have one left.

An otherwise lovely Syrah with an unfortunate touch of bandaid brett. I picked up the brett right away on the nose, and when tasting, it had a bitter, medicinal note (think Cloraseptic). I've only had a few Big Basin wines (Syrah and Pinot) but don't remember encountering this with those. I have three more bottles of this, so we'll see how those go. I got them for a very good price, so perhaps this is why.

My first Walter Scott Pinot. Oak is a bit obtrusive at this point, so hard to get a read on it Will hold my other two bottles and hope the oak integrates with more time.

As with a previous bottle, this was tainted with band-aid brett.

My last bottle, opened after the previous bottle was corked. This one was lovely, and still youthful. Very enjoyable now, but if I had another one I would wait another five years or so, not because it needs it but just out of curiosity to see how it develops.

Had brett above my tolerance threshold. Band-aid aroma, and the bitter medicinal taste overshadowed the fruit. First time I've had this problem with any of the Château des Jacques wines.

This had a touch of brett unfortunately, as otherwise I think I would have liked it quite a bit.

Disappointingly this was tainted with brett. Bandaid aroma, bitter medicinal aftertaste.

Previous two bottles of this were oxidized. This one had just a touch of oxidation, but was still pleasant. Drink up.

Sadly, this was oxidized. I then opened a second bottle, which was also oxidized. This is the third bottle out of an original lot of 15 that has had this problem, which I'm assuming was due to the cork not sealing properly. Too bad, as this has otherwise been one of my favorite Loire reds.

Cork crumbled, so we strained the wine into a decanter. Dark purple color that belies the age of the wine. Old cab qualities of earth and cedar. Plenty of (slightly tart cherry) fruit left. Down to one of these now, wishing I had more.

Cork was in good shape (unlike a couple of other 1987 bottles we opened where the cork crumbled). Dark purple, no visible bricking. Not terribly complex, but nice sour cherry fruit, with an earthy quality to it. Don't think it will go downhill anytime soon, but also don't think it will evolve much more either.

I tried the 2008 vintage of this wine, but unfortunately it was tainted with bandaid brett. Since the wine seemed as though I would have enjoyed it otherwise I decided to give the 2009 a try. Same thing - bandaid brett. Apparently this producer considers brett to be acceptable (or perhaps "terroir"), but it ruins a wine for me.

A previous bottle of this was very tasty and seemed like a very good value. Unfortunately this one was bretty, and went down the drain.

Pop and pour. Dark purple. Dark fruit and just a hint of oak on the nose. Palate had ripe dark fruit and silky tannins. The tannins got slightly more aggressive after the bottle had been open a while. I would put this Syrah somewhere in between the old world and the new world (or the stereotypes thereof). Ripe, but not overly so, with the structure to age. Quite enjoyable, but still tight, so my remaining bottles will rest for a while. Very glad I have a few more to follow its evolution. 91+.

I got a bad first impression of this wine due to the synthetic stopper (wines under this type of closure simply don't last in my experience). Unfortunately it didn't get any better from there, as upon pouring a glass I was greeted with a strong whiff of brett. No further note.
